I liked it too, and agree that some of the jokes were a bit forced... I thought it started slow, but it finished strong... by the 3rd act it hooked me.

There were some definite and respectful nods to Trek... but its not Trek... I too will be back to see where they take it!

It has me interested for sure, im just hoping they go more towards subtle humor versus in your face, forced humor as the series goes on.

I'll give the first episode a meh+ and keep trying to watch each week. They're gonna need to fill in these characters. Not a fan of the robot guy...

So, the main storylines are clearly episodic, but the relationships I think will build. I really didn't know what to expect based on the hype and the few reviews I read... They worked in the 1st officer and helmsmans backstory nicely for the 1st episode... and I think we'll see the rest fleshed out soon... the robot guy just had very little in the pilot... so I think I'll wait and see what they do with him.

Star Trek: Discovery has nothing to worry about from The Orville. This review sums it up for me:

About 15 minutes in, my wife had to ask if this was supposed to be a comedy. Needless to say it didn't hook her. I fell asleep in the third act.

Yep, the reviews aren't glowing... and I think it did suffer a bit because it doesn't seem sure of what it wants to be yet.

Still I'm gonna give it sometime... its def something different from Trek.

Spoiler

According to show runners, it's a new genre:

http://www.hollywood...plained-1036923

So I guess if I don't like it, it's because I went in with the wrong expectations. (Expectations born of only the first preview but wrong nonetheless, apparently.)

I might check out future episodes but I won't be seeking it out. Nothing in the premiere screamed "Must-See TV!" to me. If I'm waxing nostalgic for TNG I'll watch TNG and I outgrew this brand of humor a very long time ago. Coming from a guy who still collects toys, that's saying something.

I think it should have 30 minutes not a hour too long for the plot

I was thinking the same thing. Half an hour would have been more tolerable.

I know it's really paying homage to TNG stylistically but being so slavish to that show just makes it feel stiff and dated. Galaxy Quest managed to have it both ways, by being a loving satire of 90's sci-fi and a contemporary comedy/action film. This show is struggling to do either.

I'm just glad it doesn't have a laugh track.

I took it more serious... but as one critic put it... MacFarlane just can't help throwing in a joke... even if its supposed to be serious.

much of the backstory was kinda needed to make the final act work... I guess they could have gotten there quicker.

and yes.. a laugh track would have been a mess.

If there was a laugh track, I probably would have just turned it off.

I enjoyed it but I typically enjoy Macfarlanes work. I'm not one of those people that are afraid to enjoy stupid or crass humor. I thought it was funny, the effects were good and it was an overall fun show. I also didn't up into it hoping it would be something like a new version of Star Trek. I knew it was going to be a little whaky and off the wall. I will definitely keep tuning in. To hell with stuck up critics.

Critic reviews are bullshit anyways.

Theyre just opinion pieces, and cant really give you a good answer as to whether something is good or not.

FYI the first episode is currently free on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play if youre in the US.

Cant wait to watch it without commercials.

I dont know if its free other places, but it wouldnt hurt to check.

Im really hoping CBS does the same with Discoverys first episode. It would give people access to it if they cant get CBS for whatever reason.

That review is pretty spot on to how I feel.

The show has a lot of potential, it just needs to find the proper balance between comedy and drama. I really hope Fox does end up giving it the time it needs to do so.

Finally got to see the whole thing. I had high expectations and it pretty much met them. I would like to see some more interesting stories, but obviously being a pilot they're just trying to set it up. It was so amazingly refreshing to finally see something that portrays a future that isn't dystopian.
