I run a fleet on STO and there is a lot going on in that game. I think another section would a good idea so that members of this forum can ask question without the embarrassment of asking a fleet chat or in zone chat.
Let me tell ya ever since it went free to play the quality of members has gone down and people who ask question that are considered idiotic by the fleet they join or in zone chat will be laughed at or worse till they leave fleet or the area. Its nothing like that in my fleet btw, we help everybody the best we can and most members come to our fleet because other fleets made them feel bad.
It would also be a good place for vets like myself to share tips on what skill specs you should take for the career type you choose. I can mainly help with tactical and a little bit of engineering. also good for ship recommendations etc.
The only down side I could see to adding another portion is that the single STO thread currently on the forum has been dead since the game went free to play. So either people played for a few days and said forget it or didnt even try it. I guess if its not too much trouble go ahead and make another section for it and once its up I can help people with question and etc.

BTW we also have a fleet set up for members of this website called Alpha Quadrant Collectors (thanks to Slayer for the name!!). We also have a universal chat channel (if you know what that means...lol) called Collectors Network. You can join that chat channel and chat ingame even if you dont want to join the fleet.
I personally have about 1-13 characters on STO so I can help out anyone who needs it!

I realize we don't have an STO section, but I couldn't find a more relevant topic to put this in, but it certainly qualifies as STO "news." Startrek.com put up an article earlier in the week stating that an official Mac version of the game is now available. Just to be clear, the article lets it slip that this is almost identical to playing the game through the unofficial Wineskin wrapper some people were previously using. STO is using Transgaming's Cider engine, which is based off of the same code as Cedega/WineX that virtualizes certain elements of Windows allowing Windows games to run on a Mac. It's not truly a native port, but it's official and has support from the developers, which the unofficial Wineskin wrapper does not. If the unofficial Wineskin wrapper is any indication of how the official port will work though, I expect it to be fine. The Sims 3 uses the same tool and runs poorly because the game as a whole was coded poorly. On the other hand, the official Mac version of Sid Meier's Civilization IV is a native Mac Port, and some people will tell you that they've had a better experience running the Windows versions through a Wineskin wrapper on more modern machines given the game's age, and the fact that the native Mac version was coded in such a way that certain mods wouldn't run on it. STO has been running through Wineskin quite well for awhile unofficially, and Cider is very similar, so. I was personally hoping to finally try STO soon, but the graphics card in my Mac Mini is unsupported because of the machine's age, and I try to keep my gaming to a minimum on the machine I use for media related tasks since "RAW" photos and huge video files eat space the way Tribbles eat grain.

I have to wonder if MMORPG's aren't missing revenue stream opportunities by not embracing iOS or Android? Mobile computing seems to be the path most things are on these days.
As to games like Civilization... I really liked Civ II, but have felt the game play has suffered a downward trend ever since. Many of the enhancements actually removed features I thought worked well. I'm always looking for a good turn based game for my Mac.

I find iOS and Android games to be very watered down in comparison to console or cpu games. Theres no way that a mini touch screen could encapsulate what goes on in a game like STO. However, STO is beginning to offer certain elements of the game through a link that is formatted for iOS and Android. Its pretty simplistic but I can access all my characters and do some limited stuff with each via my iPhone. I think thats the real way to go...have a full version on the cpu and then have some functions available on the phone to keep people connected when they arent at the cpu.

I would prefer them go to IOS or have and IOS version of this game. I would play it then. I tried on PC but couldn't get into. Just becuase it is on IOS doesnt always mean watered down. The Justice League Gods Among Us game is just as fun on IOS as it is on console. It can be done.

Tried Online a few years ago - actually got invited into the private beta, thanks to a friend who works for Rockstar (guys who make GTA) - and didn't like it at all. Going down the World of Warcraft route (a game I played and thoroughly enjoyed for about six months) just wasn't right for Star Trek. The main thing that put me off however, was the art direction. Before the game came out, I remember seeing some gorgeous, and very realistic-looking Galaxy class interiors, as well as some ship art from John Eaves (I believe...) showing off an Akira-class that looked amazing, almost as good as the TV CG. Seeing it in-game now, as with all the federation ships, they just look way, way off:
My hopes for getting to play a nice Star Trek game, now rest solely on the fan-made Excalibur.

Just started playing, very confusing for old ppl LOL, like all pc games more is better(ram, video card etc.)if you want better looking star ships. Like the space combat, ground missions pretty lame (run to spot though map to finnish run all way back) can spend some $ if you want, Too much stuff to learn, but will play

As usual, Jay K and I are in complete accord.
When Cryptic games took over the reigns of development from Perpetual Entertainment, the MMO I had been waiting for died in the womb. In its place, the anime-styled, disproportionately-interior'd, lazily textured mess that STO now is. What a pity!
EDIT:
What STO could have been:
Not perfect, but a stark contrast to the monstrosity in Jay's post.
And look, interiors made for people, not giants!
Though you can sense the veneer and attention to detail just slightly slipping in some of the later shots:
... and by the time Perpetual's version was cancelled, it was already looking almost as ridiculous as the final Cryptic STO:
My source, as usual, is Memory Alpha.

^They're the shots I was trying to find! Man, seeing how the Akira changed so dramatically still gets me down. I was willing to buy a new PC at the time, just for this.
I really hope Excalibur can pull through in future. Some of the videos on their youtube get me so excited.

I know the head programmer on the Excalibur project, if anyone can see it through, he can.

I can't wait until Excalibur comes out. Once it does, goodbye STO.
