Different lighting. The TMP phaser has the multi-colored lighting scheme on the top panel. The TWOK should have all plain amber lights. It also has a different body color and also has the contoured trigger as opposed to the button/nub on the TWOK.
It should have a single white light source in the emitter, but it looks like it just uses the same four red LEDs as the TWOK version. Although that may just be the prototype and could change for the production version.

Where does this phaser make an appearance in TMP? I just watched it again last night and never saw anyone with a phaser.

A hero prop was made for production, but I don't believe it was ever actually used in TMP. It was, however, photographed and those pictures were sent out with press releases and such. A stunt phaser, with TWOK-style graphics applied backwards, can be seen in the scene where the Ilia-Probe materializes in the sonic shower. Ensign Perez, the security officer, is holding it.
In TWOK, Kirk's hero phaser is actually the TMP hero. McCoy and Terrell's phasers are the TWOK hero. The rest are stunt phasers.
