#96690 New Star Trek Series starring Patrick Stewart

Posted by VulcanFanatic on 05 April 2020 - 11:17 PM

I finished Picard today. My opinion is that this series is actually pretty good. I am glad I watched it. It was nice to catch up with Picard, Will Riker, Deanna Troi, 7 of 9, Hugh and Getting some closure on Data.Seeing our beloved characters age and hearing what they have encountered since we last saw them in Nemesis was hard sometimes but it added more dimension to their characters. I am looking forward to the next season of it.

I watched the first episode free on YouTube. It seemed so depressing. I love Star Trek that has a bright view of the future, not the dystopian feel of what they have done to Starfleet, the UFP and Earth in this newest show. Not impressed.

#96487 TWO unannounced live action shows coming?

If they are based in the prime universe and feel like real Star Trek, I will welcome new series. I am hearing things about Picard that I don't like but I am willing to see the show before I make up my mind. If they screw up the Picard show, I won't have any faith left that they will ever put out any real Star Trek again.

#96459 René Auberjonois Has Died At 79

I remember him in so many things before DS9 came along. I thought he was a great actor.Odo was a great character , perfectly played by Rene. It's a great loss.

#96307 McFarlane Toys Gets Entire Star Trek Licence!

It seems that a great majority of kids today are into video games and not so much into toys, action figures in particular. Imagination was required in my generation to make your adventures come alive with your action figures. Today's children don't need imagination as much anymore since video games do it all for you now.

CBS deciding to name the series Star Trek: Picard definitely doesn't reassure me that they have the greatest creative mindset going for them. IMO a Star Trek series shouldn't be focused on just one person, they have always worked better as an ensemble effort. I have always liked Picard but to have a series named Picard just seems stupid to me. I've always liked Spock but I've never thought of having a series called Star Trek: Spock. Alex Kurtzman just seems to always have his head up his backside and can never just come up with anything that looks or sounds like real Star Trek.

#95978 The 1701 controversy two decades later

Posted by VulcanFanatic on 19 April 2019 - 03:20 PM

Yeah, that's the thing: there were plenty of collectors who were not completists, especially those who didn't bother to get the Sisko figure for next to nothing, but who got butthurt when the 1701 figures came out and suddenly acted like they were denied admission into college or something.

Another thing we kinda take for granted now is supply. If the 1701 Picards were released today, in 2019, and bought up by scalpers just like there were back then, there would be like 300 of them for sale on the internet any given day. Then supply would have driven the price down. Back then, if you picked up a copy of Tomart's and Lee's, there were like half a dozen shops offering half a dozen Picards. So it was take it or leave it, effectively -- pay the ransom or go find another. There was no eBay.

There's one other important factor here: It may not have been that the 1701-unit run was small in relation to completist and non-completist collectors, it's that the scalpers got most of these. It was the guys sitting in their Pontiac Grand Ams at 5:59am before the Wal-Mart opened and the guys slipping $50 bills to back room clerks that got to most of these. With them removed, I think it would have been a very different outcome -- each US state would have had an average of 34 Tapestry Picards. Adjusted for population/store number, it would obviously have been skewed to more populous states. It would have still been a Willy Wonka ticket type of thing, but it would have been more palatable.

Back in the 90's when I was collecting Playmates Star Trek figures, I don't recall having known about Mail away Sisko figure, it's was only years later that I found out about it. I was a completist with the Playmates line until those impossible to get figures came along.

Playmates figures and Ships in the 1990's we're a great time for me and collecting. I have many fond memories of them. I only have a few Playmates figures now on my shelf but I used to have nearly every one produced. Good memories.

#95650 What is the rarest playmates figure?

Congrats! This figure didn't seem particularly rare in the 90's when it was released but who knows now? I opened a couple of these myself.

#95494 Star Trek 4 (14)

I would rather Trek films be dead than have crappy Abrams verse junk any day. The original crew movies that were so successful were full of older crew members. The television episodes that featured past crew members were some of the most adored episodes and I think a TNG, DS9, VOY crossover movie would be very popular.

Here's an idea, how about making a real Star Trek movie set in the prime universe with TNG,DS9 and Voyager cast? There would be more people excited about that than another crappy Abrams verse thing.

Aimed at children but will probably have crude humor on it like many animated shows do today.

#95436 Mego Corporation Revival - Could this mean new Star Trek toys?

You have to order them from Target.com. I bought some of them on the Buy 2, get 1 free deal, not bad.
