"There are two more live-action shows that haven't been announced yet," [Kurtzman] reportedly said at the CBS All Access Star Trek: Picard press tour.

Did we know this?  I don't think we knew this.

Also, where is everybody?  GET HYPED, PICARD IS NEAR!

If they are based in the prime universe and feel like real Star Trek, I will welcome new series. I am hearing things about Picard that I don't like but I am willing to see the show before I make up my mind. If they screw up the Picard show, I won't have any faith left that they will ever put out any real Star Trek again.

I'm guessing/hoping one will be the Pike series people have been begging for, maybe the Starfleet Academy one that's been rumored.

May wait until they release all of the episodes, take a free trial and binge it. If it's good I will sub next time.

Did we know this?  I don't think we knew this.

I think we sort of knew this Whirlygig. Back when Picard was first announced, Kurtzman said something along the lines of "In addition to this new series about Picard, there are five additional new Star Trek shows in the works, including the one about Section 31, some of which will be animated, and some which will be live action." Picard and DSC weren't included in that count of five shows, but unreleased live action and animated shows were. Based on that information, we can look at what's been revealed so far to determine if this is indeed new information, or updated phrasing to the information from 2019.

  1. Star Trek: "Section 31" (assuming that's the name) would be the first of the five series that we know about
  2. Star Trek: Lower Decks would be the second and fits with the "some of these will be animated" comment
  3. Star Trek: "Starfleet Academy" would be the third series that we're aware of, and again fits the "some of these will be animated" remark
  4. This leaves us with an untitled, presumably live–action fourth series
  5. This leaves us with another untitled, and again presumably live–action fifth series

And there you have it, unless Kurtzman meant two new unannounced shows in addition to the other two unannounced shows that he mentioned in 2019, these should be the same new shows that have been on the table since Picard was announced.

I'm guessing/hoping one will be the Pike series people have been begging for, maybe the Starfleet Academy one that's been rumored.

I'm thinking that one of these might be the Starfleet Academy series, but I'm not as sure about the "Captain Pike" series, at least not yet. I don't think the creative team at ViacomCBS was expecting the kind of reaction that they got over Pike in DSC, and I think that the idea of a Captain Pike series really only dawned on them once fans started begging for it. If that's the case, I don't think we'd see it for awhile; remember, they already told us the Section 31 series was in the works way back in 2018, and they supposedly knew that was going to be the first DSC spin–off if DSC was successful as far back as when DSC's first season was in pre–production, which should give you an idea of how long it'll likely take them to develop a Captain Pike series. One reason we supposedly got Picard before the Section 31 series was that they needed Michelle Yeoh on the second season of DSC itself, so they couldn't just barrel ahead with production on her spin–off at warp speed until DSC S2 was finished. Supposedly the positive feedback for Picard before it even premiered is what got it picked up for season two before any of it had ever aired, and while I don't have official confirmation of this and am thus treating it as a rumor, I have heard that Picard is supposedly only supposed to last for three seasons, and that seasons two and three would be filmed back to back, which also may explain why then–CBS Inc. was so eager to renew the show before it even premiered. (Shooting two seasons back to back and knowing you won't have to factor in another later on is really friendly to the show's budget.)

I should also note that on The Ready Room, Picard's "after show," either Kurtzman or Chabon, (I can't remember which one) said they wanted to do a Picard/VGR spin–off that would focus on Seven, Janeway, and the EMH around the same time that "Picard" takes place, but no one at CBS/ViacomCBS was interested in the idea when Picard season one was in production; that might have changed though, but based on that comment, I doubt the idea is one of the two unannounced shows that Kurtzman has referenced. (Granted, I'd be pleasantly surprised if it was.)
