As long as it's not 7 of the exact same guitar, I think your all right FHC!

Also... I'll add that collecting "Past Due" bills, is not a healthy form of collecting :P

Allot goes into the design, creation and manufacturing of many of these things. I appreciate that, and enjoy opening and playing with them to experience the delightful innovation many of these "collectibles" represent. In a way, to me, its a celebration of human inventiveness!

Some stuff I buy because I like the media tie-in, be it TV, a movie or comic book. Other stuff I buy because I have an appreciation for history and historical aspects. For example, I have quite a range of historical figures from Lewis and Clark, all the way through WWII, like FDR, Churchill, Patton, and even most Nazi Leaders. To me these are more of a learning/historical nature and something I'm keenly interested in.

I'm not compulsive, and I never allow a hobby to interfere of in anyway impact my finances. I also don't get wound up over not being able to get something. I collect things to enhance my life, and I don't think people should just focus on consumerism collecting... for example, one of my many hobbies is I enjoy hiking and camping, and to that end, I plan trips to National Parks. There are currently 59 designated in the US (only counting parks), over the years, I've managed to get to 38 of them. I may never get to see them all, but I enjoy collecting the free visitor maps that the park service gives you.

I also have a habit of tossing ticket stubs in shoe box. I love my ticket stub collection, as I can reach in pull one out, look at it and remember... "oh yeah... that was the day I went to the stones concert in Oakland with Vik... I wonder what Vik's up to these days?!".

These things are like photos to me, which I also take and collect.

Bringing it home to this point, Collecting a bridge crew of DS9, is a warm reminder of a series that I enjoyed and found meaning in, hopefully I learned something from it and it made me a better person.

Okay...I am REALLY Urked at this whole situation. I had a friend that went to SDCC, she got there at 9:00 AM this morning and the BoP was already sold out...I guess they sold out on Preview Night....Now that is just B******t. A "Preview Night" should be to show off toys, not sell the exclusives to all the Scalpers that are the ONLY ones that can even get into preview night. My friend has the 4 day passes every year. BAD BAD Decision on that DST by selling those that night. The Hallmark Kelvin was also sold out as well.

BUT... THIS PERSON HAS 8!!! ONE person has 8 BoP on this Ebay auction...Seriously? Plus there are other auction from different people that have like 4 or 5 of them as well...I am seriously Livid about this situation and the bad practice by DST on this one.

http://www.ebay.com/...=item1c34d8c915

ouch! all sold out on preview night?! yeah that seems wrong!

I hate to say it but since he sold 1 he might have his price right. At least some thinks thats an ok price.

#70691 Pacific Rim is out...

Posted by Gothneo on 13 July 2013 - 04:06 PM

Went to see Pacific Rim today.

and oh my it was a bit of a wreck for me!

Def not Del Toro's best effort IMO.

W/O giving spoilers,

1st the Good.

The battle scenes were everything I expected, though a bit silly at times, but fun, action packed entertainment. I thought it started out on the right foot, but once they tried to really build relationships it started falling apart.

Now the Bad.

The dialog. Terrible! Laughable! I blame the primary writer, Beacham for that. But the interaction between characters were just painful for me... that's Del Toro's fault as the director.

Its almost like it tried to be a bit campy, like Starship Troopers, but it just didn't pull it off. In fact, I liked starship troopers more.

This had a 65 score on Metacritic, where Man Of Steel only rated a 55, and I def thought Man of Steel was the better movie. Sorry, but the critics got it wrong this time IMO!

#70600 'Terminator' New Trilogy to Begin in 2015

Posted by Gothneo on 06 July 2013 - 06:45 AM

I don't put Lethal Weapon in the same league as Terminator.

Lethal Weapon is just a quirky action/comedy in the same vein of 24 hours, and has technically been remade many times in the guise of such movies as Bad Boys and Rush Hour, so remaking it with the same name doesn't mean much to me, they are all fun in their own way.

Robocop is at least in the same genre as Terminator, and while Terminator 2 is the movie that typically makes most sci-fi lists, there wouldn't be a "2" if "1" hadn't been so well received.

Robocop, I think needs to be redone, if only because the FX are so dated. The challenge is to to update the clever way that the original poked fun at American consumerism,  our decline from being a world class manufacture, etc. Some of the best bits of Robocop were the clever fake TV Ads. To do the same thing wouldn't cut it, but at the same time there is an expectation, and thats the challenge, people have expectation set from the original, but they still want to be surprised when they see the remake, and to have their expectations exceeded and I think its possible to do with movies like Robocop.

But neither robocop nor terminator 1 consistently make the top 5  list of best sci-fi movies like Bladerunner, and they are re-making that too... which is another thread ;-)

I think you have an interesting list 1701, and I agree, I think Orci and Kurtzman will be back, though I personally would like Manny Coto to take a stab at the next Trek movie.

Seth McFarlane has expressed an interest, but his writing style is a bit more satirical and he hasn't done much that suggests he'd be a good match.

Bird, seems similar to McFarlane in the sense that his credits are mostly animation. some good stuff to be sure, but I don't know how directing animation translates to live action?

Duncan Jones, might be a really interesting choice! I really liked Moon, and it had a message, but its pretty much all he's done.

Nolan, would be another interesting choice. The Prestige and Dark Knight are two fantastic efforts, and while I though Inception was a bit overly elaborate, it worked and was well done. In fact, I had high hopes for Man of Steel, because I thought he was directing or wrote it, but he was only the exe producer.

Whedon I actually think would do a fantastic job with Star Trek. Firefly/Serenity are cult classics. And I like that he can give a fresh modern take on one of the bards classics, like much ado about nothing. His writing cred may be stronger than his directing cred as cabin in the woods is really a fresh take on horror movies. In fact I normally don't watch those types of movies, but the high critical praise made me curious, and it really was something different then I had expected. Someone that can take some Shakespeare, wrap it in blanket of Gene Roddenberry and knows how to deliver exciting action like Avengers seems like a formula for success.

You know, the production quality of the opening scene was really quite stunning. It kinda made me wish they spent more time actually walking about and exploring Nibiru

VF, I totally understand what your saying. I remember seeing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and feeling like Spielberg had raped Indiana Jones,so I can understand. The thing is, the average movie goer doesn't really remember who Khan was. That was some of the other commentary I heard from people. A few said hey... I think he was in a previous movie or episode or something... he had these things that they stuck in your ear.... they don't recall, so its all good.

The other thing I noticed was the crowd was much older than I expected. I suppose all the younger 20 and 30 somethings already saw it weeks ago, but it really was allot of 50 and over people in the crowd. The types, I'm thinking that used to watch TNG on TV... so I didn't see that the movie was building a new fan base. Of course this is only one data point and could be isolated, but I'm just saying what I observed.

I'm now going to come at this from more of a Star Trek Fan perspective.

I've been re-watching older Movies, just to make comparisons, and, In My opinion, TWOK is still a superior movie. The dialog and plot is very witty and make sense.

I just got done watching the The Voyage Home, which I always felt was a bit campy, but in re-watching it, I was reminded that the antagonist are really ourselves. That movie pits what we are against what we could be in a true Roddenberry egalitarian way. I actually find the plot works better in that movie too, though the production level and action scenes just aren't as fast paced as JJ's movie.

Re-watch Space Seed and TWOK, since cannon is still supposed to apply (khan is pre alt universe split), the mannerism and character of Khan is still supposed be enforce. He is supposed to be "the best of eugenic war tyrants". JJ took the character out of role. And all for nothing really. If JJ, Orci and crew wanted to use a familiar character to Trek fans, I would suggest that making the antagonist General Philip Green would have fit Cumberbach and the idea that JJ had perfectly. There's enough vagueness  in cannon to let you say Green somehow got lost in a cryo-tube too.

I can't say that other Trek Movies haven't gone off the mark, because they have. If you read the history of how hard Roddenberry fought Meyer on the script for undiscovered country you'll understand. Essentially, the undiscovered country was a statement on the cold war and the ending of of it. If I take elements of TWOK and elements of undiscovered country and squeeze them together, I end up with Into Darkness, thus my final analysis is that into darkness is pretty derivative and nothing really new, but its visually stunning, miss-casted and miss-directed, yet well acted with lots of action and explosions to keep people entertained.

Also, I've decided a huge part of the problem is Orci. He has to go. The reason is because he's a conspiracy nut and this shows up in his screen plays.  Put him on something like Fringe or Mission Impossible where you expect conspiracies and it works, put him on Star Trek or Transformers and I say it doesn't work so well.

I think what we need is William Shatner's Kirk reflection to come out of the Nexus with Picard and The 1701 E, do a time travel thing, prevent Romulus from being destroyed and set up Priceline.com discounted tours to Romulus and Vulcan.

Lol! You could have "The Shat" wake up from a dream in a cold cold sweat and yell "Spoooooooock!!!"

#69285 The 1st review of "Into Darkness" is in!

1701, I'm not sure if everything your writing is responding just to me or not. If I assume it is since you presence my quote, then once again you are making a strawman argument by juxtaposing conditions on my critiques and out right drawing conclusions that I'm not putting forth.

If you just speaking in general to criticisms others have had and lumping it all together, well, ok then.

I would suggest that good science fiction writers read and know what may or may not be probable, thus the reason trek talked about ion propulsion before it was actually realized, isnt a happy coincidence... but the engineers that made it possible heard about it before they made it a reality, and they heard about it from start trek. I've never said there aren't issues with the science in any trek. Quite the opposite. I believe i said they don't always get it right, sometimes it's really wrong!

Look, we're just not going to agree on this, and that's fine. I have my view and you have yours, but your the one who keep staying trek means something different to different people right? Why is it such an issue to you if I want my trek to be cerebral and action fun at the same time, or I want it more science than fantasy?
