It will mainly be the building block aspect that will sale the Kreo concept. If DST would have embraced the building block idea, I could definitely see direct competition. In the Lego type range of product I like Mega Blocks' figures best,then Lego, then Kreo. If Minimates were still offered with building sets they would rank second right after Mega Blocks figures. Erector is doing building sets for the video game Gears of War and those look to be like Mega Blocks' Halo and World of Warcraft figures. I guess for me, I prefer for the figures to be more realistic instead of cartoony.

I honestly think we're getting our markets mixed up...

Mega Bloks, LEGO, Hasbro/Kreo are all mainstream, mass produced kids toys that have transcended into the niche market because lets face it, why should kids get all the cool stuff!

DST/Art Asylum and their Mini-Mates brand are speciality brands marketed to adults and collectors NOT kids even though kids through their parents or teens going into specialist toy shops or comic book stores may find them cool and start collecting them.

Unless DST are bought up by Playmates Toys or another mainstream toy company who decide to push Mini-Mates into the arena of building blocks, there's no way DST have the resources to compete on any level with the likes of Kreo or Lego.

With the Kreo range, this is competing with the likes of Lego and Mega Bloks and I agree with you that since this is the first extensive Star Trek building block range, it could do well and carry on beyond the new movies.

Maybe. Or maybe the way the way Minimates or distributed in my area is different than the UK. I find them at comic shops and Toys R Us mostly. When DST first had the line and were doing characters of Batman and Superman they also had simple building sets similar to Lego. If the scale isn't to different on the Kreo ships and Minimates maybe they will look good displayed together.

I'm just saying that Hasbro is mostly known for decently articulated figures in 3 3/4" and I find it funny that if the focus is changing to lines like Kreo that the figures were kept so average and simple. Hasbro has always lead the way with its action figures which is why I thinks we will get a line of figures more in line with Star Wars, GI Joe and Marvel too.

Well, two things.

1) Here, Minimates are sold at TRU. There are tons of them on the pegs most of the time. Most of them are in a special section that is more full of adult collector stuff, but when the last Trek movie was out, at some point the stores I go to had lumped ALL Trek stuff side-by-side in the normal "kid" sections along with the Playmates stuff. Also I think if you asked DST, the marketing spin would probably be that minimates are as much for kids as adults. They just lack the in-roads to put them on the UBER-retailer shelves like Wal-Mart, but TRU is still pretty major here.

2) Lets be honest. Adults make up a huge component to Trek toy sales, whether they are marketed for adults or not. So all I really meant was, as an adult, if I want a mini-figure, and DST is providing some, I'm not going to feel the need to buy Kreons (unless there is something just AWESOME that DST doesn't cover). If minimates were still out of the picture, I may have picked some up just for giggles but now I'd rather spend on the minimates. That's going to take away from Kre-O sales in some degree, whether it hurts or not depends how many "kids" (or their parents) are picking up the slack. That's going to depend on cost and how well they market Star Trek to kids this time around (they pretty much failed miserably last time). And my initial comment was only focusing on the mini-figures, not the rest of the building block market. There are people who only collect mini-figures -- in fact they buy up LEGO sets, take out the figures, and sell the rest of the playset on eBay as "figureless" (or sell the figures by themselves to such collectors at relatively large markups that cover the cost of the whole set).

I think the likelyhood of a substantial and long term action figure line all depends on the type of success Star Trek Into Darkness has and the knock on effect that has on the Star Trek brand as a whole with kids. Accept it Hasbro won't do a line just to sell to adults, they don't do that with Wars and won't do it with any other brand they have. My guess is that we won't ever see a toy line like Star Wars again and that whilst I'm certain the Trek movie will do amazingly well at the BO, I think if there is to be a figure line it may look more like Mattel's The Dark Knight Rises line or the Iron Man 3 line and last for as long as each of those lines, meaning 2 years at most and possibly just gimmicky one off toys rather than a long standing line like Star Wars delving into every character and ship etc...

The big line for Star Trek will be the Kreo range. It's new, never been done with Trek besides a one off Mega Bloks set years ago and I think it's actually a very promising sign that Hasbro are taking things slow with Star Trek and suggesting that they won't drop the license after 2013.

I think you raise a VERY interesting point regarding what we think Hasbro is mostly known for and actually goes back to what we were talking about earlier in that how the toy industry has changed. I'd say had Jj Abrams reinvented Trek 10 years ago it would have definitely been another action figure and toy line from Hasbro, but the truth is its getting more expensive to produce toys now and movie lines whether it be The Dark Knight or Trek, don't last long. You just have to look at the toy lines coming out from Hasbro with movies this year. Hasbro i believe are putting toys out for: GI Joe, Iron Man, Thor and Star Trek? with exception to GI Joe, all are getting toy lines that are not exactly extensive but side more on the gimmicky or role play side. I know Lego have the marvel licence but it seems to me that Trek could be getting a more substantial offering than most movie lines with the addition of Kreo if we are to get a similar gimmick line Iron Man 3 seems to have been given. that possibly means Kirk on pull back quad bike, Spock with some kind of action, maybe a kind of phaser, communicator, Klingon head mask perhaps taking inspiration from the other Hasbro masks, could even get a Bat'leth! But I think the traditional toys we get if any will be very much focused on kids play rather than the multi age appealing toys we see with Star Wars.

I think if you want a toy line or you want the chance for that kind of Star Wars line to become a reality for Trek, Paramount and CBS need to invest heavily in pushing the Star Trek brand to the kids... Meaning perhaps an Animated series like Clone Wars and movies that like Star Wars appeal to the younger demographic rather than what appears to be the older, teenage and young adult demographic Star Trek Into Darkness is aimed at.

Dunno, doesn't always work that way. Some may be ultra rare and not guaranteed in every box. The fact that they are "blind" definitely suggests there is going to be some rarity component to it. If they are truly in foil bags, "feeling them up" shouldn't be that difficult!

Yeah true, I just don't like going into TRU and feeling toys up lol since I usually go on my own.

My two kids and my girlfriend and her kids will all like the Star Trek mini figs so that could be a good thing, I guess. I for one would have loved a Star Trek Lego video game.......so Kreos have that strike against them. If Hasbro doesn't do figures that's two strikes. If Hasbro nor DST do figures and ships from the JJ Abrams universe that will be three strikes. Of course, the latter two things may still happen and that could be a win!

I'd be all for a Star Trek cartoon similar to The Clone Wars but I know there is a big vocal group from the Star Trek fan base dead set against any kind of change! In all honesty Clone Wars isn't doing much to get Hasbro's Star Wars toys moving right now at the moment. If you look at Hasbro distribution over 2011-2012 you could make parallels to DST's distribution. Lol.....An awful lot of Star Wars product is rotting on the pegs right now and most of Hasbro's 2012 Star Wars line never even made it to retail. So it just goes to show, even the almighty juggernaut Star Wars isn't infallible.

Just to bring a point that was raised in another topic by a member here... We're almost three months from Star Trek Into Darkness and whilst GI Joe Kreo sets have begun hitting retail, there's no sign of Star Trek... I'm pretty sure these will be showcased at Toy Fair along with possibly other toys and role play items but when to people thing they'll start hitting world wide retail? Toys R Us UK have suggested that SOME of the Kreo including the Enterprise will be hitting before the end of Feb... Possibly the 19th?

All I can say is, the more I see of JJ's Enterprise, the more I wish DST would take a crack at it. A line of 4" Hasbro figures would be icing on the cake but I'm not going to hold my breath. Oh and by the way, did anybody here get a glimpse of Hasbro's new 6" Black Series for Star Wars? Some franchises just get all the luck! And some ....Oh well.

Yeah I have a feeling if you look at the offerings to Iron Man 3 from Hasbro then your probably close to what we're gonna see for Into Darkness plus the KRE-O line.

Toy Fair coverage begins on the 9th and with Hasbro, will be interesting what they put out...

I'm guessing it'll be mostly Kre-o items, may get to see the other sets besides the Enterprise. Might also be some action figures with play features and role play I'm sure will feature so you may get your wish of having a phaser and communicator made by someone besides Playmates, although Hasbro ALWAYS put the play functions of their toys before screen accuracy so whilst it may do more than Playmates attempts, role play may look weird and child-like.

I'm hoping for a robust line of toys really, nothing too OTT but a nice selection of fun, and enjoyable toys for kids.
