The best opening week for a Star Trek movie ever, and it pulled in more in one weekend than most of the other movies did in their entire run. Matter of fact, it made more in one weekend than most of the other movies combined.

I don't think this is spoilery, but if you haven't seen it, you may want to skip this-
I got chills at the scene where the Enterprise rises out of the debris cloud around Saturn. I honestly can't remember the last time a movie really, REALLY gave me chills.
Sallah
AMEN to that! That gave me chills too. And the VERY end where you see the Enterprise and the classic series "chimes" start and spock start narrarating, whew....Loved it. I am going to see if for a third time in like an hour.

Well I've just got in from watching it for a second time and I have to admit, it was better 2nd time around. Knowing the story meant I could sit back and relax and take in everything I may have missed first time while concentrating on the story.
I will say though that I took one of my mates along this time. He's a casual Star Trek fan so has seen most of TOS, TNG, DS9 and the movies, but I did find myself explaining quite a bit on the way home such as things that were in the Countdown comic etc. He really enjoyed it though. He originally thought the plot was a little thin until I explained the points. He changed his mind after that.
Take care,

3 years or so ago i remember reading posts about Star Trek being dead and buried, what a change 3 years can make.

I hope you gave Jeremy's endearing bald patch a rub for me; gave James a kiss, and picked the Hamster up for me as a freebeee!
No Stig though? Maybe he was the guy driving Spock's bonkers new ship!!
I caught a preview here in Bath. I thought it was actually rather good. I gave it 8/10.
That is in terms of it being an action flick and an entertaining film. There was one great "Kirk moment" and the new Bones is a triumph!
However, if you're looking for deep meanings and something philosophical to ponder upon ~ you'll be sorely disappointed because it is relatively shallow. I'd rank it around the middle of all the Star Trek movies.
I am also disappointed ~ but not surprised ~ that the only female character of note had very little to do. We get to hear that Uhura is fluent in "all 3 dialects" of Romulan, and yet we never see her put that knowledge to good use, which is odd since the villain is Romulan and it takes place before BOT as per the old timeline.

I was disappointed too. I think Saldana wasn't the right choice for Uhura either. I feel she was there for T&A factor more than anything else. i could probably count on one hand the meaningful lines Uhura had in this film ... in my opinion.

Jules, we are kindred spirits in that thought.

As for the issue of giving the viewer something deep to think about, there was stuff about destiny, and overcoming diffrences in there, but I think they intentionally designed this movie to be an emotional event, with thrills and chills and character moments, in order to get everyone familiar with this new/old universe again, and end the film on a feel good note. The deep thinking stuff I'm sure they saved for the sequel.

If you're looking for deep meanings and something philosophical to ponder upon, go and watch the TNG DVDs over and over. This new movie is what Star Trek was meant to be!

And I think that's fine. It seems to be what sells... besides I personally think the philosophy of Star Trek translates better to TV, when I think about some of the best Star Trek Episodes quite a number have nary a starship, phaser or much tech of any-kind involved for much of the show...
For example, City on the Edge of forever, Darmok, The inner Light, Past Tense and others.
There are, of course, many great episodes with plenty of of tech, but these days I don't think the theater going audience would show up for that style of show.
Just look at what was done to "The day the Earth stood still", a good sci-fi movie with a pretty good message, but they just wern't able to remake it in a way that was any better, or really translated to resonate with movie goers today. (ignoring that it was just poorly directed for a moment!)

Put me down as a third. In the glitz factor it was #1 but for substance, cohesiveness and merit it rated right above Star Trek V.

Exactly my point about "The dumbing down of Star Trek" and entertainment in general needing to be as thought provoking as Pokemon.
