Started painting last night, havent settled on a hull color so I just did the nacelle grills and bussard collectors.

Im happy with how the bussards turned out, I decided to paint the inner domes orange and used a sharpie to make the raised fan blades or whatever black. A bit sloppy, but through the red outer dome its not noticeable and I like how subtle it is.

Im going to paint the impulse engines today.

I love the ship design but I still have trouble wrapping my head around the size difference between this and the original.

Indeed. Before I got the kit I'd seen some of the side profile pictures showing the size difference, and it didn't look crazy, but having the kit and seeing the two next to each other, the difference is a lot more than I thought.

Here it is compared to my 1/1000 Titanic for a real world sense of size, the same scale as the new kit. The Discovery Enterprise is huge.

Most of the painting is done, just need to paint the saucer and finish painting the clear parts white. May have ran out of paint, so need to do a supply run.

The Titanic put it into an interesting perspective. That ship had a 3,300-person capacity. Of that 900 were crew. And this Enterprise has under 500? How much of the 1701 is lab space?

They really packed people in on Titanic. Even first class cabins with the exception of the most expensive rooms were fairly small, and corridors were a lot more narrow than the movie would have you believe.

But ya, the crew on the Discovery Enterprise are living a lot more comfortably than on the TOS ship with how big the saucer is.

I always appreciated Roddenberry's vision of the Enterprise being an aircraft carrier in space. That's a relatable scale. Now I'm wondering how many shuttles and runabouts and workbees this new version has room for. Seems like the Defiant could even squeeze in there.

Success! Well done.

I'm still mustering up the energy to get back into building. I may try something a bit off-screen. I've seen so many authentic builds of different ships that it's more daunting than inspiring.  :D
