Yeah, me too. I can tell from the preview images that it's not a patch on the DST Enterprise, but I'm still interested.

Here's a Kirk figure review:

And a round-up review from a guy who just did a retro review of Playmates' old line:

Seems like every Kirk out there has poorly glued packaging.

Found this spin-video of the Enterprise:

Uh... looks like a pile of junk to me, honestly. Wonky nacelles, awful sculpt and paint choices, obtrusive buttons, and am I seeing transparent plastic on the impulse deck?!

Just dreadful. In the day and age when we have super-high-res reference material provided by the Smithsonian, there's no excuse for this ugly mess. Even if accuracy isn't high on your agenda, this is just an unattractive object.

Compared to the '90s version, the new one looks incredibly bad. Here's the '90s version for comparison:

And here's a spin-around of the Phaser.

It looks fine. I'm not about to replace my DST TOS Phaser. I'm quite sure the Phaser 1 is not a removable piece - that would have been nice.

Im gonna hold judgement until I see a more thorough review but yeah Im not that impressed.  You could easily have made this look steller without breaking the bank.  And why do they have the bulbs on the back of the nacelles and impulse engine light up when they never did that on the show yet the guidelights on the saucer are still painted on.  The 90s version wasn't great but it was a noble effort on PMs part (they actually molded  in some detail that DST just printed on).  Hopefully the production run looks better.

Oooof, that nacelle sag is rough.

And... they needed to do the A at this point anyway, which they still haven't done. Or the Disco-era refit. Or the GD Reliant, hello! Why do we even have to say this?

This is entertainment property research fail more than anything.

In all honesty, that spin around is too fast for me to really make a final judgment on whether its better or worse than the 90s one. About the wonky nacelle my 90s Enterprise suffered from this because the pylon socket loosened overtime. Im not sure from this video if they are made similarly to the old one or not. Maybe its something that can be fixed with a slight adjustment. They really should put a rigid metal frame inside the nacelle struts to correct this. I like that instead of stickers which look awful after a while, the registries and hull markings are painted on. True DST ships are hard to beat, but sadlythat ship has sailed.yep I went there. Hopefully Playmates will bring us more ships especially Klingons, Romulans, Borg and aliens.

Here's how the Discovery figures turned out:

The packaging is lazy AF but the figures look fine to me,

As I'd expected/hoped, Saru is coming up short enough to fit in with my 1:18 scale figures. I'll be grabbing him the first chance I get.

Still no figures to be seen in southern New England.

On a related note, the prices of other figure lines are.... ouch.

Hello All,

Long time since Ive posted anything here, but Im still around and check in every now and again.

So, with regards to playmates return to Trek. Ive managed to procure the majority of wave one via Amazon, though I have been lucky enough to find a few of the figures in the wild at my local Target.

I can say that the figures are much better in person than the early pictures made them out to be. Of course, one must temper expectations, as these toys will never outdo what was done previously with the Art Asylum / DST offerings. However, these figures are a very welcomed update or reimagining of the original 90s line.

The likenesses are a little soft but decent. The articulation is far superior compared to the OG line. And the accessories are basically reuses of the original molds.

As a fan of the original toyline, I am very happy with these. They scratch the nostalgia itch and can work with the old line if you squint.

I found a video on YouTube that gives a pretty good look at the Enterprise toy and grabbed some screen shots.

I think that while it has some flaws, it will ultimately be much better in person.

I will try and post some pictures. Its been a while though.

So....

I tried to create an album here on the site, but I am getting an error message when I try and upload the pictures.  If anyone has any suggestions, I am open to to hearing them.

Thanks in advance,

OAD

Hi OAD good to see you still around here too! I tried getting a few new members to sign up here and share in the conversations. Havent had much luck in finding out who moderates or even hosts this site now. I have no idea about how to go about sharing pictures in here anymore either. I post a lot in the Star Trek section on thefwoosh.com but I would prefer to do so here more. I wish Fat Head Cookie FHC would come back here and take the center seat again.

Yeah, the built-in forum galleries don't work, I'd use a stable and non-spammy photo hosting site & insert them as jpgs.

The forum settings aren't accepting new members at the moment, and haven't for the past 3 years. That's an ongoing issue.

[Waves at OAD!]

I've yet to see these in the wild though I read a report that a local specialty toy shop has gotten some stock. I'll have to check.

I'm sure the soft sculpts are intentional in order to blend in better with the original line, not unlike Hasbro's Retro Star Wars line. If that's your jam, cool, but I've gotten spoiled by small figures with impressively detailed paints apps and sculpts.

And yeah, this place has become exclusive to those of us grandfathered in (and old enough to be grandfathers). I'm all for fresh blood.

Hello all!! So far I have purchased Spock, Data, Burnam, and Saru.... I hate to say this, but out of these four, Data is the weakest figure... He seems like he is in a different scale from the other 3. His head is very large and his hands seem small due to the odd proportions. I really like Spock and the two Discovery figues.

Greeting all,

Picard showed up today, and I have to say I think he is the best overall likeness for the line. Possibly ever for Playmates Star Trek. They added some very subtle wrinkles with the paint / printing similar to what they did with Saru and it looks quite good.

Id share pics, but Im still trying to sort that problem out.

Regards,

OAD

Oh holy crap OAD its been years.  Ok the Enterprise looks much better in that video than it does on the turntable video.  Im still not gonna pick it up as Ive got enough classic Enterprises.  OK so apparently they went with the original Enterprise first to go with their retro line that makes sense.  Now Id like to see a La Sirena.

OAD, welcome back! I use www.imgur.com to upload images, then you can embed them here with [ img ] tags - to embed youtube clips as I will do in a moment, use [ media ] tags, omitting the spaces.

Ok, I'm warming up a little. The nacelles don't sag if properly attached, and the while the paint app is super-basic, the play features are quite nice. The way the windows are lit in the saucer and how the lights stay lit for a while after a sound is great.

I still think it's a bit lacking though. The nacelle field grilles are canted upwards to avoid the thicker-than-original pylons... I think that was a terrible move. The whole impulse deck lighting up is dopey - I get why the balls on the backs of the nacelles light up, but they shouldn't - I would have rather they retcon blue glows into the field grilles as the VFX team on SNW have done. The molding of the light-up windows on the command deck was done at a bad angle, leaving the windows looking like tall ovals from the front view.

I haven't watched all of these reviews yet (just the Look At My Star Trek Toys one), but I would be very interested to see this compared to DST and OG Playmates.

Here's an older video featuring those ships for some context.
