#86962 "New ‘Star Trek’ Series Coming to CBS in 2017"

I've been keeping a watching brief on this and it sounds like there are many reasons to be optimistic about this new show.

I feel the producers are targeting a broader audience and using exactly the right platform to reach it. Scheduled TV is dying on its feet and streaming is so convenient. I'm definitely up for this (and for the Top Gear boys' new show in the Autumn! :) ).

I'm encouraged by the shorter season and that the delivery platform allows the writers a greater freedom of expression. I hope they use it wisely.

I can't believe that it's been a decade since Ent was cancelled. I was one of those who thought it wasn't before time. I am cautiously optimistic for a return and believe the on-demand format could be a good move ( we used to hire videos of TNG from the local video stor before it was eventually screened on British TV).

The bar for TV shows has been raised and Trek may struggle to compete unless the writers take risks. I don't love the concept of "edgy" in the way it is overused nowadays, but a new Trek has to be relevant to the world as it is now and pluralistic.

#82649 Paramount Lays off workers, Star Trek into Darkness is one of the reasons

Ha! Sofa surfing on a wet afternoon and feeling nostalgic for the days when I used to type novel length treatises on Star Trek! I am confused: was "guest 1701" a girl or a guy? The rhetoric seems familiar... However, now it's two years later, where's the follow-up to STID?  It's taken while to capitilise on that success... And not that I ever thought I'd say it, I am much more excited about the new Star Wars movie.

#82594 Femme Fatales - Deanna Troi

Interesting debate! As much as I am a feminist, Deanna Troi was either in a skin tight catsuit or that dreadful minidress, so DST don't have a great deal of scope when it comes to Deanna's wardrobe - unless you want to go very off-piste and have her wearing the Romulan costume she wore in "Face of the Enemy"! That "Bun and Skant" look was always horrible, but that's not the best likeness I've see either - she looks like a right miserable mare in that pose!

Nice to see somebody else is also concerned in female agency in Trek though! :)
