Hi everyone,
Late last week I decided to to get out of the cold and snow in Salt Lake City and head south to LA for the Grand Slam Trek convention at the Burbank airport Marriot. I got there early, which was good because by 11 am parking was non-existant. I was mainly there to get some of my Playmates figures in my collection autographed, with Patrick Stewart, and Bobby Clack (the Gorn) being at the top of my list. Lavar Burton, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn, and Patrick Stewart were there, as was Bobby Clark, and Robert Picardo, along with numerous other Trek, Battlestar Galatica, and Babylon 5 cast members. This was the first convention that I had been to in close to 20 years, and I was pretty happy with how they had it set up for autographs. For everyone but the headlining seven TNG actors you could just walk right up to their vendors table and chat with them, get an autograph, ect, which I found quite enjoyable. For the top six TNG actors you had to get a ticket and wait until they posted a group of numbers with your number in it. The wait wasn't too bad for everyone except Frakes. While I didn't get autographs from them, I heard that Sirtis, Spiner, and especially Burton were very pleasent and friendly with the fans. I did get autographs from Mcfadden, and she was quite chatty. Frakes seemed a bit disinterested at first, but then got talkative. The only disappointment for me was Dorn who acted hung over, or like he really didn't want to be there. For Patrick Stewart you had to buy tickets at $80 a pop (yikes!) in advance. Once he started to sign, it took close to two hours to meet him, and it was very, very brief. Robert Picardo was a pleasure to meet, and that wry sense of humor that he had as Voyager's Doctor is quite genuine I assure you! Bobby Clark was a treat to meet and he took great pride when I told him that his Gorn character scared the poop out of me when I was a kid watching Trek reruns with my dad in the 70's! Chase Masterson was supposed to be there, and I had my Leeta figure for her to autograph, but she never showed on Saturday. I heard that she was there Friday though. A nice bonus for me was that I met a guy selling off his Playmates Trek collection an bought close to 30 common figures from him. Nothing hard to get, but it sure is nice to be able to see the condition of the figures packaging first hand (no crappy ebay pic), not have to deal with shipping costs/damage, and no tax. All in all I had a lot of fun even though I didn't attend any of stage presentations. I'm really looking forward to the Vegas show in August even though the place will be as hot as a blast furnace ;0) Fred K.

Yeah, it was a lot of fun for sure! Plus it was nice to be out of the %&($#@ snow! I washed three months worth of road grime and salt off of my car in shorts and tee shirt in 82 degree weather! I even got to see that glowing thing in the sky (I think its called "the sun"), and blue skies! All in all a very enjoyable few days ;0)
