I think there being very cautious which may not be a bad thing - sure, it annoys the hell out of all of us, just look back at this topic for the rants (mostly from me! tongue.gif). Thinking about it though, If DST are serious about sustaining the license and doing what they can then taking it one step at a time might benefit the line in the long run but it is that fragile balance between spoon-feeding items to fans and running the risk of loosing the fan-base, or going all out and damaging the company, having to lay people off and still loosing the fans because of the reduction in quality.

The main thing remains, DST needs to improve on it's quality - limiting their product out for release or slowing down the production on Star Trek items will hopefully improve the attention to detail and the quality of the finished product because they will have less to work on. I think at the moment the trouble is that the product isn't there and when it is, it's dogged with quality control issues.

On a side note though, looking towards the future of the franchises toy license, I keep hearing rumours that Hasbro are lining up to take it on for the 2012 movie... a Hasbro produced Star Trek Mr Potato Head is coming soon and normally they are attached to a larger line of toys (with exception to Toy Story for obvious reasons) so there may be more truth to the rumour than I assumed??? If they do, I guess it's going to be the new movie(s) as their primary focus. What I'm getting at is that having Hasbro onboard may bump interest in DST's line?

Lets hypothetically assume that Hasbro does get the 2012 movie line....I highly doubt they would want any other company distributing toys alongside their with such a risky line. I think Playmates was a small enough company to not make demnds but Hasbro is in no such position. If they get this line, I can pretty much assure you DST wont be allowed to ride the coattails and possibly detract from Hasbros bottom line.

I think both could run a line simultaneously. Hasbro and DST both had stuff going for Iron Man, X-Men and all the Marvel comics stuff. DST was also allowed to do a few Star Wars figures in 19". I might add that DST andMattel both produce product for Ghostbusters. I don't think Hasbro has any fears of being upstaged by a smaller company. If Hasbro had any fears they would probably just buy all of DST's assets outright.

I dont think Hasbro would be worried, I think their line, if they are to have the license will be primarily based on current Star Trek toys rather than doing stuff based on TOS or TNG. as bgiles say's, Hasbro and DST both have marvel licenses and both do solid business - they are simply not in competition and this is what I think DST should understand - Hasbro produce mass marketed toys to kids, DST should be producing higher quality toys to specialist shops for older kids (meaning, anyone over the age of 15).

Besides, Hasbro are unlikely to release any toys based on the TV shows and movies that kids aren't familiar with. Unless a potential Star Trek 2012 line is hugely successful, Hasbo will probably leave the classics well alone and let DST continue to do their thing, whatever their thing may be.

What I mean though is you wont see the two lines side by side at any major retailer. With 2009 Trek you saw specifically at TRU playmates stuff and DST stuff. That wont happen this time around. Ive never seen any Marvel select stuff side by side with Hasbro stuff at major retailers. For us the only new stuff we got came from the TRU deal and Im pretty sure that wont fly again.

Here in the UK, no one knows of DST unless they go to stores like FP but regardless, Thats a very VERY good thing. In TRU, Star Trek needs to be brought to the masses by one company and one company in particular to build up the excitement - people buy hasbro just because its Hasbro - So a line that sits next to the Star Wars line that matches it in scale and quality would be a dream come true for the people making money off of Star Trek. Kids will easily identify with the line. DST should also stop dreaming about getting Star Trek into big chains, stick to the specialist stores where fans of the original Star Trek's go.

I think Chuck misunderstood part of my Retro line comment in the latest Q&A:
http://toynewsi.com/...68&itemid=16960

Me: "Pike is very nice too. Love the new shirt. If you ever feel like making someone to keep him company, please consider Majel Barrett as Number 1. The original First Officer hasn't quite made it into toy assortments before."

Chuck - "Sam I think we'll take it one wave at a time now with the Trek retro line but I have to say I don't think we've ever discussed Majel for any of our lines - maybe we should have"

It seems he thought I was saying I wanted an actual Majel Barret figure!! laugh.gif

It might also mean that theres never been any discussion on adding Number One to any lines. I guess with the increased tooling ovolved maybe it just never came up as a viable option for the action figures. Really, the pilot episode figures really started coming at the end and it would make sense that she was nvere an option given the success of the overall line.

It was the comment "We never discussed Majel for any of our lines" that caught my attention, since obviously they have made her as Nurse Chapel in Minimates, Retro & the cancelled TOS series 5 figure.

Since most of my post to him was huge praise, I gather he is just a bit defensive with their Trek line these days. I do not blame him.

Actually, defensive isn't really the word...he just doesn't want us getting our hopes up.

And you could be right, maybe he was talking about the Number 1 character.

Geesh, here is why these multiple topics are a pain in the donkey. I replied to this very thing, in the same manner as seen here, because someone posted a link to the Q&A on the ToyFair '11 topic.
Clearly I read the link, including Sam's question, and replied THERE.
Basically I stated that he must have been thinking of Number One, but did not realize she was the same person...

From jedigreedo:

It'll be interesting to see if they really do get out this year.

DSTChuck: Rick, we are working on the B and a Klingon BOP, we do hope they will be in stores in 2011. We are not going to give out a ship date until we have a working sample that we like from the factory, to best ensure the date we give will be as accurate as possible. As for the UK all I can say is we do have a distributor there so please be sure to tell your retailer to let his supplier know about his interest in the Trek ships!

I had to disengage the "Cloaking Device" to understand the Hasbro talk FHC! tongue.gif

Anyhow, back on topic, as pointed out above, DST is still working on the Ships and Tek... and they are trying to get something out this year!
