So I am trying to put my Halloween Costume together and was wondering what playmates type 2 phaser should I get? The one from the TV series, first Contact, or Insurrection?

Not sure what criteria you are looking for. While none are accurate to the originals, the TNG cobrahead phaser is probably closest to the actual prop. The FC and Insurrrection boomerang phasers are the same, just different colors, maybe different sound effects as well.

I think you should get the Phaser that goes with your uniform.

I am leaning towards the ds9 uniform before they switched over to the first contact style. I can't seem to find those anywhere other than the custom made ones on ebay...

I do like the boomerang style phasers though...

The cobrahead was still being used in Generations as well as the first three seasons of DS9 and the first 1st season and 1st quarter of the second season of Voyager. In the episode "Homefront" from DS9, there were both cobraheads and boomerangs being used.

The TNG style uniform was used throughout DS9, so the boomerang can go with it as well as the cobrahead. Just use the later combadge with the boomerang. The cobrahead can be used while wearing either combadge since both combadges were used on both the TNG and the DS9/Voyger uniforms during both combadge eras. FC type uniform, of course, has to use the later combadge with the boomerang.

If you want the cobrahead, Rubie's costume has re-released one based on the old Playmates mold.

The red tip!

Why the red tip? Safety? Ppl might mistake it for an actual weapon, hmm yeah they could. Kinda looks like a taser...

Used to be a red tip was for safety...now it looks like they have to make the whole thing red! Anyone seen the TOS or new movie rubies phasers? They look like a cream-sickle!
TOS Phaser
ST09 Phaser
Oh Heck no never gonna buy those!
Pony up the 30 bucks and/or the 20 bucks and get the DST and/or Playmates versions.

Creamsicle is dead on!

I would assume the Rubies phaser coloration is just the color of the base plastic and can be painted to suit the consumer's tastes , like a model and so forth .

The TOS phaser isn't actually orange and white. That's just the prototype and not the actual relase. The actual release is actually day-glow blue and orange. So, you see, it's much better. wink.gif

The sound, however, on them is supposed to be excellent. So a little paint and it should make for a decent piece.

Yes, just grab a phillips head screw driver that matches the size of the screws holding the shell of the phaser together underneath and remove them all , once you have it open you'll see that the clip itself is screwed onto the bottom half of the shell from the inside , unscrew that bit and the clip should come right off .

Then put it back together , and put the screws back and you should be all set .

There is a big slot where the clip goes, but it isn't an eyesore or anything when the clip is removed. If you don't like the way it looks, you can always put the clip back. Or, if you want to put some work into it, you can putty it in and repaint everything.
