There's been a lot of doom and gloom involving DST's future recently, no small part thanks to me I'm sure but I hope the following can be a topic that celebrates DST's achievements over the last 4 years at the helm. Since 2006, it seems longer somehow, Diamond Select Toys have continued the legacy begun by Art Asylum back in 2001. Whilst in recent years things have begun to unravel, over their tenure as license holders we have been treated to some of the best Star Trek toys money can buy, so as 2011 may see the sun set on the DST legacy, what Star Trek item or items do you think have been the best?

10 top choices for me:

10) TOS Communicator - Original release. This was an amazing item that included some great gimmicks but also an amazing amount of detail and quality. The best part of this product for me was the gold metal lid.

9) Star Trek: The Next Generation Series 1: Riker & Worf. These figures were just superb. I no longer have them but when they first arrived I was thrilled with the level of quality and detail in each of the figures and the display stand was a huge bonus too!

8) USS Enterprise - E. Begun with Art Asylum and finished off by DST, this as far as I can tell has been the longest we've had to wait for a ship? And whilst the detail lacking was a bit of a shame, the sculpt and the quality were plain to see. Again a ship I no longer own due to a house move, out of everything it was probably the one thing I miss the most from my old collection.

7) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan action figures: This line and how it was done and released should have been a template for all of the future DST figures. It was done with such dedication and such quality that I don't think DST have really released another series of action figures like it across all of their licenses. The detail and the choice in characters was just right. If I have anything bad to say about it is that it didn't last longer and wasn't the template for future figure lines. A crying shame.

6) TOS Tricorder. A wonderful prop that had everything the communicator had.

5) Amok Time Kirk & Spock 2 pack. It was such a shame that DST didn't see the sales to justify re-releasing the entire TOS crew with the hard torsos because it would have been fantastic just as this set was. An iconic moment in Trek history recaptured in 7 inch glory. Fantastic detailing, build with quality and a great example of how to accessories action figures with just the right amount of things.

4) Odo. This figure is slightly bittersweet for me as it represents a "what could have been" moment. Odo was beautifully done, fantastic likeness and really well detailed and made with some quality. It was such a shame albeit understandable, that the other figures didn't evoke the same kind of warm fuzzy feeling I get when I've opened a new action figure. Alas DS9 didn't really take off and Odo will remain the single best figure for me in the DS9 range just for it's quality and unique look opposed to the starfleet uniforms.

3) Star Trek: The Motion Picture phaser. I would assume that the WoK phaser is just as good but I chose TMP version because of the coloured lights on top - I love this phaser and whilst the grey plastic might be quite dull, the lighting and sound effects are fantastic.

2) Mego Action figures. Whilst not entirely DST's work, DST were hugely involved with these great figures. I particularly liked the Romulan because I've always loved their helmets! never the less, they were just as good as one another in terms of replicating that iconic retro look that as a result of Star Trek's Retro line, every other toy line seems to be getting one.

1) My ALL TIME best DST product, although I couldn't really put a hair between all 10 of these items, has to be the DST Locutus of Borg figure - I love the Borg and will buy anything Borg related and to have probably the most iconic of Borg, even above the Borg Queen herself, well it's special.

What are yours?

Say whatever you want to about the TNG waves, especially the latter waves, as far as quality control and so forth...
But, nobody can deny that we got some really cool accessories even through the last waves (though they did cheapen up a bit, too). Far cooler than ever before under Art Asylum, IMO. Trombones, chocolate sundaes, Janaran Falls phaser etchings, Ressikan flutes, duffel bags, engineering "briefcases", miniature Enterprise-Ds, cats, violins, Borg Queen spinal cords... Same can be said for DS9. Phasers/communicators/tricorders are great and all, but it's these personal items that remind us why we loved the characters or take us back to our favorite episodes that really made me want & love the figures. In fact I may never have gotten into collecting these at all had it not been for Thomas Riker w/trombone -- I thought it would be a cool crossover curio since in addition to being a Trekkie I also play the trombone, and the surprising quality of the figure roped me into completism in the end.

I've got a pile of tribbles, from all kinds of vendors, and whirlygig, I agree completely, all the accessories really did make a difference.

If I only look at what DST did, and separate them from what AA did previously, I'm going to say the TWOK line, as a whole, was really well done!

Singly, the best of the best ( in no order) I think would be,

TNG Riker
TNG Worf
TNG Geordi
ODO
Gowron
Martok
Spock / Kirk The voyage home 2-pack
Troi (Season 7)
Ezri Dax

I think the TOS comm and TMP phaser are the best tek they've done.

Just to toss this out there. The TOS Com was a remake of the one from the Star Trek Experience which was a cheaper version of the Master Replicas one.

your correct FHC! So really then I have to give the nod to the TMP/TWOK phaser as the best DST designed role play.

My favorite is burned and defeated Khan. A figure I never thought I'd see! "I spit my last breath at thee..." Now if only we could get the Reliant!

The TWOK figures and the TWoK Enterprise are easily tops for me. I loved the TMP Kirk and Spock as I have such a soft spot for the movie but I am disappointed that they didn't do 2-packs for all the crew. I love it when they do supporting characters, especially Ro, Marlena, Terrell, Vina but there were so many it would have been fun to see (Rand & Chapel (stop taunting us), Kevin Reilly, Decker & Ilia to name a few). The Tribble is great and the Trek Tech is great, although it's hard to pick a favourite.

Hmm...I'd have to say my top 10 specifically DST Trek Figures are:

Ro
Odo
Ezri
Martok
Command Chair Picard
Locutus
Gowron
Lore
TWOK - Entire Line
Kang (I know only the head is new, technically...but still)

Okay...so it's not a list that's very different than everyone elses, but that's okay. If you add AA to this list, I have to applaud the Enterprise figures. They're probably the best part of the series. I also appreciate the Mirror, Mirror TOS figures, even though the only one I have is Marlena Moreau. They were very well done i just didn't have the money/space for them. (Oh, and I would have added Dukat and Seven of Nine had they been produced)

If we include AA I'm tossing my hat in for the Borg: Assimilation line - I think those are just some really really really beautiful figures.

Of the more recent releases, my favourites are the Captain's Chair Picard and the Battle Damaged Khan. I think they're both excellent examples of what a difference paint application can make. They may have the same head sculpts as the regular Picard and Khan figures, but I think the paint makes them look vastly superior and much more like the actors they're based on than previous releases. I'm especially pleased with Picard, who I for the longest time swore was a new head sculpt because the paint had me convinced. I would consider the latest Kirk release one of the best too if it just had better paint application.

I agree that the best thing about DST's work has been the accessories. As the kind of Star Trek fan who loves to obsess over little details, those things delighted me immensely. Having accessories like Data's violin, the Borg Queen's skull, Picard's phaser rifle from "Star Trek: First Contact", his flute, and Sisko's baseball always makes me smile with nostalgia for the movie and TV memories they bring back. While a lot of DST's work impressed me, I believe the best of the line was before its time, with Art Asylum's marvelously life-like McCoy sculpt, and of course the masterpiece in my avatar, which inspired me to start collecting Star Trek figures in the first place. wub.gif

Hmm... I'm going to include the Art Asylum line here since it's really one giant line, but here are my top 10 DST releases:

10. The NX-01: Nobody else has made a toy of it, it was Art Asylum's first ship, and nobody else will likely make a toy of it again, at least not for some time. It wasn't perfect, and it was a tad small, but it was a step above Playmates in terms of general detail.

9. U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A: Again, it had never been released before, and likely won't be released by another toy company again; it was a risky move that paid off though, and it gave us the awesome, albeit incorrectly packaged BD 1701 from "The Search for Spock" in TWOK packaging. Show me an Enterprise-C and it'll easily make this list.

8. Phasers: Yes, DST milked them for all their worth, but a DST Phaser just wreaks of awesomeness. The variants were cool, although I'm missing at least one (possibly two,) but topping the awesome TOS Phaser are the TMP and TWOK Phasers, each of which proves that DST isn't a one-trick horse for Tek.

7. The Trials and Tribbleations line: Yes, this was really a TOS line in disguise, but as the first DS9 line, it was Art Asylum's first step into 24th Century Trek.

6. Captain's Chairs: Any figure that's included a captain's chair; my only regret is that the Sisko+Command Chair was supposedly canceled; I really wish DST would figure out a way to justify production of this particular figure since it seems to be one of the most common requests for a figure that didn't make it out. The other figures with Chairs were awesome as well, now if only we could get a complete bridge Playset.

5. TOS Communicator: No, it wasn't an original sculpt, but the level of detail for the toy itself is noteworthy. The EE Exclusive with the 9th Phrase was well worth the money too.

4. Riker: Both William and Thomas; the Trombone was a nice touch too.

3. First Contact Picard: Nemesis Picard was nice, as was the standard duty uniform, but FC Picard w/Phaser Rifle and Command Vest just screamed "COOL!"

2. U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D: And it's AGT variant; two words here folks: saucer separation. Do I even need to go further into detail as to why this was an excellent toy?

1. U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E: Yes, it has its flaws, but even with those flaws, this was an amazing release. The upcoming 2011 version looks to fix at least some of the ship's flaws, and compared to the previous two Playmates releases that couldn't even get the shape right, this release would've been fine even if DST painted it entirely in hot pink. The sculpt is accurate, the sounds are awesome, and this was the first ship that DST really had a hand in at every level. I was tempted to knock this down to number two, until I remembered that DST hadn't handled ships before. Besides, the fact that DST is trying to fix the errors from the initial design make this ship worthy of first place.

I agree that the Riker and Worf figures were incredible. The likenesses were dead on! The sculpts of some of the later figures weren't quite up to par with Riker/Worf, which makes me wonder if they were sculpted by someone else. I'd also say that the TOS Spock with rubber shirt is just about perfect.

I don't have many of the ships, but I was really impressed by the Enterprise D. Even without neck windows it's amazing.
