Its been a long time since i posted about Battlestar Galactica, but the 35th anniversary Bluray disc of the original movie has been released recently, and i picked it up at Best buy. Apparently this is a Best buy exclusive for the time being at least. I have to say the remastering of original BSG in HD is a movie i am glad to see get a decent looking transfer at last. I wasnt impressed with the DVD transfer that came out years ago, but this bluray looks really good in my opinion. It reminded me of why i always preferred the original over Ronald D Moores version. The original shows the 12 colonies of man on 12 worlds, with a fleet of Battlestars that protect them from the agression of the cylons, who are a merciless race bent on the destruction of humans. In the original version of BSG, which debuted back in 1978, Cylons were not an invention of humans that eventually became sentiant and rebelled against their masters, Cylons were a mysterious race of beings that had battled the Humans for a 1000 years and were intent of domination and destruction of the human race. The series didnt last long enough to delve into the backstory of Cylons. Colonial Warriors were honorable and the human race was the same as we were, just more advanced. I enjoyed this series very much and i never missed an episode. In 1978/1979, it cost about 1 million dollars an episode to produce, which was extremely expensive in those days and apparently the ratings were not high enough to justify that kind of money on a series. Apparently ABC did get a lot of complaints after the show was cacelled after the first season. A revamped show called Galactica 1980 was made, with considerable changes to the show and an effort to make a cheaper show by shooting a lot more planet side shots rather than so many space fx shots. Galactica 1980 actually was supposed to be a fast forward through time to the Galactica's arrival on Earth. It only lasted about half a season, then was cancelled.
The reason for this topic is the release of the long awaited remastered original BSG movie and why i think it was a lot more wholesome and enjoyable to me. I like shows where you can tell who the good guy is and who the bad guy is.
The newer BSG was a well done show, very interesting and an excellent scifi show. I just wish it could have been named something else and based on other characters in another universe though, because it completely perverted what Original BSG fans loved about their show.
