#93609 Toys R Us stores closing down

Posted by 1701D on 23 March 2018 - 09:19 AM

Yeah from various toy hunt videos I watch on YouTube, Id say that Toys R Us in the states was vastly superior to that of Toys R Us in the UK.

Smyths Toys in the UK seem to have really expanded here in the UK and really showed TRU for what it was; an expensive soulless shed, full of overpriced toys.

while I enjoy shows like nBSG, I'm more than just a bit tired of all that bleekness and darkness. Especially in science fiction.

You are absolutely right and personally this is what Discovery has got so wrong. Trek should be the bastion of optimism and aspiration and while many stories in Trek were darker than others, the future was always a bright and optimistic place - that was the point of Star Trek. Discovery goes against that and whilst it might be a great show, The Orville is killing it by giving us the Star Trek series we should of got from Star Trek.

God, I miss the 90s... Playmates Star Trek, Kenners Jurassic Park, Ban-Dais Power Rangers, Lego... it was a glorious time.

Sweet looking packaging, brilliant these are being shown at a UK toy fair! Never saw anything from DST at the UK toy fair so hopefully these figures will be widely available. Already got the 7inch Kirk and Picard on pre order with Forbidden Planet.

Id rather TKuvma was cut in favour of a more prominent character from Discovery. I really hope that they dont just focus on TOS and TNG and they do mix it up with DS9 and Voyager characters at least.

Compared to The Orville, Star Trek: Discovery sucks as a Star Trek show. Thats its biggest downfall.

I think he perfect Star Trek show for 2018 would be a combination of Discovery and Orville. The optimistic, everyday humans in space experiencing episodic storylines nature of Orville, mixed with the scope and scale of Discovery.

Its really sad that a non Star Trek show is doing a better job at being a Star Trek show than Star Trek.

Its second biggest problem is that I dont think anyone who has worked on Star Trek in the past 12 years truly understands what the show needs. Its far too occupied trying to be something else and really begs the question as to why CBS didnt just do something else...

That being said. I think Discovery has a lot of great things about it and if it learns from The Orville AND from Star Treks of the past then itll be an incredible show because it has so much of Star Trek canon to play with.

The JJ-A would be brilliant as a special. Id love a jumbo sized version of the 2009 Enterprise too.

You sound just like the idiots that complain about Trump and people who support him being full of hate and backward, yet Clinton supporters exhibit the most hateful , moronic behavior, but yet accuse republicans of doing exactly what the Democrats do. Progress is not destroying the family and supporting homosexual relationships. I don't hate people that are involved in unhealthy relationships, but I don't condone their behavior either. There was absolutely nothing wrong with Kirk kissing Uhura in TOS. I don't concentrate on race, skin color is irrelevant. Behavior and character is what's important.People need to grow up and quit pretending. If your a man, act like one. It's pretty easy to figure out which bathroom to use if you use your brain.

I neither support Clinton or Trump. Personally I think your whole country is backwards in coming forwards. As is mine. I think the whole political system is shot to shit quite frankly and will ultimately be the planets undoing.

If that is your opinion though VF, then you are welcome to it. I guess even the most backward thinking people in our societies are allowed a forum in which to speak their utter nonsense.

However, how you can call yourself a Star Trek fan, when Star Trek throughout its 51 years has supported equality, diversity, progressive ideas and the idea that in the future it wont matter how you decide to live your life, is beyond me.

VF, Star Trek isnt the problem here, you are the problem. The only good that has come from talking to you, is that no one else here seems to share your homophobic, sexist, misogynistic, hypocritical and backward opinions and views.

You are an utter disgrace to not just the Star Trek fan community but to the human race as a whole. You will burn for all eternity with the likes of Trump in the hell you do wish to live in. You are truly as disgusting a man as that orange baffoon Putin put in the White House.

I said you deserve a forum to express your opinions... this is not that forum. I would therefore ask you as a man, to do the manly thing and kindly ask you to remove your account and go and find the rock in which others like you voice their hatred from.

There is no Vulcan left in you, youre just a fanatic.

It all makes sense now.

By its very nature, Star Trek is a very liberal show. Not just because of its original premise laid out 51 years ago by a liberal man, but down to the fact that most in Hollywood are liberal. Its progressive. It embraces people of all belief, faith, race and sex. If you voted Trump, chances are Star Trek will not appeal to you beyond the materialistic aspect of the franchise; the ships, aesthetic etc...

That I understand is a sweeping generalisation but as generalisations go... its perhaps a pretty accurate one.

You still havent explained what it is you dont like about this show beyond its look... I think regardless of your beliefs etc... your argument falls completely flat on its face when you cant even elaborate on why you dislike Discovery so much, why you disliked the JJ Abrams movies so much and why you disliked Enterprise so much beyond them not visually tying into what has come before and why, if you have disliked so much of recent Star Trek, you continue to troll this message board with very old fashioned ways of thinking about humankind and society. Your arguments are continuously irrelevant, short sighted, backward and flawed.

Unfortunately VF, if you cant embrace change in Star Trek or indeed in real life, then you are going to find yourself fighting a very very difficult and loosing battle. If you think a conservative way is a way forward then you are even more ignorant of the future and of change than youve presented yourself here.

Now I understand that everyone has a right to choose and to believe in what they want, but everyone must accept and embrace that life, which Star Trek is a part of, will continue to change as the world continues to change. You either accept that or die fighting against what is happening naturally.

When all is said by us here. CBS knows their brand more than us. We know what we love, we get Star Trek because weve followed every incarnation of this franchise. What we dont know is the business side of things that cbs and paramount go on in making a decision about where to go to next.

Discovery is a success because its a great Star Trek series - yes Ive had my problems with it, as has everyone else here, but its also a success because CBS knew where to take Star Trek and how they wanted to move it forward. Plus I think they understand the truth that is most Star Trek fans are happy enough with new, good Star Trek on TV, on the big screen, in comics, books etc...

What we say here is relevant to each other on here. Its irrelevant to what CBS know about the franchise as a whole through statistics and the statistics have proven to be correct when you point to the success Discovery has had. So being a huge hit, not just for All Access, but for Netflix too, when fans like VF show their true colours, you understand why CBS went the way they went with Discovery.

When did people become so uncomfortable with the fiction part of science-fiction?

When the fiction became simply magic, unexplained magic.

#91867 Star Trek: Discovery. Series talk and discussion

Like Goth, I dont think Discovery is the best Star Trek series. Its not the worse though and 6 episodes in, its going somewhere.

I think the criticisms Ive heard from people like Robert Meyer Burnett and Jason Inman are warranted and ultimately I totally think this series should of been set in the future from everything that has come before it. It is heavy handed with how its dealing with canon and continuity and it clearly hasnt found its space legs just yet, theres a lot going on and 6 episodes in, Im still not sure where this show is headed - i think that is more to do with the tumultuous conception of this show where theyre taking bits and pieces of Fullers story. it is for me very much a love hate relationship. I love some of the things theyve done but I hate a lot of what theyve done too.

Having said that, I cant stop watching it, this is such a weird show! Its production levels are top notch, the acting is superb, the stories have been gripping, the scripts have been tight, it seems like it knows where its going, quietly confident of its own destiny. it is good TV, and theyve certainly got people on this show who really understand what has come before it. Lets not forget this is its first season, and I definitely believe it has the potential to lead into something even better for season 2.

I definitely think that more Star Trek alumni need to be brought in to flesh out this series; Manny Coto, Ronald D. Moore, Ira Behr. People who really intimately understand Star Trek and what it is. I think a lot of the executives on the show will be cut away for season 2 and you know I hope more people whove worked behind the scenes on Star Trek are bought in to do the CGI, make up, costuming, etc and for it to find its own path by not forcing canon into it so much but becoming the period piece it needed to be from the outset. Id definitely like to see some more visual nods to the TOS era but not necessarily every episode they throw canon at us. It needs to create its own canon that will eventually tie into TOS.

I think something needs to happen that sets both the Klingons and starfleet back in terms of technology and a reason is given for the difference in look.

Stylistically speaking, I could do with less CGI, maybe raise the brightness on some of the exterior shots of space etc... and I could do with more visual tie ins to TOS.

Those words have already changed in meaning over the centuries so perhaps VF, in the future, people wont care about words like fuck and shit as much as we take them as mildly offensive today. Fuck Yeah!

Our society is not devolving. There are clear problems but we are learning, slowly, but learning nevertheless. Society and as a result Star Trek has and is clearly changing in a way you (and Im sure others) are threatened by. Youre scared. You wont accept change, you havent accepted change and unless you do or unless you are forced to accept a new status quo, I doubt very much youll change at all and thats sad because change is an essential part of life.

I was communicating that someone I work with made his own independent decision to not watch this show any more as well based on many factors but the f bomb was the last straw for him. So there are other people dissatisfied with this show besides me, a great deal from what I see on social media. I choose not to watch any more of this disappointing show but if I have more pertinent data to add in this thread, I plan to do it .

Im sure your work colleague has a tongue in his head to be able to sign up to this forum to talk himself about his opinion on Discovery - lord knows we need new members in this place.

I just think youre bitching (yes I swore because Star Trek inspired me to do so) for the sake of bitching because youre bitter.

Bitter about how Star Trek isnt the way you remember it and isnt the way you want your Star Trek to be. Well, sorry but it is what it is now and honestly, while I dont agree with everything theyre doing in Discovery, at least theyre still taking risks with a 51 year old franchise when they could of played it very safe indeed with a show that resembles tos or tng. its good that they feel their able to play with Star Trek more and take more risks with the way they tell a Star Trek story.

All in all Discovery seems to be working with its audience. I think a lot more fans are enjoying it than not and while sure Id have much preferred a show based beyond Voyager and Nemesis. This is actually pretty good television. Star Trek will go on and thats a great thing.

#91670 Star Trek: Discovery. Series talk and discussion

Posted by 1701D on 11 October 2017 - 10:07 AM

I think its really the formula of Discovery that doesnt really work for what Star Trek IS.

What is Star Trek though? Is it a show about a specific thing? Is it a show about war? Or is it a show that is defined by the driving principles of a single crew that seeks out strange new worlds...

To me Star Trek is the very best of humanity going out there and exploring and figuring things out. Its through the aliens we find the moral dilemmas and issues we face on our planet today. Humanity though, has made it through our petty differences - in a way it is humanity that is more alien in Star Trek than the aliens; thats actually quite a cool concept.

Thats not to say that Discovery doesnt have very Star Trek elements to it; it does and to say that it isnt Star Trek is a bit short sighted - its not like the Star Treks weve come to love, its a wacky and weird version of Star Trek but theres some big ideas, big themes and big concepts being posed in this show. I think though theyve forgone or discarded some of the defining ideas Gene Roddenberry had and thats to the shows detriment and when season 2 does come, I really hope they address the importance and idealism of Roddenberrys vision wholesale, its a vision that really needs to be reintroduced to a new generation rather than this idea of making Star Trek appealing by it being driven by war or saving earth, because I think if Discovery continues on this war/dark/conflict driven path then it looses what Star Trek was always about and becomes something else entirely.

There needs to be a way in which this crew start working together to defeat Lorca, to bring the Klingons to the table rather than the battlefield, to truly evolve from this rather dystopian Starship with this funky drive system, into the starfleet we know in TOS and TNG and even the later spin off series. It has to show the evolution into Gene Roddenberrys philosophy and vision of humanity in the future.
