Its been a long time since i posted about Battlestar Galactica, but the 35th anniversary Bluray disc of the original movie has been released recently, and i picked it up at Best buy. Apparently this is a Best buy exclusive for the time being at least. I have to say the remastering of original BSG in HD is a movie i am glad to see get a decent looking transfer at last. I wasnt impressed with the DVD transfer that came out years ago, but this bluray looks really good in my opinion. It reminded me of why i always preferred the original over Ronald D Moores version. The original shows the 12 colonies of man on 12 worlds, with a fleet of Battlestars that protect them from the agression of the cylons, who are a merciless race bent on the destruction of humans. In the original version of BSG, which debuted back in 1978, Cylons were not an invention of humans that eventually became sentiant and rebelled against their masters, Cylons were a mysterious race of beings that had battled the Humans for a 1000 years and were intent of domination and destruction of the human race. The series didnt last long enough to delve into the backstory of Cylons. Colonial Warriors were honorable and the human race was the same as we were, just more advanced. I enjoyed this series very much and i never missed an episode. In 1978/1979, it cost about 1 million dollars an episode to produce, which was extremely expensive in those days and apparently the ratings were not high enough to justify that kind of money on a series. Apparently ABC did get a lot of complaints after the show was cacelled after the first season. A revamped show called Galactica 1980 was made, with considerable changes to the show and an effort to make a cheaper show by shooting a lot more planet side shots rather than so many space fx shots. Galactica 1980 actually was supposed to be a fast forward through time to the Galactica's arrival on Earth. It only lasted about half a season, then was cancelled.

The reason for this topic is the release of the long awaited remastered original BSG movie and why i think it was a lot more wholesome and enjoyable to me. I like shows where you can tell who the good guy is and who the bad guy is.

The newer BSG was a well done show, very interesting and an excellent scifi show. I just wish it could have been named something else and based on other characters in another universe though, because it completely perverted what Original BSG fans loved about their show.

I've only seen a few episodes of the original. It was on a channel that we didn't have where I grew up, so I never saw all of them.

I do have a question, when you say "Movie" did ABC release the pilot in the theaters prior to the TV show to get/gauge interest?

I remember the TV execs did that with Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. The pilot, which was basically a 2-parter was shot and shown in theaters before being shown on TV.

Or was there a different actual Movie?

The first three parts of the series were edited together into a feature length movie and released in theaters, sometime after it was on TV. I saw it and the Buck rogers theatrical release too. The bluray disc that was recently released is the same as the theatrical release as far as i know.

I was thinking the other day about how Star Trek was pitched as "Wagon Train to the stars" because back the 60's, westerns were really big and there may have been more westerns that any other show when Star Trek came along. Well, Battlestar Galactica was actually closer to being the "Wagon train to the stars" than Star Trek was, considering how the similarity of the "Rag tag, fugitive fleet" that the Battlestar Galactica led in its quest for Earth, to a Wagon train bound for the west, maybe traveling the Oregon trail, encountering settlements along the way, perhaps Indians, and no doubt dealt with life and death situations, just as the Galactica did on its way to find Earth.

The reincarnation of BSG in the recent series of the last decade completely turned everything around, making the people of the colonies the bad guys because they enslaved a race of sentient robots that rebelled, came back and tried to wipe the humans out. There was no one to like in the new series. Unlike Star Trek , New BSG showed just how depraved the people were with no redeeming qualities. Star Trek was to show the progress of humanity in doing away with racism, hunger, war and disease. I would like to live in a Star Trek world, but not in a New BSG world.

Thanks VF, I might have to try and see if I can hunt it down and watch it sometime.

I guess I looked at new BSG as more a statement of who we are rather than who we could be, which is more what Star Trek was about. I didn't see all the characters as depraved, rather they are all seriously flawed, yet they have to come together otherwise they would be eradicated by the cyclons. But yeah, a part of you is rooting for the Cylons in new BSG.

Agreed. I loved the original BSG. NuBSG wasn't my cup of tea at all. Plus the old show had John Colicos. Gotta love that guy.

Gotta love Count Iblis as well.... pure evil.... John Colicos was awesome as Baltar....totally agree.

Always wished we would have gotten a second season of Galactica.... we could have learned more about the light beings and the Count and the true fate of the Pegasus.

Yes, Battlestar Galactica had so many interesting things going on that a second season would have shed some light on had it been done.

I was raised on the sci fi of the 50s-80s when I was younger and I absolutely loved BSG, I used to watch it (along with many other shows) with my grandfather. I like both incarnations of BSG, but I tend to lean more towards the classic show in certain aspects. Thanks for this info VF, I'm gonna have to look for this release.

The original BSG will always be one of my all time favorite shows. I grew up watching it (that and Buck Rogers). It was what made me fall in love with Sci Fi even more so than Star Trek which I grew up watching reruns of as well. The vipers were the coolest ships I had ever seen. I still go back and watch my favorite episodes from time to time.

They are $4.95. I picked up two of the three they had on the shelf.
