I hope everyone doesn't mind, but I decided to start a new topic for my customs, I've progressed (I hope!) a lot from my earlier customs, god, some of those are beyond awful, I mean, shaving Riker with a craft knife?!  Crazy.

So I've decided, for the most part, to put those behind me, draw a line, and start fresh! I'll retrofit the salvageable ones, redo the ones that are beyond hope, and of course, do some new ones! Got back into Trek and Playmates after a long absence, forgot how much I loved those figures, and how much I loved being here. So I'm back, and without further ado, my first few:

The one, the only, the legend..

Vic Fontaine! Jazz has always been my first musical love, since I was a kid, I've hero worshiped Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jnr, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitgerald.., I'm sure you get the idea! (Dean's always been my favorite singer) So you can imagine my head literally imploded when James Darren strolled onto DS9, he instantly became one of my favorite characters. Vic as a figure was a must, I made one before but, let's forget about that one! I kept the head, but redid the body. Hands need another coat of paint though (is it just me, or did anyone else feel that a Playmates 2-pack of Vic and Odo or Sisko in a Tux would've made an awesome DS9 Holosuite two pack?)

Talking of, why the hell didn't they make..?

Eddington! I mean, c'mon, he was even active during the heyday of Playmates, would've made a nice companion piece to DS9 Worf and S4 Sisko, he's begging to be given neo green starfleet accessories! But alas, mutated Tom Paris was obviously a better idea  Ready to stab you in the back and run off with your industrial replicators! Another favorite character, I'm not sure.., I'm thinking maybe lighten the hair a bit? What does everyone else think?

Moving aside from DS9, I was thinking, I've got Carey, Seska, Vorik's easy enough, but what about..?

35674006003_b79967e314.jpg
Lt Ayala! Chakotay's right hand Maquis man, Mr background extra for 123 Voyager's, tactical relief officer for Tuvok, occasionally ops, once got the helm and the captain's chair, always guarding the brig, and best of all, Mr Maquis shoulder pads! (If you remember his costume, you'll understand). Very happy with this one, any guesses as to who I used as the base for the head?

And the last two,

Space suit Chekov! Not much to say, other than his nose is squished against the glass!  Easy headswap from some spares. And finally..

35647730674_0c66f60575.jpg
Another redo, this time, Cal Hudson from the incredible DS9 two parter, the Maquis! After Eddington I decided to return to this old custom, I'm not sure though.., I redid the eyes, and eyebrows, any suggestions to make him look more Cal Hudson-ish?

Any feedback, as always, is greatly appreciated!

Yeah, too bad that Chekov's head is so large that the nose is squished against the helmet. Mine has the same problem. Nice DS9 and VOY customs, too.

Vic is spot on, amazingly. Who'd have thought Kirk's head would simply need just a little gray hair?

I think 3D printing is basically here already, on a consumer level, and to the point where figure parts in this scale can be done convincingly based on photos turned into 3D model, with some post-printing work. (This is one of those things that I try not to think about too much, because I'll get tempted to fall down that rabbit hole and start cranking out 3D-printed custom heads for these figures).

Thanks Daysleeper and Morgan!

Damn shame about Chekov, does the McCoy head suffer from the same issue?

Haha, I know, right? I was going to go for a TMP Dr McCoy head, modified, but I didn't want to use my spare up as I'd got a more obvious use for it. But I had a ton of Kirk figures, and decided to give it a go, really happy with that one, just need to hunt some grey movie uniform TNGers for my S6 DS9 crew!

And I completely forgot when putting my post together, now that would be cool 3D printing wise. It's crazy to think that we're pretty much at that point right now, could finally do all those TNG/DS9 Klingons and a Hirogen convincingly! I know some folks in the Dr Who figure community are already experimenting with static figures with articulation, and some playsets.

So what next? Bit of a cheat, and a quick update, as I'm currently making four brand new customs, plus cleaning/sorting my collection in prep for some shelving I bought to display them, so these are mainly more tweaks of older customs, plus some simple modifications. For starters, one that really bugged me because she got so close to being made by Playmates!

Commander Shelby. Made using a Vash head, Ro body, with sculpted bangs, complete with PADD. I was rewatching BOBW in HD and decided to have a re-try, much better than my first attempt (still need to do the pips though). Despite the picture, I actually managed to take the earrings off, just looks like I'm trying to hide them under her bangs.., typical after all that sanding.

(I'm half tempted to print out a LCARS shot of the D's shields or a saucer separation graphic to stick over the current sticker on the padd)

And on a BOBW roll, I had Locutus in hand while watching, and could better see the kind of style playmates were going for, with the headgear at least, just the paint apps didn't “pop” the detail quite right. So I set about fixing that plus adding his laser pointer (standard release left, customized right):

A repaint of an old custom, Frame of Mind Riker (cue creepy piano music)

36700833432_13e98598ef.jpg
And I glued gold shirted Spock's loose head, plus removed the command's braids to make him more accurate

And finally, a pit of fun with accessories! First, a newly painted phaser:

(fun fact, I've discovered two completely distinctive sculpt variants of the standard phaser and standard Tricorder's packaged with figures, I've managed to figure out that the revised bunch, this phaser included, were introduced at least by the time Voyager's first wave was produced, possibly DS9's second wave)

And a Kazon rifle, not a big fan of the Kazon, but that god awful blue, and  the prop looked pretty awesome to paint based on pictures in “The Visual Dictionary” I glued the strap on, it even works

Up next, some more DS9, with a dash of TNG and Voyager, plus a redeco of a custom playset. Any comments, critiques, or advice are always appreciated!

Great customs! I'm really impressed with the Eddington especially. Never thought a Picard-Head would work as Eddington, but... it does. The receding hairline looks fantastic!
