Wow. Nothing like an exclusive to bring out the nuts. Lol. It's not like they are making an Akira or Oberth or steam runner. Or something no one has a version of. It's a repaint of a ship that they are already making two other versions of. A lot of people complain about the battle damaged stuff anyway. Going to a convention and being able to get something exclusive is part of the fun of going. Life is to short to get so worked up over something as silly as not being able to get a toy.

LOL! Some people are completists, some aren't. Plain and simple. I won't call'em nuts because of it,lol, but I will always comment on it,and especially on how the companies handle the whole exclusive thing. Some have it down perfectly, others just don't,and therefore you get the f*****g scalping. I know you'll always have scalpers of course. And THAT I hate. Plain and simple. And it's not likely to change any time soon. Therefore I choose not to get these repaints and repacks and whatever. There's just so much more out there that I can spend that money on. Of course, since I am blessed with my short attention span, lol,I can get a huge variety of things, not just Trek. It LOOKS really cool, having just Trek stuff on display and collecting just that,it's just not for me and I accepted that YEARS ago.

So,moving on to other stuff,NON exclusive stuff, lol! Let's see......Six Million Dollar Man? Galaxy Quest? Greatest American Hero? Star Wars? Knight Rider again? lol! Last Starfighter? Spidey, again? Simpsons? Thunderbirds? Space 1999? 60's Batman? Starman? Blade Runner? Back to the Future? Small Soldiers? Rocketeer? Peanuts? Actually,I was into all this over the weekend, lol! There's just SO much out there and like JMW says,no need to get worked up over a toy, even though I do at the same time understand it from a completist point of view.

Good luck trying to get this one at the con, whoever's going. I know I'm going, but I don't need any luck for something I'm not trying to get, lol! I'm just there for the fun.

I have my Star Trek VI Excelsior. That's the definitive version for me. I won't lose any sleep not getting the exclusive.

For me it is like badbunnymike says, I'm a completist, as far as I know I've got everything trek DST has released over the years (includign most of the box variants, I did stop recently though with the ship rereleases as I'm running low on space). but the fun of collecting these is slowly decreasing for me, especially with con exclusive that are only there for scalpers and for no one else, so for a company that says its there for collectors I'm bitterly disapointed they go for the exclusive route again without any other way (besides paying the scalpers) to get it for those of us who live on the other side of the world.....

I'm gonna be blunt on how I feel about exclusives and then I'll be done with it, I don't feel like debating this again like I did last year.

I understand you guys are conpletionists, and that's awesome if that's your thing. But getting mad at manufacturers over making these barely different exclusives just seems stupid.

Pretty much every company does this, and it's to give the people who pay hundreds of dollars to go to these things something cool that you can only get by going. Some companies handle exclusives better then others, I like to think DST will handle things differently this year but don't expect them to.

If you're that desperate to get everything a company releases then you can either pay the money to go to the con, and risk not getting one, or spend probably less money then going, and get one off eBay or some other website. This ship probably won't be more then $150 just like the BoP last year ended up being.

I hate scalpers as much as you guys do but the only reason they do it is because people pay them for the stuff they sell. If they couldn't make money on it then they would stop doing it. As long as collectors are willing to shell out big bucks for stuff they cant find elsewhere it will keep happening. I guarantee that if no one bought one of these ships on ebay and just let it sit the price would drop drastically. As collectors we are our own worst enemies. Completists are even worse because its something they have to have no matter what, so they will eventually cave and pay some crazy price. Its a vicious circle that no one will ever win except the people that find a hard to get item first.

Hence my original post that I'm considering just dropping DST from my list of companies I collect, as that would ensure that the scalpers get less and less and then (hopefully) in time DST will see the light and ensure that every item is available foir everyone.

As for goign to the con, that is a nice option IF you live in the US, fo us on this sinde of the ocean that is not really an option.

Now I wouldn't agree with the part about making them available to everyone, that kind of defeats the purpose of an Exclusive, but such small runs are kind of a pain in the ass and scalper fodder for sure. like a run of 300 - 500 is cool, that will ensure that more people can get them, but last year with the 200 ship run of the BoP they were sold out Preview night, which I don't agree with. I think they should have atleast started selling them on a day when the GENERAL public can get in and not just the scalpers that can get into preview night.

I know this will bring forth the answer of, 'well they would have to do it for every toy forum', but this place seems to be the premier Star Trek toy site on the net, especially for Art Asylum/Diamond Select Star Trek items. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong (bearing in mind I said 'toy', not model). With that said, I do have to wonder why some of these exclusives can't be made available to members here who want one of them, even if it was an agreed maximum number - say 10 - and it was a first come, first serve basis?

This Excelsior variant is something that I REALLY would not want. I don't collect the battle-damaged ships for a start, and with no new sounds or lights, I wouldn't see the point. Therefore, I'd describe it as perfect for being a one-off comic con item.

Data, are you a Star Trek fan, or just a toy collector? If it's the former, I'd find your decision to stop collecting the ships in future, especially new ones, hard to understand to be honest. If it's the latter, then surely the 'chase' of that rare item is what gives you the thrill/joy of eventually owning it?

Anyone who wants to can go to Comic Con,not just IF you live in the US. The option IS there. I go every year and have done for 16 years now. I go as long as it's fun. The day it stops being fun,I'll go somewhere else.

I used to do exclusives, and they were easier to get back then, but now it's gotten ridiculous,so I just stopped. Not stopping buying the ships from DST though,as long as they're not broken, lol, but won't go into that again now. But I'm just a casual collector so I don't get everything in sight. Not a fan of variants, and DEFO not of exclusives,as I'm sure you all know by now, lol!

They should do 500 of them and sell 100 a day, including Preview Night. A lot of other booths do it that way and it works perfectly. Hallmark usually has 150,175 and 200 a day of each ornament. Yes,I know they're just ornaments, but they still sell out within two hours. But at least it gives more people a chance to get what they want. And this years Wampa orny looks great btw. The other two,Batman and War Machine look ok,but not something I desperately want. Hascrap has become WAY too much of a hassle to try and buy stuff from,so I don't bother. Mattel....I sometimes give it a shot, but they sell out stuff pretty fast too. The rest are easy peasy, just have to be prepared to line up for a while at some booths. And it looks like DST was easy too,at least for that one scalper that got everything last year,LOL!

I really do hope DST will save some of this exclusive ship till the day AFTER Preview Night this year, not everyone has a ticket for that. This year, like last year,I only got tickets for Thursday and Sunday. Yes,they sell out within the hour. But it's still open to anyone in the WORLD to go. A lot of Brits are flying over,Swedes,Germans,me....lol......Australia,Africa,Japan,so yeah it really is a world event.

I'm just gonna get some other stuff from DST's booth since I'm sure that no matter how early I get there on Thursday morning, they won't have this exclusive, lol!

So Zach - will you have any of the Marvel Select exclusives for sale or do I HAVE to set foot in a bloody Disney store? lol! And maybe some of the REGULAR ships will be for sale?! And why not do a Hallmark and have an amount of the exclusive ship at NYCC as well? That's why Hallmark and a lot of others removed the SDCC logo,so they can sell them at other cons and just call it a con exclusive. I actually miss that little logo on my exclusives, lol! See ya at the con.

Just a quick add on here. I agree with JK about letting people here get the option to buy. Or they COULD do a Mattycollector type thing,pre-order it and pick it up at the con,and I know not everyone here goes to the con,but I do and would happily pick up for anyone who did a pre-order. Hmmmm, picking up a bunch of one item would probably make me look like a scalper,LOL!

The forum option wopuld be something I welcome, and yes of course there is an option to fly over to the US and go to the con just to pick up this item, but at that price (airplane ticket alone will be close to € 1.000) even the scalper prices will look like a penny in comparrison.

Anyways Jay-K in answer to your question I'm all round trek collector (see my site linked below), however I either collect something or I don't and if I collect it I collect to complete it, so if it is impossible to get a complete set of anything I simply will not collect it. (for example Rittenhouse for a short period had the unholly idea to limit an insert set to 25 per card (which would make it (near) impossible to complete the two insert sets (of 110 cards each), I then also commented the same, if those quantities stay the same I will not collect those inserts anymore. (and whith me many other collectors)-> end result Rittenhouse listen and increased the number to 100 cards, still hard to get but possible so I went for it). Chasing the item I know this might not be anyone else vision but for me "The Chase" has little to no appeal, I colelct to have a complete set, the chase itself is just a necessity which I prefer to avoid. (Hence I would pre-order anything), I'm, really just a collector not a chaser.

And I fully concur with BadbunnyMike, as teh 200 of last year sold out on the preview night, why the heck are you decreasing that number, I would expect that (as DST only make the inital sales price as revenue) you would increase the number so you can sell more....

Going to the con to pick up just ONE item seems kinda stupid, does anyone actually do that? lol! You might not even get said item anyways. No,you go to the con to have FUN,pick up the item that they hopefully have, check out all the other booths, look at all the Trek stuff,or Spidey,SW,Lego, whatever the heck you're into, and just enjoy it all! And if you went this year you could even do the BIG Trek con in Vegas, which is the weekend after Comic Con. Not that I'm doing that as I'm not really Trekkin' right now, lol! Make it a vacation, like I do. Every summer I go to the US for a month. Go to places that seem like fun,and if you like Trek there's PLENTY of places to see. I liked Vasquez Rocks myself, been there twice so far. I also liked Bronson Canyon, where all incarnations of Trek has filmed. And you've seen it if you ever watched the good ol' Batman tv show from the 60's. The GORGEOUS Batmobile drives out of the Batcave, which is Bronson Canyon. YES,I've been in the Batcave! So to speak, lol! So do a fun vacation.

And I still stand by whatever I've said about these exclusives,DST Trek or otherwise. I see there are some really nice exclusives around the con,and I seriously doubt I'll be trying to get ANY of them. I would love to get the huge 31" Shadow Stormtrooper, would go nicely with my Darth Vader, lol! And the Hot Wheels Darth Vader looks like fun,so does Hallmarks Wampa orny. Some Spidey and Guardians of the Galaxy stuff looks good, ditto Batman, but I don't really need any of it. It's at times like these I just embrace my short attention span and think,if I'm meant to have this or that,I will have it. LOL! If I REALLY want it,I WOULD of course get it all. Plain and simple. Nothing really is impossible.

But I really do hope DST will take all the comments here into consideration. Some people ARE completists and I totally understand the disappointment and frustration that embodies when trying to get it all. If I collected one thing and suddenly I knew I wouldn't be able to complete it,I would stop collecting that one thing. I don't envy you who are completists, and I've always been happy just getting whatever I like and not feel that.....need.....to have it all. Living in this country there's no WAY I could do that anyways, even with the internet being what it is today and those f*****g scalpers, that I luckily NEVER have to deal with. Yeah, yeah, never say never an'all that, but there are THREE things I will say NEVER to,and that is one of them. lol!

Ok,this post got too long again with ramblings and such, lol! Stopiiiiing......NOW!

It's a minor paint variation. We made fewer because we figured fewer people would want it than the clear BoP, but we still wanted to bring something kinda special to the show. So if you don't want to pay scalper prices, don't pay them. Prices will level off eventually based on how much people actually want it. Clear BoP prices were almost down to SRP after a month or so.

I do feel for completists, as well as UK collectors -- I'm sure collecting from overseas is tough enough even without exclusivity. But I also believe that there are probably fewer than 30 true completists for this line in the world -- everyone else buys just the ships they like, or their favorite version of the Excelsior, or whatnot.

I'll see if I can suggest holding some for Thursday, or further limiting how many someone can buy. We did both for the Clear BoP -- we definitely sold some clear BoPs on Thursday, so whoever missed out must not have been first in line, or got unlucky with their door selection -- but I'll see if we can do more.

Thanks for that Zach! I'll certainly come by the booth and have a looksee. And if you for some weird twisted Twilight Zone moment have any of the exclusive ship still available,I might even pick one of those up,lol! And give it to someone else of course,I still hate exclusives. Last year,if you had any left on Thursday you must've sold out within twenty minutes,'cos even if I wasn't first in line......there was no line of course,lol.....I was there twenty minutes after the doors opened and DST was my first stop. I still blame the f*****g scalpers. lol. See ya at the con Zach!

Oh Zach is totally right on that one! Living overseas and trying to collect this stuff is a darn hassle! Over here,if an order exceeds 30 bucks I get slapped with tax and customs,so I always try and stay below that when ordering. Every time I need more expensive items I order it and ship it to a friend in the US,and then he sends it to me,or I pick it up whenever I'm there. So it's easier for me of course, especially since I go to the US at least four times a year and can do all the shopping I need,or find, when I'm there.

I don't like shopping this stuff in the UK either,as WAY too opften they just think,60 bucks?! Oh yeah,we'll put 60 quid on that. Which is a hell'uva lot more than 60 bucks! I can tell ya THAT much! It's very annoying walking in to a Forbidden Planet or Cinema Store in London and seeing the item you've been looking for at a REALLY stupid price, which just makes me think that I'll get it in the US since it'll be half price there.

So yeah, collecting over here can be a bitch, but whatever item you REALLY want, usually ends up being yours.....in the end, lol!

Yep, prices are honestly terrible over here now (being completely honest). £70-80 for the Excelsior really isn't/wasn't (need to check again soon) on.

There are several solutions to the problem:
