So I was thinking about how diamond select could release a Borg Cube and make it a must have item for casual and hard core fans alike.

By design, the Borg cube already lends itself well as a display piece. A large, mostly grey cube will look striking in any home office or work desk. A centrepiece of any collection. That is, if done right.

So what would make us, a tiny fraction of the fan base invested in DST, split with north of $100.00 to buy a DST Borg Cube...

A DST Borg Cube would be an instant buy for me as it's another 24th century ship, but there are a few things that would make me throw more money towards it.

  • An updated "First Contact" Enterprise–E with a movie–specific sound chip
  • A U.S.S. Voyager to go with the Borg Cube
  • Possibly a "Best of Both Worlds" Edition Enterprise–D with some battle damage specific to that episode

Those three things would allow for three Borg Cube variants, and I'd be inclined to grab each of them as I've done with the Klingon BoP. Oh, and if the cube came with a Borg Sphere, or you could connect them together like they did in Voyager, that'd be the icing on the cake.

Sorry, not interested in a $100 block of plastic that says "Resistance is futile".

For that kind of money the thing would need to have multiple, shifting laser emitters that projected in an arc to simulate the Borg tractor beam.

All the times its been done, interest has pretty much been meh. In pretty much every scale. It's just too much of a niche item, even for trekkers, cause at the end of the day its a black cube with uninteresting surface detail. To be some degree of cool it would have to be very large and very intricate, and that gets expensive real fast, at which point it becomes unsellable. If it's big then the shipping becomes expensive and its hard to keep in stock on shelves... The Playmates cube and sphere have had pretty dismal sales rates -- the cube was underproduced and the sphere was overproduced. Same result though, they weren't fun in the way the ships were.

I'm essentially the target audience and I wouldn't spend $100 on a borg cube, no matter how detailed it promises to be.

I'm actually in the early stages of creating a cube from scratch, to rough scale with the Eaglemoss ships from First Contact. I'm doing the FC design of course, it'll have internal lighting and possibly a hatch for the sphere.

I agree with Morgan's post, and hope you post pictures of your build as well. :)

I would say the best Borg Cube I've seen is the Star Trek Attack Wing one, it is a great size and looks pretty good.

Yup, will post pics of the process. I'm selecting the surface materials right now and planning the interior "It's gonna be yuuge" ©.

In terms of sizing, it will probably measure 3 feet and about 4 inches on each side -- the interior wooden frame itself will be 3 feet across on each side and the rest will be surface details, about a couple inches of surface features on each side. I was tempted to make it able to fit through the interior doors in my house, but that's not a priority.

The hatch for the sphere will likely be a circular trap door that could fit over the nook for the sphere, so that the sphere could be removed. I think that'll be easy enough to do, I found a paper-mache ball that I'll use as the basis for the sphere yesterday.

I'm also in the group of having 0 interest in a cube, Borg ships have never interested me since they're just... shapes.

I would not buy a Borg cube. Wasn't interested in the Micromachine, the Playmates toy and I wouldn't want a DST cube.

Crazy idea/wish...

What about a special cross-company bundle of a DST Borg Cube (feat. awesome lights, sounds, and voice clips) with 7 limited edition Eaglemoss Starfleet ships to scale with the cube (smaller than the reg. editions). I was thinking a First Contact group of the Enterprise-E, Defiant (battle damaged), Akira, Sabre, Steamrunner, and Norway classes. The final ship would be a Borg sphere that could emerge. There would be thin, clear rods you could insert into the cube to attach the ships to, giving the appearance they are flying around it.

Eaglemoss could help front the cost of tooling the cube in exchange for offering it to their subscribers first, for a limited amount of time.

Wouldn't THAT be nice! Definitely worth $100 there!
