Hmmm...I've noticed Soran seems to get a bad wrap.  He is currently sitting in my queue of figures to open.

My only gripe is that he doesn't come with that cool looking disruptor/phaser type gun he had in Generations.

Though I get the distinct impression that Playmates just stopped caring about accessories once a sufficient pool of phasers, tricorders, engineering tools and "UV Light Sources" existed.

Ha! I know what you mean. I've been adding to my Excel Spreadsheet that I catalogue my PM figures on, and the amount of times I put "UV Light Source" or "Isolinear Chips" or "Type 2 Phaser" "TNG Monitor" or the endless collection of those Engineering tools, the same ones that every one had is utterly endless.

As I said in one of my other topics, as I buy accessory lots a lot to give to my loose figures, I end up with about 5 of the same thing, and their all pink or purple or Trill worms or Tea sets!

Anyway, Soren is good, but (as a result of Playmates out of Date info) he is inaccurate, and as a result he looks bland standing next to some of the other Playmates figures, like the Esoqq or the Hunter Of Tosk. I have plans to buy another one and add his trademark scar, at the moment he’s mugged a Jedi for a Brown jacket, although I think I might end up making him one.

As lacking as some of Playmates Accessories where, their are ones like the Polaric Generator For Kim or the Malcorian Medical equipment for Riker or the Interphasic Compensator for Sisko that where accurate to the figures in question. But don't let that put you off, he’s still good, especially with the Duras Sisters.

Back on topic, I never liked the Pastel coloured TMP uniforms, I always preferred the TWOK uniforms. Still, the TMP figures where good.

And one that everyone seems to have missed (correct me if I'm wrong), Mutated Tom Paris! I don't know if the designer was mad or deluded, but somebody who picks him over the 1000's of Trek Characters that they could have made is definitely qualified in my books.

Well I open all my figures.  I have em on display.  I dont mind repetitive accessories, as long as the damn figure can hold them!!

Plus I recently found out that certain figures can come with different coloured accessories.  I'm currently looking for Lt Carey with Orange accessories (he usually comes with purple)

I unfortunately dont have the skill or patience for customising -- though I do lament a proper Riker in DS9 uniform figure and feel it could be done effectivelt with a Q In DS9 Uniforn figure + Riker Head.

I open mine too. Their are 268 lined across the table with the two-packs and the various ships behind, with shelves with the shuttles, AA/DST, Micro machines, a Ferengi Money bank, a picture of me and Andrew Robinson, a few autographs, some of the other Playmates stuff and a Large Geordi in a DS9 jumpsuit, with the Bridge and my sewing kit accessory box in front.

Its kind of scary, you think their going to come alive of a night and eat all my food and watch TV.

I realise I’m of topic, but I have started customs, doing some of the variants, B list, never existed at the time, Comic/Book characters or remakes using my skills as an engineer/architect in training to make them. Although I've screwed up, the good figures have been worth it. I've also being painting the accessories as well. Although, as you say, its not for everyone.

I've ended up with Carey's Red accessories, you will find lots of the latter Warp Factor and late 90s ish figures had usually a pink or neon coloured set, with sometimes a silver or a reddish Brown versions as well. Some examples that immediately come to mind other than Carey are Kurn, Season 4-5 Sisko, and Intendant Kira.

Good look on the figures. What Playmates figures do you collect?

Just the standard 4.5inch ones.  I'm on a mission to collect them all this year.

Basically filling the significant holes in my childhood collection (due to the restrictions of pocket money and the fact that not all of em even came out in Australia!)

I collect figures MIB and then open them - just cause I want figures 'untouched' by anyone other than underpaid factory workers twenty years ago.

Really dig the collector cards & space caps (though I'm unsure why playmates couldnt decide on ONE size for the cards).

Strangely, despite their somewhat undesirable nature, I'm finding the Next Gen crew in Insurrection uniforms harder to find.  I am of course using ebay, and really draw the line at spending stupid amounts of money for figures.

The Star Trek collectables market has kinda gone soft, and the values are often seller driven and not market driven (as evidenced by me picking up Red Redemption Data MIB for $20.00 last year).

So usually won't spend more than say $15.00 max on a single figure.

Collectables stores are a dying breed here in Australia, and rightly so.  Though on the occasion that I find a playmates Star Trek toy, it us usually dusty, sun damaged and unloved.  A shame really.  Star Trek may never be as popular as it once was in the 90s, and it's likely that no action figure company will produce such an extensive collection ever again.
