It fit fine, it was a slip of the tongue. It happens to people.

I didn't see the episode as I already said I was done watching this show. Can't say I'm surprised that they are using this language in what used to be considered a family friendly show. I had a coworker come in a couple nights ago and tell me how disappointed he was in this show. He had watched every episode up to last Sunday nights episode with his young daughter and after Sundays episode, he says he is done with the show now. He said the hopefulness, the bright future no longer exists in Star Trek, and it's not fit for his child to watch either. Not all children go to public schools and hear profanity all day long. Some parents try to filter what their children watch and Star Trek no longer makes the cut.

So his young daughter seeing horribly mutilated bodies from an accident was alright, but someone getting over excited about a scientific discovery and accidentally sweraring was too far?

Alright then.

The mutilated bodies probably played in to his decision too. Gratuitous Gore is usually associated with dark, dystopic shows and he said he didn't like the lack of hopefullness and darkness of the show.

Star Trek has done gore before, its nothing new for the franchise.

The guy getting killed in Conspiracy is worse than what they showed on the Glenn.

The person falling through the floor and getting stuck and dying bothers me more than what I saw on the Glenn.

There isnt anything dystopic about Discovery.

You have your opinion , many others have theirs about whether or not Discovery seems dystopic.I don't agree with you and since you are only able to render your own opinion and you don't speak for everyone, i will say in my opinion it is very dystopic..

I agree. This last episode was pretty much about redemption. It's still a bright future for the federation.

Youre not watching this show anymore, youre done with Star Trek: Discovery so why are you still here talking about a show you no longer watch and didnt like? You cant pass judgement on this show giving any kind of opinion other than the one youve already given in that you dont like it after only watching... 3/4 episodes?

If you want to carry on watching and critique the show constructively then great but clearly this Star Trek is something you can no longer support - thats fine but youve made your point, shouldnt you now just move along?

I was communicating that someone I work with made his own independent decision to not watch this show any more as well based on many factors but the f bomb was the last straw for him. So there are other people dissatisfied with this show besides me, a great deal from what I see on social media. I choose not to watch any more of this disappointing show but if I have more pertinent data to add in this thread, I plan to do it .

If they had used fuck in a way that was insulting towards someone, or negative, or something like that I could understand the complaints more.

But this was in a scene where someone got super excited about a acientific discovery, and slipped up and and said it. How is that not an appropriate context for it to be used in Star Trek? She clearly demonstrated that she knows she shouldnt have said it, like I said it was a slip up.

People swear, getting all upset about it is ridiculous. Your kids your trying to shelter are going to hear it and worse in the real world, whether it be at school or elsewhere.

This was an excellent Trek episode, but everyone seems way to damn focused on a swear word being used.

For me, it isn't so much the swear word, I've heard it a million times but it's the fact that the producers need to stoop to the level of dumbing down Star Trek for a generation that can't carry on a conversation without words like this. It's the same generation that needs more action because they get "bored" by tedious intelligent conversation about important subjects. And they can't relate to honest, hard working , moral people. They want flawed, obscene, belligerent people because they are more Interesting.

Im sure your work colleague has a tongue in his head to be able to sign up to this forum to talk himself about his opinion on Discovery - lord knows we need new members in this place.

I just think youre bitching (yes I swore because Star Trek inspired me to do so) for the sake of bitching because youre bitter.

Bitter about how Star Trek isnt the way you remember it and isnt the way you want your Star Trek to be. Well, sorry but it is what it is now and honestly, while I dont agree with everything theyre doing in Discovery, at least theyre still taking risks with a 51 year old franchise when they could of played it very safe indeed with a show that resembles tos or tng. its good that they feel their able to play with Star Trek more and take more risks with the way they tell a Star Trek story.

All in all Discovery seems to be working with its audience. I think a lot more fans are enjoying it than not and while sure Id have much preferred a show based beyond Voyager and Nemesis. This is actually pretty good television. Star Trek will go on and thats a great thing.

Its all fake news... a plot by the Russians to destroy the western utopia! They got all their bots worked up trying to destroy Discovery.

I bet VF is just some Russian bot... pretty poor programing if you ask me... sooooo obvious  :P

1701D, I agree Discovery is finding its footings!

I would sum up episode 5 with this quote...

When it mattered most, it wasn't the commanding officer who steered the ship along the path of righteousness, but the crewmembers themselves, acting of their own volition. It was a triumph for the spirit of Star Trek: finding a way to do the smart thing in a way that makes you proud of who you are.

People that are focusing on it dropping the F word aren't paying attention and are allowing themselves to be distracted... just as Alteran195 and you mention... so my quip above is actually a bit tongue in cheek.

They said it twice... Youre seriously over exaggerating this.

Virtually every Star Trek has had people swearing. Even Picard said Merde which is shit in French a couple times.

These people are moral and hard working. But like humans they have flaws, and to you that over rides everything else apparently.

There isnt even that much action in this series. The most action packed thing this episode was the prison escape at the end.

One before that was the jump to save the mining colony.

Episode 3 had the stuff on the Glenn.

The Battle at the Binaries was episodes 1 and 2, easily the most action packed episodes.

Just another thing youre over exaggerating.

It feels to me like youre barely even paying attention to the show, and just look for things to hate about it.

It's been shown in studies that people who swear often are more likely to be trustworthy.

In the situation of someone who uses colorful language (in a non-insulting, non-socially-insensitive [think N word, B word, the other F word] way) and another person who is offended by it, it's the person who is offended by it who is the problem, clinging to some kind of nonexistent high horse based on their own prejudice and attempted social stratification.

So I guess then it's no surprise to guess by all of those little collapsed ignored comments on this page which person is pretending to be the most upset about it.

By calling a "potty mouth" a "flaw" you've already ceded too much ground.  It ain't a flaw at all, in fact, cases in the opposite have already been made.

Wow, out of everything I've read on this forum, this is perhaps the most insane post I've ever seen. I can see based on this post that it would be wasting my time trying to talk sense into someone that would believe something like this.

Sorry, not going to waste my time googling something like that. If our society is really devolving to that degree, God help us. No wonder people that think like that like Discovery.
