Ok so Star Trek is celebrating its 55th in 2021. The franchise had barely a mention for its 50th Anniversary but has since gone on to have a slight rise in presence on peoples televisions and devices thanks to CBSs streaming service. An action figure line was announced by McFarlane Toys and as expected failed to get past the initial wave of two figures. All the while Star Trek has been continuing to add to its legacy and build a diverse audience. Add to that the separation of CBS and Paramount coming to an end as these two companies once again merge back into a single entity.

Is the time for a successful Star Trek Action Figure line back upon us? In a recent Tweet from J. Van Citters, CBS brand manager for Star Trek hinted that 2021 - Star Treks 55th Anniversary would be a great year for those of us wanting to see a return of good things from Star Trek. This tweet was in response to questions about the 90s run of Playmatess Star Trek toyline. In following other similar leads I got a cryptic reply to a question I posed to Super7s Brian Flynn about a possible follow up to Funkos attempt at Star Trek Reaction Figures. He joked that Ive been looking over his shoulder at his homework!

But back to that thought of Super7, their Reaction Figures are 1000 times better than Funkos, that would be a very nice inclusion to Star Treks catalog of product and if Star Trek turns up in the Reaction Line, surely Star Trek Ultimates wouldnt be far behind! Ultimates is a made to order line that so far includes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Thundercats, Conan the Barbarian, The Toxic Crusader and Walt Disney. I would imagine that if enough people were to get behind it we could truly get some awesome figures that we otherwise might not! What does everyone else here think? Im not saying these will by any chance be cheap, but lines backed solely by the fan base seldom are.

I have Super7s Comic Book Conan and it is a most impressive figure. I am currently waiting for the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie versions which I have on preorder. I have been very impressed with their TMNT and Thundercats offerings as well as their latest Reaction Figures. I think Star Trek would thrive with such a line. Im just not sure if Ships and role play would be something they would do.

Personally, I have no interest in overpriced, 5POA figures. I appreciate the enthusiasm of others but I moved past that low standard years ago.

If CBS is pushing for a resurgence in Star Trek merch, honestly what would get me most excited is a continuation of DST's Star Trek Minimates. Offer figures from any show as long as they haven't been done before.

Reaction are 5POA yes. Also, yes they are overpriced. I am primarily interested in how Star Trek would translate as a Super7 Ultimates line. Those carry a heavy price but being they are made to order it might be a way to get fully articulated versions of characters we might not if left to just chance. The heavy price for the Conan the Barbarian figures just some how seem to work for me because just like Star Trek, no company seemed willing to create those either.

I've always been a huge supporter of 1/18 scale figures (since Star Wars figures came out in 1978). For years, thanks to Hasbro, that scale saw many improvements in sculpt, deco, and articulation. Then the mass market figures went back to 20th century engineering while what had become standard suddenly became a premium. After over 40 years, Hasbro priced me out of collecting the line.

If a manufacturer can offer a comprehensive line of Star Trek figures in the 1/18 scale with as much articulation as Minimates, I might be interested if they're affordable. The trick is to get mass market retailers on board with it. Specialty numbers would probably make the figures too pricey for me. That's why I'm happy with a two-pack of Minimates for $9.99 than can quickly and easily be modified into other characters.

I would love 1/18" figures with a bridge playset for TOS and TNG. I'd love 6" scale super articulated figures (ala Marvel Legends/Star Wars black series, utilizing the face printing tech). I'd even take new/more 7" figures so long a s they complete a few crews (TOS, TNG). I'm actually surprised NECA never grabbed the Trek license. If they can do Robocop, Aliens, Back to the Future, Golden Girls and Karate Kid, then a cult classic like TOS seem right up their alley.

I would sincerely hope they would stay away from TOS for the time being. McFarlane's biggest mistake, in my opinion, was not starting with Discovery. And NOW we've got just too many new shows/characters to go back and recycle characters we've done before...at least in looks we've seen before. I'd love to see a 6" or 7" multiverse wave one that would/could include Burnham, T'Kuvma, Picard and Narissa, with a close follow up second wave of Saru, the Ba'ul, Soji and Narek and go from there. The absolute last thing that I want is another TNG Picard or TOS Kirk. If a multiverse line does well, then maybe they can start stretching into 24th Century or TOS/Enterprise. I would love a line like that to go on forever, like the Star Wars Black Series...but it's gotta be bold enough to do some new characters upfront. Though I am curious how they'd handle Lower Decks...would they be animation accurate or would they "humanize" them to fit the other characters?

I'm sure we'll never know. But it's still fun to think about.

I think the main issue is licensing. I don't think the sales would be there for Reaction to spend money on a Trek figure license, because the demand is just not there. If McFarlane couldn't find a way to make it work financially, then I dunno who else would.

Weirdly enough, there are a lot of retro action figure lines in stores right now. The figure aisle looks like something from the 1980s. It's almost an entirely backward-looking toy segment.

It'd be great if CBS could air the first season or two of Discovery in a time slot that's more favorable to a younger demographic. The days of channel-surfing and finding a new show like this seem long gone.

That said, it seems like anyone interested in Trek has already found a way to watch it. Broadcast television has never been kind to this show. It's thrived in alternate forms of distribution.

Well Super7 announced on their Instagram and Twitter page that they will be announcing new licenses starting next Monday. One of those licenses is clearly for Star Trek! Hopefully this will be for both Reaction and Ultimates. Whatever they do its sure to be good.

I'm all for anything that can spur confidence in the franchise at retail. Hopefully success with this line will allow DST to be able to sell in Minimates and other Trek product to the same stores.

I hope Micromachines which was reborn as a license in 2020, will start making Star Trek ships again. I also hope DST will do something again too. Super7 only mention Reaction Figures but I really like Kenner style figures and I was very hopeful for the Galoob line in 1989 to go further than just the first wave! I hope Star Trek Reaction will go on for many years regardless of what may happen with other companies because I will always have a spot for figures similar to the very first that I had - the Original 1978 Kenner Star Wars figures! Mego is covering that other nostalgia for 8 articulated figures with soft-goods clothes.
