#95526 The reason Trek Canon Is being erased?

Posted by Nigel on 10 January 2019 - 05:12 PM

Well, it's not an exact comparison...but the two franchises are related if you know the history. There was a brief comeback of M:I in the 80s but it wasn't all that good or well liked (perhaps like Enterprise wasn't?) so in 1995 we got the feature film which did great but, to me, diverged from the formula of the original series (Greg Morris reportedly hated it, I'm not sure how Nimoy or Graves felt). So M:I went on to be a totally different thing. The same happened with Star Trek 2009. Big, blockbuster film that departed from the formula of previous Treks and it hasn't been the same since. People say "well, there were people who said the same thing about TNG when it came out," but I was young when TNG came out and I grew up watching it, DS9 and Voyager. I didn't discover TOS until the 2004 DVD release (I had seen it before but wasn't able to see much). So I guess there are people now who have "grown up" with Chris Pine as Kirk and I guess the recent news would be not so great for them, they have my sympathy. I just "know what I like" and that is mainly TOS after the past 15 years. I re-watch it a few times a week. Sorry if I seem brash at times, I am not always as sensitive about things as I should be when I get talking online. I still love collecting Trek which is why I still come to these forums to see what people have to say about the new collectibles. Perhaps I shouldn't have waded into this subject and kept my mouth shut? Who knows.

They aren't interested in canon, continuity or fans. Just with making money by exploiting the franchise and its name. They did the same thing with Mission: Impossible when it became a feature film franchise.

Sorry I am late but Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you guys. My goal for the new year: finally get a DST Classic Communicator.

#95340 Status of DST's Star Trek license.

I noticed some re-issues of the TOS phaser and communicator showing up online with the brand new packaging look. I think there are some other re-issues also. It's the same packaging design as is being used by McFarlane. ebay had a 10% off deal on toys yesterday and I picked up a DST TOS phaser. It's my first ever DST role playing toy, can't wait to get it. Of course this means I'll have to get a Captain Kirk costume eventually and a communicator and tricorder :P

I got my McFarlane 7" Kirk and although the packaging is a bit minimal compared to AA/DST I think it is a better figure than the DST Kirk. I hope we do get Spock and the whole TOS crew (including Chapel & Rand).

Nigel, I wasn't talking about your posts, they were not the entertaining ones I meant. Sorry for the confusion.

So, someone calling the product "horrific" is more entertaining I guess. Probably everyone posting here has shelled out hundreds if not thousands of dollars for DST over the years. Keep that in mind when you're being sarcastic to us.

#88798 "New ‘Star Trek’ Series Coming to CBS in 2017"

Posted by Nigel on 10 March 2017 - 03:58 PM

Ok, I hold my hands up. I went too far. For that I apologise. Daysleeper and Nigel, guys I'm sorry.

What you should both know is that on the whole I do respect everyone's opinion but I do get frustrated when people aren't willing to be rational when it comes to commenting on Star Trek. It's silly when fans say that Abrams movies aren't real Star Trek or that they've judged this new series without seeing anything from it really but preferring to judge it on rumour and on a photo of a bunch of Klingons. That's really silly.

But look, again I apologise for going too far.

1701D, as I have said before I do enjoy and like many of your posts (especially your thoughts on the DST lines). I have gone a bit too far on forums before, too. You are a "member of our crew" and as Kirk would say "we're stronger with you than without you." So, I accept your apology. Really the only things that upset me were the name calling and negativity (on a personal level, not about Star Trek). I am fine with other people loving the Abrams films and being enthusiastic about Discovery because the success of those things make it more possible for us to get more classic trek toys and merchandise for the people who still want that sort of thing. My brothers are both fans of the new films and they are cool with me not being so much into it because they know I tend to be into retro stuff. So, power to ya as we say here. May Discovery be a grand success (and maybe we'll get some DS9 blu-rays or a Defiant/Voyager from its popularity). :P

It would be cool if we got a Sisko "Select" figure just so we could get the original command chair that they made but never released. With Voyager they could do 2-packs say Janeway with 7 of 9 in silver suit and The Doctor with 7 of 9 in purple suit.

I have sent DST an email requesting a new stand but I doubt they will seeing as I'm in Canada.

My favourite has to be the DST TOS re-issues of 2009 and the "new" Kirk head sculpt for the "Enemy Within" green wraparound tunic Kirk figure. Also, great figures like Kirk as a Romulan, Kang and the Romulan Centurion. The only figure from the main TOS ones I don't have is Uhura (but I have the original AA version). Would have been nice if they'd done a Chekov reissue. Second to that would be the original run of AA TOS figures especially wave 3 with Kor, Vina, the Gorn. It's just a shame we never got Chapel, Rand, Salt Vampire and the Romulan Commander.

#88506 The Future of the Diamond Select Star Trek line

Because the movies suck and serious collectors for the most part don't care about collecting memorabilia from a movie they don't care about.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I wanted to say that but I didn't want to "offend" anymore. Thanks, VulcanFanatic.

JMW you basically just said a lot of things I've wanted to say about DST for a long time but didn't want to "offend" the admins.

They're shooting themselves in the foot by not doing the D-7 battlecruiser. And yeah, they almost totally missed out on the opportunity that the 50th anniversary presented.
