I had heard they just took the AMT/ERTL model and tweaked it.
They're very similar but not completely the same. The DST version is slightly smaller and less accurate when compared to any of the 1701-D studio models, probably because of the electronics. Some proportions are off: the upper saucer of the DST version is a bit more cone-shaped, the back of the stardrive section's neck doesn't have the right slope, and the impulse engines and shuttlebays 2/3 are smaller and improperly shaped. The engineering hull is much fatter and stubbier on the DST version, and its midline and the nacelle pylons are much thicker, similar to the four-foot studio model as Thomas E. Johnson mentions (the ERTL kit was based off the six-foot model). The nacelles themselves are missing their wedge-shaped bases. Doesn't take away from the fact that this is probably the best Trek ship toy any company has put out, but it isn't a 100% accurate replica either.
