The Orville

What I do find funny is all the folks upset about the "SJW agenda" of Star Trek jumping ship to Fox to watch an episode about a same-sex couple struggling with a cyber-porn addiction. [/quote]
Yeah... not sure that this fits the bill for anyone saying Star Trek isnt real anymore .
Regardless, if they keep putting up shows like this it will be canceled 1/2 season

I've seen several articles stating that it's already internally (unofficially) been renewed for a third season.

That rumored renewal seems to have more to do with a tax credit than ratings:

Yeah, except for the starships, shuttlecraft, inclusive cast, racially diverse characters, futuristic setting, holodeck, communicators, interplanetary government, color-coded uniforms, musical score, cinematography, writers, directors, social commentary, and overall format of the show, it's nothing like Star Trek. I can see why so many Star Trek "fans" insist on flocking to it.

Many TNG episodes are a snooze fest too... and the exceptional episodes Id argue are a bit more spartan than a good fan should admit.
I guess Im wondering do you only accept TNG because it was the last thing Roddenberry had a direct hand in?

So, I think we all understand you can't call it Star Trek due to IP rights. But formuamtically... The Orville could be a non-dystopian "Mirror Universe". The Orville isn't TNG in much the same way VOY isn't TNG.
But getting back to the actual topic, There were a few episodes last season that were not just enjoyable but showed some promise... based on what we've seen this season I'm still waiting for something better than mediocore.

As of the second episode this season, ratings are reportedly already at a series low:

Probably would have performed better in its original spot.

I have an appreciation for DS9 and Voyager as well as TNG and TOS. Enterprise was when they went off the deep end with changing Canon. They should never have made prequels and just kept going forward and kept with the heart and soul of real Star Trek.
Interestingly I found Enterprise to be a little bit of a return to the core of what Star Trek was originally. DS9 was a station stuck in one spot and Voyager was a lost ship trying to go home these were both very anti-exploration at their core. They both had some great sci-fi-fi stories and fit very well in the canon though. I agree Enterprise had to deal with the canon issue of being a prequel, but to me all of the pieces fit together well enough considering, much unlike Discovery or the Abrams movies which fit together about as well as Duplo in a Lego world. I do agree I've been wanting something that moves Star Trek forward since the end of TNG. To me Orville has done the best job of filling that void for the type of content that TNG and TOS were, but it's not Star Trek at all so it's just not the same. Still a fun show to watch.

While I think it might have started out as some sort of mix of a parody and homage to Star Trek, the end result is something very different. It definitely borrows a lot from the world of Star Trek, but I don't think it would fit in that word at all. To me it's kind of like Rick & Morty which started out based on BTTF, while that was their inspiration they are certainly something very different. Also another great sci-fi show that's buried in humor, what's the deal with all the good sci-fi lately shifting to the comedy category?
I wouldn't call the first two episodes mediocre, while surprising as season openers I think they wouldve been viewed as fairly solid mid season episodes with good character development (especially for Bortus) and good stories. Still the best sci-fi on TV right now.
As of the second episode this season, ratings are reportedly already at a series low:
I saw those numbers shortly after it aired and yes they are concerning, that second episode performed almost as low as Discovery. The one positive in the article though is this:
"However, The Orville did well with delayed viewing, which isn't indicated by its live viewership numbers."
Obviously that won't help since executives probably won't consider that, but perhaps it means the numbers aren't a true indicator of how it's performing and we may seem them bounce back up. Regardless it still amazes me a show like this is on network television at all let alone renewed for a second season and possibly third season. I feel like this show shouldn't exist, but yet here it is, so I'll just enjoy it while it lasts.

That's how I felt about Hannibal. I couldn't believe it was on NBC!
Since networks make more revenue from advertisers during live viewings, that's their focus. Subscription services like Hulu or Netflix are more interested in total views. The show may end up on a streaming service. Maybe CBS All Access will pick it up.

Episode 3 was very good, what a huge step up from the first two episodes. Wish the season had premiered with this one, I think it would have worked much better.
Gotta love the casting of two different Trek doctors.

Yeah.. I enjoyed it... but I just rewatched the S2E1 of Disco back to back with the Orville... and honestly... as a show... the Orville felt dated... if that makes any sense.

The Orville is nothing new, it feels like the 90s. Which is exactly what theyre going for.
None of their storylines have been terribly exciting, most of them have been fairly predictable. Mainly because a lot of them are rehashing older Star Trek stories.
Its defiitley nailing the job of appealing to TNG fans though, and now poking fun at Discovery.
