Episode 6 premiered today. I enjoyed it and wished this series was on every week, Great to the phaser rifle back in use.

This was the first Continues episode I've ever watched, decided to give it a go after hearing so much about it. It was pretty good, certainly feels like TOS.

Bit of an odd one.

Gigi Edgly was very good, but she spent a good deal of her screen time crying without context. There was some measure of explanation in her closing monologue, but it was all a bit trite and unearned.

Her character seems to be one of these people we're supposed to assume everybody knows, likes, and trusts, but we got basically no introduction to her apart from her being tired.

The monster was passable, but it became sympathetic, again, without earning it. In general, it felt like a lot of the connective tissue of the story ended up on the cutting room floor.

 

There was a strong "Sisters are doing it for themselves" vibe to the middle of the episode. If there had been some reason for these mostly female officers to band together, it wouldn't have stuck out so much. That said, McKenna decking McCoy with one punch of extreme expediency was delightful. I had to laugh that they took over Engineering - I mean, talk about choosing a place that would incite the maximum possible response from an already unreasonably enraged crew! What about the hangar bay? Or a cargo bay? Or literally any other room in the rear of the ship?!

And why didn't McKenna tell the rest of the crew about the Alpha-wave-whatever-yokes? Ok, so there's probably a finite supply, but at the very least give a couple to the Captain and Mr Spock - that way they'd stand a chance of controlling the situation before all hell breaks loose!

 

I liked the idea of the telepathic waves amplifying negative emotions. There's plenty of precedent for that kind of thing in canon (Sarek and Lwaxanna have had similar effects on people at times). I liked it more for the fun it allowed us to have than the actual notion of it.

 

I'd have liked some more explanation of Usdi's abilities - relativistic travel, emotional manipulation (Was he shielding Eliza from his father's attacks? Or was the effect on her to make her sadder for some reason? Immunity-by-Daddy-issue? Bizarre!), near-indestructability.

 

Overall, I give it a score of 'Meh+'.

Destructor, I totally agree. There are a few other nitpicks I have with this episode, but as usual I have no idea how to insert the SPOILER thingy, so I'll just say that I love Star Trek Continues, but ep. 6 was the weakest, especially coming after "Divided we stand", which ranks up there with the best Trek episodes ever, if you ask me.

Alteran, you should watch the other episodes. I enjoyed them a lot, especially "Lolani" and "Divided We Stand".
