Say WHAT?!? Gee, Cap'n Phil, I'll just have to respectfully disagree with that one. ST5 didn't flop because it lacked "The Glitz Factor". It flopped because it totally sucked, in most people's opinion (including mine). Better FX would have certainly helped, but it would have just been a different level of suckiness. To each his own.

As for the new movie, I have moved my review to the other movie thread.

Star Trek V had a great premise but was horribly written and directed NOT to mention the special effects. The special effects were cheap looking and needless to say I don't think that SFX house has done much since.

It bit it's own hand (a no no in film making). You don't make fun of your self. Think Gremlins II, you never go Gremlins II on a movie. This is where you take all that made the first movie unique and make fun of it. Star Trek V had Scotty banging into bulkheads, Kirk sitting on a toilet like he's taking a crap, characters acting completely out of character .A completely uninteresting actor playing "the villian" in Sybock.

The effects house was some kind of industrial animation company that did stuff for NASA and corporations and such. They weren't used to doing movies and the lack of creativity and aesthetic sensibility shows. Shatner used them because he wanted to try for a more realistic take on space and alien environments.

I remember reading an interview with the head of that SFX house and I remember being a 14 year old and feeling like "wow this guy is kind of arrogant". He was talking about how they do things is so much better than ILM, etc etc. Then I saw the movie and I thought "well that sucks".

It's been awhile so I may be off but I thought that ILM was working on some other movie and Shatner was put off at the price ILM was asking and that Star Trek wasn't the priority and bailed for the other company. Like I said I could not be remembering things right though.

Ok, second time around for me and the movie tonight and I have to say I liked more this time. I still have hang ups with Saldana, the shaky camera, and the cluttered action scenes, but the rest just keeps growing on me.

We went to a 4:30 showing at the IMAX in Austin, TX and it was packed out. The attendant making announcements at the beginning of the show stated that the next show was sold out as well.

Its still going strong here in TX.

You lose me a bit with these two posts...on the one hand it sounds like you are acknowledging that TOS was usually about deeper meanings or philosophical questions, when you say that ST:V was your favorite movie because it provided that. But then earlier you said that this new movie, which you openly acknowledge is devoid of such depth, is "what Star Trek was meant to be"... How is this not completely contradictory?

When with "deeper meaning" and "philosophical questions" you mean "what if" kind of questions, yes Star Trek has always had that.
But if with "deeper meaning" and "philosophical questions" you mean questioning 40 minutes long if you should go in with your phaser on stun or rather on kill and argumenting of the ethics of setting your phaser on kill (why does it even have that position, other than for dramatic reasons) untill everybody gets green in the face, then I say no. That has only been a (best forgotten) part of Star Trek since TNG.

I have to disagree with you Bernsy. I found TNG to be very stimulating and enjoyable, as did many millions of others. It and DS9 are my top favorites of all 5 series (I never saw the animated series).

Yeah, and let me go as far as saying you should go back and rewatch some of TOS Berns smile.gif This is something that's always been the question, since the inception of Star Trek. I've yet to go and see the movie for a second or even a third time, mainly because of scheduling issues and other things landing in my plate at the moment, but I'm still hoping to catch it at a IMAX theater soon. I'm sure I'll have just as much fun with it, as I did the first time though. As I've said over several weeks, this magic was one of the reasons I played Star Trek on the playground as a child. It wasn't until I got a little older that I realized there was a message in every episode, from TOS-Enterprise wink.gif

I wish i could have made it to an IMAX screening, but the nearest one was too far away. Maybe another time if they run it on IMAX again. I actually did go and see it today for the third time. I think i like it more every time i see it. See i have gotten aquainted with the persons playing the characters now, i can now sit back and pay more attention to the details of whats going on in the scene and try to pick up on things i missed before. I hope that when the DVD/Bluray comes out, there will be additional footage, maybe an extended version to explain somethings a little more fully. Cant wait for it to come out!

For IMAX viewing I suggest sitting as far back in the theater as possible. There were times that stuff was going on onscreen on opposite sides and it was difficult to take everything in when up front. The complete scope of the movie is so much bigger in IMAX - which I know is silly to say, but it was my first movie in that format.

The sound was absolutely amazing!

Yes, there's a message against bigotry in Balance of Terror. And it's a very important part. But it gets about 10 minutes of screen time. The game of cat and mouse with the Romulan vesseltakes 40 minutes of time.

Yes, there's a message about humans playing god in TWOK. McCoy has a conversation about it with Spock. But it doesn't even take 5 minutes of screen time.

Bottom line, the messages in TOS were subtile.

Now compare with TNG. In Justice the message takes about 35 minutes of screen time. The intro to the sittuation about 5 and the action about another 5 minutes.

So I'm not against Star Trek having an important message. It's just the way they bring it.

And this movie has a message too. Three times a Captain sacrefices himself for his ship and crew. The Captain of the Kelvin willingly left his ship knowing he wouldn't return. George Kirk willingly sacreficed his life so his crew could survive. And Pike willinly left the Enterprise presuming he wouldn't survive.

But this only takes little screen time. It's subtile.

I went for my third time last night but I caught the showing in IMAX. Ive never seen a major motion picture in the IMAX format and it was pretty impressive! Whereas in my second viewing I becam e a little ansty, this time I was captivated the whole time. The story after multiple viewing really hits a bit harder. I would highly suggest that if at all possible, go see this in IMAX because the number of places still showing it are few and far between!

That was nicely done!

The biggest casualty in this whole reimagining is Scotty. He has basically been reduced to the Jar Jar Binks of Trekdom. Once the trusted third in command, the one Kirk gladly left the keys to the ship as he and Spock and McCoy got into trouble planetside, Scotty is now comic relief. Sure Scotty was always good for a laugh with too much scotch, but this is Montgomery plain sober, but Scotty in the past was one of the wisest, one of the best military tacticians Kirk had. Now sadly he is the court jester, the buffoon, not the rock that kept the Enterprise the finest ship in the fleet. For this I am saddest.

Hey all,

I do agree with this, however I also think he wasn't given enough screen time. Maybe in the second one, these traits will come out.

Take care,

Thats a pretty harsh assessment being how little he was on the screen. I couldnt disagree with you more. Scott's character on TOS especially in the first season was just downright boring and really didnt have much impact. His personailty really came out in the TOS movies and thats the Scotty that most people love today. The great thing I think this movie is able to do is skip all the fleshing out of the characters that we saw in TOS (I just got done watching TOS season 1 and I was far from impressed by most of it) and move right into all the character traits that we know and love. I thought this new Scotty was perfectly done because it captured what I thought Scotty should be even if it was slightly over the top at very few times.
