I have been working on this on and off (more off than on) since August. The final upgrade will include a repaint with Duplicolor Med. Marblehead Met. (the closest I've heard to the original PK 7173) and black emitter, a green LED bargraph, beeper when the bargraph is increased or decreased, removed and filled belt clip, and refit the buttons so that they can be pressed repeatedly (versus having to switch with the original design)

I started working on a brand new phaser in August, cut the hole for the bargraph a little too big, but I could live with it, got most of the electronics wired and the beeper wouldnt work, so I set it aside so I could hardwire it later. Well about a 3 months passed and I decided that I was going to work on it more, but the electronics were pretty much DESTROYED, most the solder points had been ripped off and some other damage, so I gave up for another month.

After this I decided to start out fresh, so I used my old phaser, I cut all the holes for the graph and the switch. Since the stickers were starting to come off, I took them off and there were some bad color differences in the molding, so I decided I should paint it. About another month later, I finally began to sand and prime it. I was priming it with some Testors model primer, then when I went to paint it, I found out that you have to use Automotive primer (hey, its my first time ) so I spent SEVERAL days sanding it down smooth again, and applying the auto primer. I let it dry and applied a couple coats of Med. Marblehead Metallic, still some rough spots so I sanded down those spots and repainted. I am pretty pleased with the outcome of the top piece and battery cover, although there are a couple of rough spots towards the bottom of the main body by the grips from trying to remove the painters tape.

This is the point that I'm at now, its been almost 3 weeks, and hopefully I'm going to get the bondo hardener for the bondo tomorrow, so I can finish the painting by next weekend or so. I am also going to have to revive the electronics (which should be loads of fun!), figure out what works and doesnt, then combine the 3 sets (my 1st phaser, my 2nd phaser, and the upgrade kit). I am still going to have to hardwire the beeper as well, since its a problem with the circuit board.

I do have a question though, for the emiter, I am trying to make it black, but then when the phaser is fired it will glow read, what are your suggestions for this? I am thinking leaving the normal red under the black paint, then apply 1 or 2 LIGHT coats of the black paint. I am using a Red 10mm (i believe) for it, instead of the normal bulb. Do you think this will work?

I will try and get some pics soon!

Cool project.

I know Testors makes a transparent black spray paint. That might help with the emitter. Although I suggest you experiment with the paint first to make sure.

Keep us updated.

Now, here are some pics!!

Original Phaser

Original Phaser with the PLI removed (top only)

Phaser bottom taped off and beltclip removed

Top of the Phaser painted!

Side view of the phaser repainted (you can see a couple of drips and such)

I have bondo'd the beltclip hole and a couple of other things on the bottom and have applied the first coat of primer to it. So I should be able to finish all the painting by this weekend and move onto the electronics!

I am almost completed with the bottom portion of the phaser, I just did some more bondo to fill a couple of other molding issues I found and added a little to the beltclip hole, so I may be done earlier than expected!

I know the standard phaser sound that comes with that toy, but what the heck was the other one? It sounded like a drill that was losing it's power.

The alternate sounds for the boomerang and cricket phasers were pretty wierd too. Definitely not screen accurate, nor identifiable.

With the mods I made to the phaser, the Power Level lights no longer change the sound, but change the LEDs on the bargraph, to change the sounds you use the old light switch in the battery cover, and to turn it on there is a switch on the bottom (Pics coming soon!! I have to finish an Essay Outline for english first smile.gif )
