Good god Chuck referred to Voyager as "the Voyager." I've never liked it when people refer to it like that, it just sounds wrong.

I'm intrigued by the comment that they're working on new variants for some of their ships. I don't usually do variants, but I'm still curious as to what they might be.

People enquiring as to the Titan, and Star Trek Online's Enterprise-F - I like their style! I'm going to write in and ask for a 1/350 scale Enterprise-E.

 

EDIT: Yeah, it's weird how with some names, it sounds better (or even correct) to leave out the 'the' in front of their name, as with Voyager. This reminds me of that one episode where they're caught in a singularity, and after realising they've been hailing/seeing themselves, Tom Paris stands up and says, "It's the Voyager!" Don't know why, but it makes me cringe every time. lol

Yep.  Always made my skin crawl when they said "Enterprise" instead of "The Enterprise" in ENT.

I like it when the characters or people refer to the ship as The Enterprise, it sounds more important and feels like the proper pronunciation of it than just I'll be onboard Enterprise... That doesn't sound right.

 

Its great to hear the reliant is coming, but yeah, beyond that this is just another example of how these AskDST's are really loosing their edge... I mean does it even matter that DST does this anymore?

For me it all depends on what ship you're talking about.

Voyager is Voyager
The 1701 through 1701-E is the Enterprise
The Defiant is the Defiant
The NX-01 is Enterprise

Then why did Sisko shout "Defiant!" to the turbo lift all the time?

Maybe he just doesn't like the Cardassian turbo lift so he's just short with it.

I guess I'm conditioned by 10+ seasons and 12 movies to want to hear them say "the Enterprise."

Tuvok47, I know exactly how you feel. I understand why "the" was dropped in reference to Voyager, as "the Voyager" just sounds awkward, but with the Enterprise, I find the missing "the" to sound weird. The Defiant has been referred to both with and without a "the" in front of it, and while I think "the Defiant" usually sounds more natural, "Defiant" without a "the" in front of it sounds a bit more "forceful/snappy," and fitting for a ship that's intended for military use rather than exploration. As for The Sisko, I'm pretty sure he just says "Defiant" because he wants the turbolift to know his mood when he needs to get to the ship that reflects it.

That was the answer in reference to a TWOK really release. Maybe a TMP variant? Sounds like an opportunity to finally get a great/less flawed release of the refit.

I've said it before. If DST fixes the TWOK's light bleed, adds lights on, and keeps the pearlescent paint job, I'd buy another one in a heart beat.

Absolutely with you on that one Alteran. I have yet to pick up the refit because of the horror stories i've seen posted here and youtube of the plastic being translucent and bleeding light from internal LED's and allowing light to pass through the plastic making the ship look really cheap.

 

All for DST taking another crack at her and using a nicer non-pearlescent type of plastic!

My TWOK will always be special to me, she was the first ship in my collection, and is what started it all. For me to replace her the new one would have to be as perfect as it can be.

If they could replace the translucent plastic with normal plastic, and give us the pearlescent look with paint apps, I'd be all for it. While the A's plastic is certainly better, having two ships look virtually the same with a letter and slightly different shades of blue for the detailing being the only differences would be rather disappointing for me.

I was kind of hoping that we'd get another TSFS "just–before–freefall" release, but with the possibility of some additional sounds like the computer counting down to bring the ship in line with DST's current offerings. I know DST did their own TWOK version with battle damage that was actually from TWOK, but TSFS version is the one I'd be more interested in, especially since DST has done so many awesome ships from TSFS, with the refit 1701 and the Oberth–class really being the only two outliers. While I "get" not doing the U.S.S. Grissom, (even though I'd buy one in a heartbeat since I have everything else from TSFS,) I don't quite "get" not doing another battle–damaged TSFS 1701 given how insanely priced the old Art Asylum one is. (I'm still kicking myself for not being able to pick this up when it was first released given how quickly it sold out.) I'm a bit surprised to hear Chuck mention that variants of the Constitution–class refit are being considered since it sounds like they weren't going with the obvious choice, (a pre–freefall TSFS variant,) and pretty much added an "Easter Egg" to the new 1701–A to avoid a variant from TFF, so I'm guessing that a TMP variant may indeed be in the works by process of elimination, but I have to admit that I didn't see it coming. I just didn't think DST would ever consider it since I expected I'd be the only one interested in it, unlike a battle damaged 1701 from TSFS right before freefall that I'm sure DST would be able to sell without much effort.

The refit has kind of been all over the board in terms of quality, in part because of that tricky pearlescent paint scheme that gave us the Enterprise–A on the big screen to begin with.

 

• First release: Lots of light bleed; if you put your hand above the ship and hold it under a lamp, you can see your hand's shadow through it
• Second release: Marginally better than the first release; this was a "silent reissue" done almost immediately after the first release sold out, and the only way to tell the two apart inside of the packaging is to look at the font used for the UPC, the second release use a smaller, serif font instead of the slightly larger sans serif font from the first. There's definitely less light bleed, but not in a hugely noticeable way
• Third release: If I remember correctly, this was the absolute worst of the worst; the ship's lights just came out of everywhere to the point where it made the first release look like it had almost no light bleed
• Fourth/most recent release: I believe this is considered the best to date, the plastic is a bit better than previous releases, but the lights are still brighter than before, and even though there are still some issues with light bleed, it's not as bad as it was in the past

Also, didn't the third release switch to different LEDs? I cycled through the FX on my first release TWOK 1701 the other night while having my 1701–A in "lights–on" mode and noticed the deflector dish on the TWOK 1701 was more cyan than "deep blue" like the newer ships are. Is this just a change with the 1701–A, or did DST also do this for the TWOK 1701? I seem to recall the third release changing to different LEDs that might have had deeper colors like those in the 1701–A.

 

I'm also all for a redone TWOK like they did for Ent A & also permanent lights on feature, not just 10secs.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if DST redid the TWOK 1701 now that they're releasing the Reliant. The current TWOK 1701 has quite a few sound clips from Khan on it, and I can't imagine those not potentially overlapping with sound clips that DST might prefer to use for the Reliant. Likewise, I can't imagine people being thrilled with sounds from the TWOK 1701 and sounds from the Reliant overlapping, so I could see DST using the release of the Reliant to help justify reissuing the TWOK 1701 with a new sound chip that uses different clips in place of some of Khan's dialogue if that dialogue is moved over to the Reliant. However, given that according to Chuck, DST doesn't have another run of the TWOK 1701 planned at this time, I'm guessing that they might just use entirely different sound clips on the Reliant, which would probably make more sense.

What I'd really like to see in the future for ships that don't have a separate lights–on button is the following feature:

 

• Press and release the bridge dome button once to hear a sound, press it again for the next sound exactly like what we have now
• Press and hold the bridge dome button for lights–on mode like the new TOS 1701, 1701–A, and NX–01
• Press and release the bridge dome button in lights–on mode for ambient bridge sounds like on the new TOS 1701 and NX–01, press and release it again to shut the lights/sound off
• Press and hold the bridge dome button in lights–on mode to cycle through all sounds like on the 1701–E and earlier ships

Basically, this would give us lights–on and ambient bridge sounds, but it would also still give us the ability to cycle through every sound like we had before; alternatively, the battery compartment's "Try Me" mode switch could have an extra setting that switches between whether holding the bridge dome provides lights–on or cycles through all sounds, but that might require slight tooling modifications that I could understand DST not wanting to do, while the extra pressing of the bridge dome would just require some changes to how the electronics function without any new tooling.

 

I'm glad to hear that DST seems optimistic about a Voyager toy though, and I hope that Chuck is able to do more DS9 stuff; if it's the other ship ending in "iant," I'll definitely buy one, even though I'd prefer having a U.S.S. Voyager and Enterprise–C first. I'll also pick up a U.S.S. Saratoga if DST releases one, since that Miranda–class mold is obviously going to need some variants, and DS9 has at least one good one that I'd pay for.

 

As for a license for the new show, I certainly hope that DST tries to obtain one; I'd love to see their take on the 2017 series, and given who CBS Inc. has been hiring for it, it seems like it'll be yeilding the kind of stuff that's right in DST's wheelhouse. I can only hope Bryan Fuller likes DST's Trek toys as much as he likes other action–figure lines, as that could definitely work in our favor. Given that CBS Inc. is already working with DST for the current license, I'd hope that DST at least gets a chance to grab the license for the new series, and hope even moreso that they wind up with the license.

 

I have to admit I'm kind of surprised that Paramount hasn't approached DST about their interest in a license for the JJ–verse yet; Playmates made a mess with the license in 2009, (not entirely their fault given the state of the economy at the time, but the quality of the basic figures and incomplete assortments didn't do them any favors,) Hasbro didn't even bother with action figures or electronic ships in 2013. Meanwhile, DST has been wanting a license for the JJ–verse since Trek XI was announced, and I don't see anyone else lining up to produce "Beyond" toys, so I would think Paramount would go to the company that already has a hand in highly regarded Trek toys and see if they'd be interested in doing some JJ–verse stuff.

...Actually, that's all I've ever been doing, really.

 

Anyway, I had a rough year in '07, and my friends banded together and got me the TWOK ship. I was overawed.

I don't really count my playmates ships as being first since they were more for playing than collecting.

 

I have the RBoP somewhere in a box at my parents house, a Borg Sphere....somewhere, and I had the Phoenix before I took it apart, thus destroying it. 

 

The only reason I started collecting at all was because I saw an ad in a Skymall magazine for the TOS Enterprise when I was flying to Georgia with my Mom and Sister. Ended up buying the TWOK because I liked the refit more than the original.
