In Topic: Mego Corporation Revival - Could this mean new Star Trek toys?

From what I've gathered talking to Target employees I do not believe manufacturers get charged back for clearance. They've told me that each store has a set budget for how much they're allowed to clearance to move whatever they need to. I've seen stores clearance brand new items and things that sell pretty well, that certainly wouldn't be fair to manufacturers. With Mego some stores are clearancing it and others are not. I've also noticed it seems to have been selling pretty well, this was kind of surprising to me, I didn't really expect the Mego stuff to be that popular.

I think what I would like to see and what could work from playmates isn't exactly a "retro line" but more a modern day extension to the 4 inch line that kind of has a little retro style to it. Kind of like what Hasbro did with the Star Wars 3 3/4 line when they brought that back. The figures were way more detailed but seemed like a natural evolution of the old figures. Some of the old Playmates figures are really well done so it's feasible that new figures could work alongside the old ones. They could of course throw in some re-releases on retro cards much like hasbro did. I do agree the 2009 line was handled very poorly the figures were pretty terrible and while the movie didn't flop it didn't really generate the fan involvement needed to support a figure line, if anything it divided the fandom. Sure the movie did well, but that's mostly due to the general public who wouldn't consider themselves Star Trek fans who went to see a fun movie and couldn't have cared less about buying any merchandise. Playmates invested heavily in that line and I suspect they got burned pretty bad. I'm sure there's some fear of going back into Star Trek with them, although it's been 10 years and these new shows are developing a lot of content so it might be the right time, maybe this time just take a slow and easy approach.

Yeah at this point I think Playmates is the only company that could make a Star Trek toy line work. DST already did the 7 inch collector line so anyone attempting that (like Mcfarlane) is just duplicating those efforts. I think it's been long enough that the 4 inch line has built up a big nostalgia factor and if they could couple that with also doing some new stuff in the same scale I think a lot of collectors would get on board.

Clearance is different at all Targets. Each store has a budget and decides what they want to clearance. I did see some Mego's clearanced at half off at one of my local stores.

I wonder if maybe they're thinking of moving it around like they do with the Star Wars Celebration. I would be okay with that, especially if they plan a year in Orlando so I could go!
