The Romulan figure prototype recently sold for $4,517.00 + $158.45 shipping after 3 bids.
I think the bid amount is realistic, given the adage "go find another." Having said that, these usually trade in the $2-3K range, which is not small potatoes, so this could be a record if the auction for real. But they don't come up for sale often.
The seller writes:
"This is an original pre-production prototype of the Romulan action figure. The figure was never released. This is a hand painted resin figure sealed on a prototype card. The card has no graphics on the reverse, but has a penciled note. This type of prototype would have been used for photographs, sales meetings and the Toy Fair display. In the past, my company Whiz Bang! Toys handled the sale of many toy creators' personal collections. I have pictured one of my auctions featuring some of the Galoob prototypes. I will provide a Whiz Bang COA guaranteeing authenticity."
"I have had this and Wesley Crusher stored away for decades with the hope of not selling them. Unfortunately, the economy has gotten the best of me and I have to let them go. I have started the bidding at far below what I believe is fair market value. I will not sell them for less than minimum bid, so please, no low ball offers. Shipping will be FEDeX fully insured or an in person meet, there has been a handling cost added for insurance."
