Some new pics & a great video interview with Dr. Mego over at the MegoMuseum about the upcoming Retro items

Scroll to the bottom of the page for more pictures of the new figures.
Interesting Paramount asked them to make changes to Vina so she better resembled Susan Oliver, but when it came to Chapel they had to alter her features so she looked less like Majel!
Original proto next to re-worked proto:
She is certainly beautiful now, though less Majel looking IMO.
They requested a lot of changes to Vina including her face, hair colour & length as well as her outfit.
Move over 'Crazy Hair Crusher'...Vina's taking your title!
I will not get my hopes up that we will see further assortments (they have to get these four figures out first!) but I would certainly love to see a few more characters added...such as Yoeman Rand who was mentioned by NewForce Rick in the past.

It might explain why the Playmates Chapel figures didn't feature her angular face. Though the Lwaxana figure was really good.

My opinion of the Mattel Superheroes line is that they shouldnt even call it Retro. Yes its retro because its similar to the Mego style, but Mattel opted to recreate the Superhero figures and not rerelease the original Mego Superheroes line. I would have been all over a Original Mego superhero line, but after i bought a Superman when they first released, i lost interest in them when they were so far removed from Megos and the figure bodies are so cheap. I have seen several of the releases at my LCB shop and while Mattel seemed to put out new figures that Mego didnt, its still not enough to lure me into buying that line. I think Mattel alienated older collectors who would have liked an original mego line, and younger collectors who may not be interested in a clothed superhero line that is'nt super detailed and articulated like most of todays figures are. Star Trek's retro line was a rerelease of the original line along with a few new entries. Yes, the gorn was updated, but that was a welcome change but i still wouldnt mind having the original mego Gorn to compliment my collection. I hope that DST will continue to release these, and i wouldnt mind having a set of the 2009 Star Trek figures in Mego form, as well as some TNG figures.

Dr. Mego sure has put a lot of work into these figures. He commented on the DC line ending over at Mattycollector:
"I would like to thank everyone for their support of the Retro
Action line. It has been a labor of love for us, and I hope
the remaining completed figures (I will not say who they are)
could be produced and sold through mattycollector.com
The people we worked with at Mattel have all been terrific
and very knowledgeable about DC Comics and megos - something
you don't often find in a toy company.

What a kick in the teeth it will be for him if DST cancel Chapel & Vina. He's sculpted them, re-worked them, re-re-worked them...& possibly for nothing.
But, such is life in this business.

I'm going to get a chapel just because it might be the only one we get from DST, but I'm passing on these two.

I would skip Pike, but I really want to support the line till we see Chapel/Vina.
Ofcourse I will be happier having Pike if we actually get Vina.

"CBS gave us such a hard time with Vina's costume that I started to think they
did not want to see it made. It pains me to say it, but lots of retailers have
been offered Rand and Chapel two-packs but no one has the money to go
for it in quantity - and it's not worth it for DST to make a small number.
Diamond has been trying to get some of the larger retailers to take them
as exclusives but no one wants them enough to put their money up."
**
"No interest has been expressed - if we can't get retailers to take a
chance on Nurse Chapel or the Orion Slave Girl - I don't see how
Spock's mom and dad would make it.
When Playmates did the 5 inch they had a long relationship with
their factory and was able to get very small runs done to satisfy
fan requests.
Since a lot of factories in China have shut down over having to
pay for safety certification after the lead paint scandal - the ones
that survived are not willing to do small runs."
**
"My hope is that now that DST is making Bride of Frankenstein and as the economy
improves, we may be able to re-visit putting Chapel, Rand, and Vina in a future
assortment. As long as DST has the Trek license, it's possible - not a certainty -
but considering how much of a long shot this whole thing has been over the past
6 years, I refuse to give up hope."
**
"Retailers were not willing to commit to the women so DST put the two
stronger characters - Pike and the Salt Vampire - together. Even those
were not big sellers, given that most retailers were cautious about
buying non-returnable merchandise in a bad economy."
