While researching some new stuff I'm working on, I stumbled across the portfolio of artist Ryan Davis. It would appear that he was a designer for Playmates Toys in the late 2000's and worked on Star Trek, among other projects. There are some concept designs for the Bridge and Transporter Room playsets that differ quite a bit from the toys as produced, and the first pictures of the Galactic Heroes/Superhero Squad style "Starfleet Defenders" toys I've ever seen.

But seriously...How freaking cool would these playsets have been!? SOOOO much better than what Playmates actually made!

I've emailed him asking to see more of the designs he may have worked on, or to chat about the design process if he's interested. No response yet. Think it's okay to post these here? If not, I'll delete...

In either case, his website and more design work is available here...

Absolutely brilliant designs, just goes to show how Playmates didn't have a clue what we'd want. So reminds me of the TNG bridge play set.

I think Playmates missed an opportunity to build on their 90's line with a range of action figures, playsets and ships in scale and the style of their 90's classic range. They've done the same with TNMNT so why didn't they do the same with Star Trek.

Forget the 6 inch line and the bridge dome button for the Enterprise - 4 inch figures like their TNG/DS9/VOY/TOS 90's figures (all be it modernised for today's kids), Individual buttons for each of the sounds on the Enterprise and a larger Enterprise at that. Include their trade-mark Simpsons and Family Guy voice tech on select 4 inch figures that could work with the Bridge, Transporter room and other playsets.

For a new fan, kids can re-create the 2009 movie

For older fans who began collecting Star Trek with Playmate's 90's offerings, they continue the collection that is as near identical to their 90's range all be it better articulated and sculpted (although I always thought that the articulation and sculpt's were awesome for 90's toys).

Then they could have gone back and remade their classic lines and ships from TNG, TOS and DS9/VOY

But what will be will be.

This makes me absolutely sick, seeing what could have been. If Playmates Toys would have gone back to that 4.5" scale and did these play sets I think they very much would have had a hit on their hands. It's sad to think that we may never see a line like the 1990's Playmates run again.

Stuff like this always brings a tear to my eye. And not in the good way. That would've been amazing to have instead of the unfinished mat that we got.

But it is interesting to see what features made it from design to finished product.

Now THAT's more like it! This would've been excellent! Instead we get a frickin' plastic table cloth and an unfinished bridge! Oh well, always fun to see what could'a,should'a,would'a been done. Hope the company who holds the license now will see this and actually think!

You can get the 3.75 figures from Poundland here in UK. To think when they came out they were nearly £10 EACH.

That bridge design is awesome. Ten times better than the version we got.

Did the Kelvin or Narada toys ever get prototyped? Has anyone seen pictures?

Wow.... what the heck was Playmates thinking to not go with these designs....too much cost maybe?....but wow...that would have had better success I imagine.

Hello all,

Sorry to pull up an old thread but I just found these designs for figures that I'm assuming Playmates were going to release and this looks like the best place to put it for now......

http://www.ebay.com/...=p2046732.m1684

This seller also had the 12" Chekov prototype figure that I have never even heard of. I know it was unreleased however I've never seen anyone mention it getting to this stage....

Take care,

Matty-lad
