I bought a ST V Phaser from a friend. When I bought it he told me that it was a junk casting, and boy howdy, he wasn't lying!!! It was close to free and so I said send it on, it might be fun to fool with.

After scraping on it for an hour or so trying to get all those seems and cleaning a lump off the nozzle the size of a grape, I decided what I was going to do with it, (idea came from Phez's mid grade build at http://www.trekpropzone.com/forum) I would go for a rough, well worn, used in combat, and dropped to many times too count look!! SIR, those aren't casting flaws, those are dents in the metal SIR!!

Here we are in some primer

After 3 coats of primer I gave it a real slick sanding. I hate to go to thick with primer as you can lose detail, but in this case that might be a good thing!! LOL I then painted it with 3 costs of a metal looking paint, slicked it up a bit to make sure the top coat grabbed on, and then hit it with 2 coats of flat black. I painted it this way so I could sand through the black easy and I wanted the metal looking paint thick enough so that I didn't break through it. After the wet sanding with 400 grit, I used a matte clear coat on it. I used a matte clear as I figured that gloss just wouldn't look right. Hard to be shinny when you were just got kicked in a ditch. tongue.gif

I think I got that battle used look I was going for and I think that it's cannon enough to use with my WOK uniform. All in all it was cheap fun with stuff setting on the shelf.

I played around trying to get a photo that showed how cool (at least to me) it turned out; I'm not sure that I got it through. I can't seem to get the fine details to come through.

Enough of all that, here it it finished love it or hate it,

Nice FHC! Some of the details do look a little over-painted (mind you, I am no customizer so that might be what they supposed to look like), but overall I really like the BD look! Great job!

The casting was so rough I decided to go for a look just as rough. It makes you stop looking at the horrible casting job. LOL I have no idea who casted this but it may be the worst casting I have ever seen.

Here maybe this helps

It's so old that Kirk used it in ST V and the last (6?) photos were taken by Daniels!! roflmao.gif

I like the look of it, the 'used in combat' look was definitely the way to go!

Wow! Talk about making lemonade when life gives you lemons. It looks really, really good. If I had received a casting like that, I probaby would have cussed at it for a good ten minutes and then threw it in a box where it would have sat for all of enternity. But you took it and made something nice out of it. Some burn marks on the emitter would have been a nice touch as well.

Now you need to have Shadow Dale make you a ST5 combat uniform with burns and tears all over it to go with your phaser. Ooh, better yet, make a TWOK field jacket that way. It could be your battle outfit.

that looks great, the worn appearance looks really good, and a clever way of hiding the flaws of the cast.

Excellent work!! smile.gif

Looks great. Looks as used as the TSFS-TVH Phaser they used a couple of times on TNG.

Yeah, it reminded me of the ST3 phaser the guy had in "Final Mission".

I think FHC did a really nice job, especially considering what he had to work with.

However, a worn, beaten-down phaser in the hands of a Starfleet officer just doesn't work for me. That's more Star Wars, not Federation. In the hands of a miner or pirate 30 years after ST6, yeah this'd make perfect sense. Worn with a TWOK uniform, it'd just feel wrong. Unless, like someone said above, the uniform was also weathered to give the look of a guy who has been in combat for weeks.

Great job, FHC. I wish I had your patience, skill and ingenuity.

Dan

I'm thinking that was a piece that Riker had on his wall. He would say, "Can you believe this is the weapon that Kirk carried into the fight to save the ambassadors being held hostage. After that, one of the natives held onto it for 20 years before he realized what he had and put it on Ebay.tongue.gif
