Boy... the residuals from syndication of Trek has been a stalwart for CBS for decades! I would think they would need to be in decline to offset the loss of putting it all behind the paywall?

This is CBS All Access. We're only talking about the United States and Canada. They can continue syndicating their shows to the rest of the world.

Hey, if they're comfortable competing with themselves by letting Netflix pay for TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT, that's fine. Maybe it makes better fiscal sense.

Oh... I'm not saying your wrong! its just been a cash cow from all the independent operators for decades out there... but like you say... it does bolster the All Access brand to have that behind the paywall... why pay if its on every other channel for free? But they have allot of "classic" shows that have the same issue... Twilight zone for one....

What they need to do is get more classic properties up and behind that paywall.

I dont think theyd pull it from broadcast television, but could see them pulling it from all other streaming services and only having it on All Access.

Why pull it from another service? If its making you money licencing it out to other broadcast stations and making you money by having it on All Access then youd keep it on both until such a time it becomes financially less profitable on broadcast stations.

That time will come, eventually the only place youll be able to watch Star Trek is on All Access.

The question is though; where does streaming go from that point. I think eventually even movie studios will become streaming only studios. Less and less people are going to the cinema, more and more people are buying smart TVs. Whilst I dont think the cinema experience is dead (look at how great theatre is doing), I think for films that arent spectacles that deserve the big screen in a luxurious cinema, theres no real reason as to why studios like Paramount couldnt at first team up with Amazon Prime or Netflix and co-produce something like Star Trek or something else for direct to streaming.

Then further down the road; who survives... does All Access survive or does Netflix? Is Netflix bought by CBS? Do the two become one and CBS drops the All Access name in favour of Netflix? Does Paramount and CBS become one studio again?

The media landscape is in a state of flux and I think itll be a long process of agustment and settling down. As for Star Trek, I think eventually when it makes financial sense, Viacom will bring Paramount and CBS back together with streaming both TV and movies done through their own service, potentially on a global scale eventually.

The likes of Netflix and Hulu... they may end up only producing their own content or they may continue to be production houses working with the likes of Paramount or CBS as they do now with both CBS and Disney/Marvel on Star Trek and the various Marvel shows out.

Ultimately broadcast TV is a dying format, it wont be long before broadcast TV is no more and rather than paying for Tv the way you do now, itll be a choice of packages that will include a multiple of streaming choices.

Netflix acquired Millarworld in anticipation of Marvel going to Disney's service. I wonder where the Fox shows will end up. Will they still air on Hulu or will Marvel insist that Disney's service get first dibs on Legion and The Gifted?

It's only a matter of time before Star Trek is pulled from other services and streamed exclusively on All Access.

They can try it if they wish, but they might find that they don't get the interest they thought they had after all if they take their shows and try to build a whole streaming service around them. Netflix's popularity comes from having so much variety of programming to choose from. I doubt I would even subscribe to an all marvel or all Star Trek service even though I like them both.

well... I can't see how everything will exclusively always be behind some paywall... there are all ready streaming services that are free and sell advertising just like over the air.... and they need content. Take some of HBO's exclusive productions like Deadwood or Rome... eventually they put them out on DVD/Blu-Ray for a hefty price... and after they maxed that revenue stream, now they are on services like Amazon... and they are still available on DVD/Blu-Ray, but for substantially less.. so it seems HBO is trying to squeeze any cent out of them it can... while it can,... which is usually when they are newer and theres lots of buzz.

I think there is a value in the service to simply be able to watch shows when you want.

I only have a couple more days on my CBS subscription before my cancellation for the hiatus takes effects.  But I have discovered a new convenience it offers now that I have gotten a Google Home Mini in my bedroom (along with the Chromecast I have had for awhile).  Once properly set up I can speak aloud, "Hey Google, play Star Trek Discovery" and it appears on my TV screen.  I don't even have to tell it which subscription account has the content, it figures that out -- or which Chromecast in the house to send it to, it assumes the last one and sometimes asks back to confirm.  I can also tell it a host of other things to control it once it starts playing.  And CBS All Access is one of only 4 subscription services that are supported right now (the others being Netflix, HBO, and Viki).

For years I have avoided cable TV, and subscription services.  One reason is that I am a big collector of physical media and it seems redundant to pay for access when I have a library big enough to keep myself entertained already (and still growing).  Another reason is that I'm a DIY person and I hate paying for things I can do myself, so I already had my own home theater PC setup with Windows Media Center auto-recording all my favorite free Over-The-Air broadcasts of new programming.  So old programming, I buy the home video media of anyway, and new programming on major networks I could just catch with that rig.  New content on cable networks was another story, generally I just waited a year for the blu-ray to come out for things I knew I wanted to see and then watched them when I bought it.

But I am slowly coming around to the subscription services.  $10 a month here and there adds up pretty quick if you have more than one, which we do -- I also just started trying out SlingTV, a slightly more expensive service that gives you access to stream live cable broadcasts and select on-demand content.  But these services offer a lot of convenience and work pretty smoothly these days, especially when they integrate with my growing home automation environment.  I can stop worrying about maintaining that aging home theater PC and keeping the disk free.  I have slowed down on buying TV shows that are available via these services for my physical library, which saves my wallet some grief in return.  And, I can watch any of this stuff on my phone (and/or Chromecast/Fire stick) no matter where I am.

So, there are a lot of benefits to the new world.  Coincidentally, the 2 CBS broadcasters near my home have also always been the most iffy channels on my HD antenna, so often times whether or not I could watch CBS depended on the moisture in the air and so forth -- which was annoying as my favorite late night show is Colbert.  Even if Discovery had been on the regular network, I wouldn't have been guaranteed to be able to see it all.  So this coincidence made it very easy for me to say "fine, I'll subscribe to CBS for awhile so I can see what this show is about".  Now that I can tell Google to play Colbert on demand, I am starting to rethink whether I should let CBS All Access cancel itself after all.

Well... I'm hoping to leverage streaming services in a slightly new way... I have to be in Japan for a couple weeks on Business... I'm gonna try seeing if I can just tap in and watch me some 'merican TV using an HDMI cable and my iPhone... if it works I'll be a hppy camper because basically the only thing the hotel has in English is a couple of international news channels.

So can we call this series a failure now? I mean I don't like Discovery, but even I was surprised it's this disliked. In Star Trek's very own poll the series that's widely been considered the least favorite amongst fans (Enterprise) still did three times better than Discovery.

How is that poll even remotely indicative of fans opinion on the show?

I love Discovery, but they certainly wouldn't be my first choice of who I'd want to serve with.

Shows or movies with likable characters are usually the most successful and have committed fans that hold these characters close to their hearts for many years to come.Unlikable characters like the Discovery characters are short lived because people don't care about them because they ARE unlikable.People collect things that make them feel good. People may watch Discovery but not many will ever feel about it the way they have about past Star Trek shows because of the tone and substance of Discovery.

Well I wasn't 100% serious with my comment, but I do think this is interesting. I was a little surprised to see Discovery at 2%, I was also surprised to see TOS below Voyager. With Discovery being the big new return to Trek I would have expected a little more excitement revolving around it in this poll. Even just new fans who came to the franchise without knowledge of the other incarnations should have been higher than 2%. I haven't really followed the series other than the discussion here and it seems to have dropped off the radar amongst mainstream popularity. I guess this kind of confirms that to me.

Well the poll is about which crew you'd want to serve with.

It actually looks to me like people may have put some thought into their answers, because I kind of agree with everything about the ordering when considering it through that lens.

I can understand why people would rather serve under Picard's crew, or Janeway's, than Kirk's.  For one thing, any woman serving under Kirk would be posting #metoo on Twitter after their orientation training.  But just in general, Picard's people are highly capable, and Janeway's crew was a close family.  Meanwhile most of Archer's crew seemed incompetent and green and the Discovery crew is led by a shady captain with possibly nefarious intent, who wants to be working under all those drama bombs?  I figure DS9 lands where it did because of the wartime environment?

 Because of that poll? Are you serious?

Enterprise did "three times better"? You're comparing 98 episodes of one syndicated series to less than ten from one behind a pay wall. We all know one of the common gripes about Discovery is that "we have to pay for it." Trekkies used to have disposable income but obviously something went terribly wrong along the way...

And to Alteran195's point, DS9 is my favorite series but TNG is a living room in space. I'd much rather hang with that crew on that ship than a space station stuck between a planet of religious zealots and their holy wormhole.

Well like I said I wasn't 100% serious. I would've thought though there would be enough new fans out there who think "Discovery is AWESOME!" and would just blindly vote for it in any poll, to at least drag this show above 5% - 10%.

I guess in a way this also highlights one of the issues Discovery has. Even amongst it's fans it has unlikeable characters apparently. While it's good to have complex stories and all you have to have characters people can relate to and want to see again and again.

Lorca's been growing on me. There are certainly a good number of other captains that have been questionable... Ransom, Pressman, Decker to name a few. It remains to be seen if Lorca is truly despicable or not.

But yes, its kinda tough to pit 8 episodes against any of the other series IMO.

I think most have been calling Discovery a unanimous success.

That being said... I still wouldnt want to be posted to Discovery. It doesnt seem like the kind of ship Id want to be on like I would any one of the Enterprise ships.

Personally if I had to choose Id be onboard with Picard and pals.

Star Trek: Discovery needs to become that type of optimistic, exploration of the unknown in its own unique way and Im enjoying the road to that ideal version of Star Trek.

Oh Lorca is brilliant, Stamets, Tilly, Saru, Culber... but it hasnt got that hero ship, USS enterprise quality about it and thats perfect for the moment but as a series... the show should be progressively moving us towards the optimistic everyday exploration of the unknown.
