#96777 Deep Space Nine Doc “What We Left Behind”

Posted by Jay K on 10 May 2020 - 07:12 AM

Massively late to the party with this (life just gets in the way sometimes). Truth be told, I'll hold my hands up first of all and say that I found it online somewhere, simply because I needed the distraction right now, combined with the realisation that I actually forgot about it in the first place. My shame (on both counts), but only temporarily, as I need the blu-ray version of this as soon as possible. Far too tired and drunk right now to mooch online for it, I'll do that tonight, but yeah, wow.

We all have those shows that are special to us; whether it be because we grew up with them or any other myriad of reasons, but DS9 is that show for me. For years I couldn't choose between it and TNG, but purely speaking for myself, I finally feel fully able to admit that I love it so much more than any other iteration of Star Trek. I know that's patently clear for all to see on this forum, especially over the years, but away from here, and even within myself, I've always been conflicted by the fact that DS9 is the Star Trek show that wasn't about actual exploration, and in fact centred around a massive conflict in its latter seasons. However, as they so eloquently put across in the documentary, the show is an exploration of one's inner self (and I'd argue society as a whole), as opposed to a fictitious galaxy.

The remastered HD scenes are breathtaking (jesus, will we ever see it fully upgraded, and in 16:9 as well - what an amazing treat it was to see that), the in-jokes were wonderful, as were the music and interviews. It was everything I wanted and more, and also, I have to be honest, everything I feared it'd be as well. The writer's room...shit. I now want to see that story so much, it was a wonderful tease but truthfully, a genuinely painful one (for a number of reasons, not least because I really dislike all the current iterations of Star Trek, and I was immediately gripped by the things they were discussing). I wept throughout the whole thing, but I had to pause a few times, mainly on the writer's room parts that mentioned Nog and Odo, now obviously a lot more sombre.

I honestly could go on and on (Max Grodénchik singing that version of Heart in San Francisco, Andrew Robinson is amazing, the line Ira says regarding Section 31 - it was in the latest film at the time but screw it, it's our creation, that had me almost shouting yes out loud, and the closing song from the Trek Rat Pack!), but yeah, needless to say this is a must-watch for all trekkies, and an amazing love letter to the fans, and was just what I needed right now. I can't wait to get the blu-ray to see the extras. And start work on that model kit I just bought last week, which now has a great photo etch upgrade set that I'm going to get to make sure it's a true studio replica. :D

#96528 New Star Trek Series starring Patrick Stewart

Star Trek to me was always about showing humanity as having moved on from how we are today, whilst using the troubles of alien races to highlight problems that are relevant and current to our present day situation. To see this aspect gone (something I dearly loved about Star Trek), makes for painful viewing to me.

For the price this will cost, this is easily the worst model of the D I've ever seen.

Aoshima still way out in the lead for me, with the DST version bring up the best of the rest in second (not including model kits by the way).

for a while there, I thought we scared Zach away with all the pitchforks we would have pointing at him.

#95551 Star Trek: Section 31

Posted by Jay K on 15 January 2019 - 12:05 AM

DS9 is my favourite show, but I've always feared that in the wrong hands, the whole 'section 31' angle could be used in a very harmful way towards the franchise - potentially being used to change the whole complexion of what Star Trek was. :(

Lovely, can't wait to see! Show it next to your 1701-D (always enjoy seeing scales/having a point of reference). :D

Such a nice pairing these two, just randomly.

#94911 Star Trek - The Official Starships Collection

I'm definitely still getting this one. I haven't bought any ships in a long time, but this and the recently announced tug from DS9 are must-buys for me (I was a deckhand on tugs in real life a long time ago :D ).

Thanks for clarifying Hobs - reason I ask is because I'll definitely fix it (friend will be able to make me a stencil, and I'll use his airbrush). I'll get around to doing that when I make the Defiant kit (which I still haven't bought yet).

Only other XL models I'm waiting for/would consider buying, are the Excelsior and a Runabout. The C could be lovely, but DST have that covered. If they ever make any XL non-hero ships, there would obviously be a few there that I'd consider (Prometheus that magnetically splits into three would be a dream for one).

Lovely, any chance of seeing your Defiant next to it (love seeing scale pictures)? :)

A bit off-topic, but Rick Berman's comments on the show's writer made me feel a little bit better. I just hope the show 'looks' authentic, and isn't a complete style reboot (a la recent films/Discovery).

Randomly, the Refit/A on the poster is because that poster was made by Andy Probert - designer of both ships. :)

Prom, it's absolutely stunning. Simple as that. :D

First announcement of the day (Las Vegas Trek Convention):

If it comes out decent, it's a definite for me. I'd love to hang it from the ceiling, at a slight angle. :)

The Reliant looks to be the best XL ship by a country mile.

Prometheus, thanks for doing that man (and thanks for the tips). I can't wait to get it!
