A few years ago a store opened up in the mall called Lee's Collectibles and they had SO many toys from the 80's! He-Man, Transformers, G.I. Joe... some opened, some loose. But there was a whole wall of Star Trek figures by Playmates. I had pretty much all the ones I wanted, but it was still impressive.

I mis that store. It disappeared one day. One sad, sad day.

I think the Playmates figures worked better for collectablilty, they are smaller, easy to store, easy to display, as much as the AA/DST figures are very good, they are just too big and bulky, for me anyway. Ive spoken to a few people who choose not to buy the newer figures because of their size and they way they are being released.

The vintage factor also has its appeal.

There were a few figures still left undone which would have been nice:

4.5" Ezri
4.5" Kassidy
4.5" S1 Riker
4.5" S1 Beverly
4.5" S1 Troi
4.5" S1 Wesley
4.5" S2 Worf
4.5" grey uniform DS9
4.5" grey uniform Geordi
9" Tasha
9" B'Elanna
9" Kes
9" Neelix
9" Quark
9" Jake
12" Beverly

Plus all the extra characters...Kai Winn, the Wildmans...Weyoun, female Changling etc.

I believe a few of those figures were planned...but never made it out. The 9" Torres is the most mind boggling as she was lined up several times without being released!!

Maybe if the new playmates line picks up, they'll complete the other lines.

if memory serves the voyager figure were only $5. Good luck trying to find that quality of figure for that price!

I hope the new figures will be in that price range.

I had to cross the Canada/U.S. border and raid Upstate New York for most of my Playmates figures! It was always an adventure.

What a story.

I hope not! That would mean DST will no longer have the go ahead to produce all the other Trek and Ill be stuck buying a whiole new line of figures!

As for the Paris figure, that is from the episode where he mutated because he broke the warp barrier (am i getting my episodes confused?). The three little aliens are him fully mutated and Janeway fully mutated i think. The one thing I didnt like about that episode was it kind of but a wall up that suggested starfleet would have a hard time going any faster than it already was without serious consequences.

Close

They turned into mutated people and the 3 "things" were their babies.

I wonder though. Maybe if Playmates could get licensed to do TNG, TOS (series & movies), DS9, VOY and ENT in 3 3/4 then we could have our cake and eat it too! Other companies have shared licences for diferent scales. Just look at Harry Potter - Popco 3 3/4" and NECA 7" or Pirates of the Carribean - Zizzle 3 3/4" and NECA 7". I know Playmates has the 7" scale for the new Star Trek movie but maybe with a little negotiation between all license holders we could all get what we want.( and just maybe DST could give us figures from the new Trek too!)

Im thinking that if there is a demand for a 3 3/4" inch (or if the playmates line of the same scale does well) that DST will probably want to do it themselves. Maybe not though. I just dont think we will be seeing a continuation of the old playmates lines both 4.5 and 9 inch. Even if they did continue it, I would seriously hope that the figures have a different look and probably wouldnt fit in with whta most people currently have. I just think the ship has sailed on the idea of the old playmates stuff coming back. Now if they could work out a deal that gives playmates the ability to do a different scale of TNG etc in an updated way that would be cool. My bottom line is that its nice to be nostalgic for the old playmates stuff but in no way do i want that back on store shelves!

Actually I thought there were plans to do a smaller scale, assumably 3 3/4, I forgot the details.
Basically AA were going to redo some of the already released figures, using the same moulds. There was some mixed reaction when they made this statement, and then I think is when DST took over the license. They were getting another company to do the process, and then I never heard about it again.
Sorry if this turned into a DST subject. I would love to see the new Trek bridge, and if it looks close enough to the real thing, then I am in. I can just view the new casting as the real McCoy

Yeah AA was in negotiations to scale down the figures to 4" with some unamed Japanese company but that all fell through. I have been hoping for years that DST would release in this scale too. Playsets would be practical in this scale. Hopefully it will happen after the new movie!

I know what you mean! I , in no way want to see a return of the old V-Crotch either. I do however remain optimistic! Their (Playmates Toys) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have some pretty nifty ball jointed shoulders and thier leg articulation is cool too. I was definately a fan of thier Simpsons: World of Springfield playsets too. I'd love to see some interactive World of Star Trek playsets and diorama with that voice chip technology applied! Thats why I am so hyped about a new Playmates line!
