Seeing the special features on Season 2 of Enterprise (awesome btw) got me thinking about some of the ideas they had shot down. Ultimately it sounds like Enterprise was a show that was on the wrong network and done at the wrong time but had it been done at the right time, it would have been franchise changing had Berman and Braga and then Chris Black and the writing team got their way.

It got me thinking about how that series would have looked had we seen the first season set on Earth, exploring the journey to the vision Roddenberry had of humanity, I'd have loved to see the conflict between humans and aliens and how eventually they overcame those things, building towards the launching of the Enterprise, through the pain of risking lives in test ships, coming to terms with people dying because of it and ultimately at the end seeing the ship being launched you'd have felt like it was such an important thing after seeing all that they (the characters) had to go through to get to this incredible point where humanity was about to step out of the door into the black of space, really building the excitement of the words STAR and TREK. I just loved the sound of that idea.

How do you guys think Enterprise should have been conceived?

Actually I must say that I think Enterprise is a terrific show. I liked the beginning of it, Broken Bow being one of the better Trek pilots, in my opinion. I liked most of the season 1 & 2 episodes, and compared to other Trek shows, the first seasons were more coherent and less "bumpy" (think Code of Honor...). Some of the best episodes (and some of the best Trek-episodes) were from seasons 1 & 2 (Shuttlepod 1, Dear Doctor, The Andorian Incident, Carbon Creek, Minefield, The Catwalk, First Flight...).

I liked the storytelling. I liked that they tried to put the focus more on character driven stories. Then came season 3, which at first reminded me of the dreadful war-arcs in DS9, which wasn't my cup of tea. Revisiting those episodes, however, made me realize how interesting the concept of a 1 season story arc was and that there still was room for (stand-alone-ish episodes).

Season 4 then incorporated more original Trek elements (something I had already enjoyed in the early seasons), trying to tie in more to the other shows. And still, the 3 episode story arcs were a great idea.

I know there's been talk about mis-casting the lead actors etc. I couldn't agree less. In my opinion, this show has the most talented cast, right down to the minor roles. I would say, though, that Hoshi and Travis had not enough to do, no room for development.

I really don't understand some of the recurring criticism. Honestly, I've recently spoken about this to a friend of mine, and she said she didn't like it because she didn't like the uniforms and look of it. So she didn't watch it. It looked indeed different, but it had to. Other than that, I found that Enterprise brought real characters back (comparable to the likes of Bones and Scotty) and presented this "everything in deep space is new to us"-feel pretty well. It was a lot closer to the original show and the original idea, yet presented with a more contemporary storytelling and more interesting characters and character stories.

I liked Enterprise and think it had some great moments but also had some miss steps. Overall the idea and path they started out on worked very well for me. I liked the actors too. My biggest complaint about the show was that they kind of went off on the very long Xindi arc that drug out way to long and didn't exactly pay off the build up. i would have liked to see some more build up of being the first ship exploring the unknown and all of the new discovery's that go with that and a little less of the constant struggle to be the only defense earth has from attack.

The look and feel to me were great.

I totally agree that it was a show that was on the wrong network for the wrong people in control of the studio...and possibly at the wrong time too.

I think the general concept of ENT was not in itself flawed with the possible exception of the "Temporal Cold War" subplot (which, even as an ENT fan I'm still going WTF?!!!!)

There were a lot of things that worked for ENT in terms of writing and overall concepts. But a lot of it got lost in pacing and editing. And yes, I'm loathsome to admit it, but acting too. While I adore Scott Bakula's work, I was never quite convinced that Captain Archer was not about to begin shinning blue and have a flash of white at any moment *reference to Quantum Leap*. I always felt that he was trying too hard to "be" the character. Similar to Avery Brooks' issues in the first season of DS9.

Also, because of the network and the execs I felt there was too much emphasis on T&A that was forced. I know TOS had 1000x's more T&A moments, but it felt more organic for the time. With ENT, it felt like the T&A moments were injected unsuccessfully into a show that could not find any other way to meet the requirements.

In regards to season 3: Honestly I think the franchise needed the conflict that the Xindi arc brought. (For the record I LOVED the Dominion War story lines from DS9...honestly, it's still some of the most impactful and personally relatable stories from any of the Trek series). But I also agree that it dragged on for far too long. And they weren't nearly as successful as the DS9 storylines either.

When we got to season 4, I loved the new feel of the stories, but again felt like the pacing never quite gave the show what it needed. Some stories did not really need a 2 or 3 episode arc. And some felt like they needed more time to mature.

I would've loved to have seen a 5th season as I felt ENT had finally found it's "voice" as a series and could've taken us to some exciting heights.

I think Enterprise needed to be a show that took its time to answer the question that really needed and still needs answering... How did humanity go from where we are today (or as close as you can get to in Trek) to the enlightened humanity we saw in TOS and further down the timeline... TNG.

I would have loved to have seen a less perfect but equally topical and relevant iteration of Star Trek that actually showed us how Roddenberry's vision was reached.

Agreed. And I think given the correct venue/network they could've done a better job of it. Plus, I have to agree that it was too soon after the end of VOY for a new series to be launched. They should've waited a few years.

I agree with Wildcard that the temporal war thread was a mistake. I really didn't care for the Xindi thread either, but if its a choice between the temperal cold war or the Xindi arc, i'll take the Xindi.  I found the pacing to be fine otherwise, especially the 4th season, and I agree, by season 4 it had found its voice.

I thought the Temporal Cold War was such a convoluted mess but watching the special features (that's right Star Trek with proper special features all in one set...) you kind of get the feeling Berman and Braga didn't want to use it anyway and Coto didn't like it either but since they went with it I'd have liked to have seen it wound up properly within Season 3 with "Future Guy" being Archer from the future trying to derail his own early day missions for some reason.

It should have been syndicated. 8 years later people are really talking about Enterprise and there's a desire to see it continue. I think you kind of look at these things with a bit more perspective after having the time for it to wash over you and really Enterprise is a really nicely done show. The production values were incredible and even today the CGI still holds up very well. I think the only episode that is really terrible was Precious Cargo...

If it continued I'd like to see "These are the Voyages" scrubbed and forgotten, death of Trip? Never happened.

I'd like to see 5 extra seasons, I'd like to see it in syndication, serialized and a show that shows the beginnings of the Romulan Wars that lead to the formation of the Federation of Planets as well as the exploration of strange new worlds as well as familiar worlds we first saw in TOS. The Enterprise Nx-01 at some point in the series gets that make-over that's floating around on the net atm but using the same sets, same main cast adding Shran to it as a regular, same crew, same production values, filmed using current TV filming methods and created by: Braga, Moore, Coto with Fuller and a class team of young and fresh writers of both sci-fi and TV.

You could show it on Netflix but I'd like to see it on regular TV too especially in the UK on BBC 2 again.

I think it should be a family show but not shy away from being a bit scary, and intelligently written. Something for kids and something for adults.

Also lets forget about appealing to a Star Trek newbie, lets see a Star Trek TV series that expects people watching have watched the last 4 seasons of Enterprise (minus TatV) and be done with it. There are enough Trekkies out there who will watch a well-written Star Trek TV series for CBS/Paramount/Netflix to do it that way.

They could start another series with a semi change in crew?  Keep the captain as well as Tpol and the rest are expendable.  If you put Jeffrey Combs on full time as the tactical officer it would blow up.  On the extras I saw that they wanted him anyway.
