I actually think the Skywalker centeric narcissism of Star Wars has held it back as a franchise. I was hoping they could move forward past the Skywalker legacy in Star Wars with the new movie... like we seem to be getting finaly with Rouge One. Not that the new movie was bad... I liked it... but there was a Universe long before Anikin Skywalker... and it would get along fine without any of Skywalkers.

In a similar manner ... I have to agree with Whirlygigs rant... Kirk and Spock were never the definition of the Start Trek Universe... Even in TOS... Kirk never came across as the center of everything... The Federation existed before him... and likely would have gotten on fine w/o him. They are supposed to be our window... our guide into that world... at least thats the way I always looked at it.

Anton Yelchin will not be replaced in the Star Trek film series, a number of outlets are reporting, citing comments by JJ Abrams.

http://dailym.ai/29YYHLw

Abrams admits that he has considered giving the character an on-screen death.

"I have thought about it, we're working on it, and it's too early to talk about it," Abams told Daily Mail.

I think this is the right direction, not replacing him with another guy. A few days after Yelchin's death I realized that they may have to address it somehow in the films, or create some one-line out for him "Oh, he transferred to the USS Grissom."

The handful of recastings that have happened in Trek, not counting all the Abrams films (good lord, there may have been just a couple, Zefram being the other major one besides Saavik) were rare exceptions. Aside from Saavik, there hasn't really been a major, noticeable recasting of a major character. And we all know how that worked out with Saavik -- the character may have been entirely different. Valeris was supposed to be played by Kirstie Alley in the 6th film, something which I don't think a lot of people realize. The decision was made to just do a different character.

All of those movies are far better than any of the JJ Abrams Trek movies. I don't even think it's fair to compare them they're in a totally different league.

You've literally just compared them by saying that all of those movies are better than...

Look, you don't have to like the new Star Trek movies but at least approach them and ANY new Star Trek with an open mind.

What I'm seeing from a very small minority of fans still complaining and moaning about new Star Trek is ultimately coming across as bitter and just complaining for no apparent reason.

Gain some perspective why don't you because you're fast loosing any kind of credibility in your opinions over new Trek.

As for us who just keep an open mind to new Star Trek stories, let's remember that In 1982 Bennett and Meyer received death threats from fans because they had killed Spock. The Wrath of Khan is now considered the best Star Trek movie so please, take whatever these naysayers are saying with the pinch of salt their opinions deserve because quite frankly they know nothing. This complaining and sheer childish behaviour is nothing new to Star Trek and should not be given the time of day.

Star Trek fans who moan and complain about anything new being brought into Star Trek that changes the status quo are fast running out of any kind of credibility to their opinions. If all you do is complain about new Star Trek, your opinions become completely worthless. Either shut up or say something constructive and keep that mind open to the endless possibilities of what Star Trek could become.

Actually... my chief complaint is I don't think JJ actually *has* actually brought anything new to the franchise.

I guess though... to be fair... very few of the original movies brought anything new to star trek either... the one major evolution I can think of was in 1st contact where they needed to invent the borg queen to be able to make singular protagonist out of the collective for the movie going crowds. There are a handful of others really minor things... and typically we saw the evolution fully realized in the TV series of the time.

I said they shouldn't be compared because they are not in the same league, it's not a fair comparison not that they can't be compared at all. It's kind of like when comparing all the Star Trek series, everyone has their favorite and least favorite but often most won't include TAS in that comparison because it's just not really on the same level. JJ Abrams Trek is just that the TAS of the Star Trek movie world. It doesn't fit with the others, it's the odd one out.

As I said previously I have approached these movies with an open mind. I watched the fist one didn't like it. It was missing all the elements that make Star Trek what it is. I watched the second one again more of the same. There is nothing I would like more than to go to the theater and watch a real Star Trek movie. I've held out hope twice now that that's what these would be. I will even still eventually watch the newest one. I don't think blindly accepting anything that's called Star Trek lends me any credibility, in fact I think the opposite is true. Those who take anything Star Trek good or bad and just accept it are the ones who lack credibility. I respect others opinions. If people like it great, but just because I'm Star Trek fan doesn't mean I'm blind to the level of quality that is missing from the new movies.

The movie was AMAZING! By far the best one in the series. It was Very much Trek at its finest. Simon Pegg and Justin Lin did this movie justice.

I forgot how to do a hidden spoiler tag dang it....i REALLY want to mention something that if you don't look for it you might just miss it!

Use square brackets, and type spoiler in the first one, and then /spoiler in the second one.

So I just got back from seeing it, and it is pretty damn good. It definitely feels different than the other two, certainly more like Star Trek.

The story in this movie was very solid, probably the best one so far, and leagues better than Into Darkness.

On to the nitty gritty.

This is the most promising thing I've heard so far! I will definitely try to give it a fresh approach when I eventually see it.

Okay..... I have to apologize for being so hard on this film because of the trailers. This was really a good flick and I loved the new vibe or tone. Definitely better than Into Darkness and perhaps the best of the alternate timeline films.

I think the problem for me with the trailers is I thought the alternate timeline had jumped the shark... I think we didnt get a sense of the new tone they were going for, that I agree with Alteran, which is much more "Trek-ish".... If that makes sense.

So, the positives are that it really does seem to be bucking the trend with critics. Normally early reviews come in the numbers settle a bit lower. With a sold number of reviews in now, Meta has it at 70 and RT has certified it fresh.

Some comments of note by critics (just the positive ones)...

"The plot, credited to Simon Pegg & Doug Jung, is pure Trek. Star Trek Beyond can stand toe-to-toe with any of 2016’s big-budget blockbusters. When it comes to visual razzle-dazzle and directorial chicanery, it has nothing to be ashamed of."

Confirming that it sounds like a visually "tasty" movie.

It also sounds like fans of the Kelvin timeline are enjoying it, which is great.

Just came home from seeing it. Best of the new ones bar none. The script really gets Trek. You could see so many little nods to the past. Also they felt more as a team/family. I loved how they Delt with Nimoys passing. I'll be seeing it again. Also if you can see it in IMAX. It makes a nice difference.
