#92277 "New ‘Star Trek’ Series Coming to CBS in 2017"

I don't mind change, as long as the general idea and feel of the original are still there. And I don't have that with Disco. Let's take Star Wars as an example for a second. Episodes 1-3 didn't have the vibe of the original trilogy and are considered weak by a lot of fans. Episode 7 managed to get the vibe back (but was an obvious rehash of episode 4 with some elements of episode 5 sprinkled in). Change is fine, but a sequel/prequel to a beloved franchise shouldn't just take everything and throw it overboard for the sake of change. Disco is more a reboot than a continuation of an established universe, and the elements that made Trek this lovable and interesting franchise (at least for me) are nowhere to be found.

I talked to a friend the other day, asking him whether he's been watching Disco, knowing him to be a Trekkie. And he likes it. He wanted to know why I didn't, and I told him. And he said, "I can understand why you don't like it." and that was it. No argument, no insults, nothing of the sort. I guess he and I just have different things we look for in a Trek show, and obviously we perceive things differently. Another friend of mine really enjoys JJTrek, and he knows it is not my cup of tea. And we still get along and have the occasional Trek marathons.

But once you go online and have a different opinion, you're called close-minded, backwards thinking, not a true friend etc. I don't know if you get off on that or whatever, but I've had enough.

Daysleeper, if your watching the show, I know I'd love to hear any critiques you have of the show... I and most others have issues with it.... I know I don't think it's perfect and I think if you look at the discussions of the actual show, people here have been pretty respectful to each other's opinions.

A certain member has decided to espouse phobias and succumb to their own hate and fear... So sad... So unecessary... Many of us have solved that problem by putting that individual on ignore so we only see their bigoted rhetoric when quoted.

But I do agree this isn't a place for political discussion... Which can be difficult since often such shows have a political undertone to them. I guess if people want to talk politics maybe start a politics topic in the everything else thread?

Gothneo, I've decided not to watch it any longer. I stopped after the time loop episode, which I could barely stand. I don't like the show for many many reasons, but at the moment I don't feel like discussing them. I tried, mostly in several facebook groups, and it became very ugly. As it - unfortunately - has here, too. Not against me, so far, mostly because I haven't been very vocal here, and I can fully understand why sexist and bigoted ideas have no place here (or anywhere else for that matter).  But the tone here has become... rough, unnecessarily rough for a forum about a sci-fi-show that used to spawn the opposite. I haven't been as active here as I used to, but I always kept reading through some of the threads. At the moment, this forum frustrates me, as do those facebook groups. I'm thinking about taking a break from fandom and just enjoy the parts of the franchise I like for myself.

Guys, calm down. This shouldn't be a political discussion here. If Discovery has achieved one thing, it is dividing the fandom, maybe even more than JJTrek did. I'm not a fan of this new show, and I have been attacked in several groups only for saying that I don't like the show. I've been called backwards thinking, close-minded etc. without people ever wanting to hear the reasons for my dislike of the show. I find this very disturbing. Someone in another discussion group noted that people who don't like Discovery usually criticize the show, while people who like the show criticize those who don't. Unfortunately, I find this to be true more often than not.

This is a forum about Star Trek, more accurately about Trek toys. We shouldn't be at each other's throats or insulting each other.

Yeah, ship and crew are unknown. But the ship is ugly and the crew consists of unlikeable characters. And I agree, the conflict/war between Federation and "Klingons" is the laziest approach to tell a compelling story within the Star Trek universe.

@Whirlygig: I didn't like the Nolan trilogy. And I found Begins to be the weakest of the three...

Well it depends. When Scotty wanted to see the bridge of his Enterprise on the holodeck in TNG's "Relics", it was the bridge from TOS. When Sisko and his crew travelled back in time, they were on the TOS Enterprise wearing TOS costumes. When mirror Archer and his crew found the Defiant from the future (and from a parallel universe), it was the ship from TOS with all the sets and costumes recreated. So whatever canon violations (cannon is something else, btw.) there might have been, the general look of this time -meaning the 2260s - was always the same. Do the 60's sets look dated? Yeah. But so does TNG in the meantime, at least the early seasons. The main question is: Why can other franchises like Star Wars or Alien stay within their general aesthetic look (some things being updated, I grant you that, but in such a subtle way that it looks almost the same), but as soon as fans have concerns regarding this issue in the new Trek show, people get upset. Well, it would be possible to make a show that looks more like TOS (or pre-TOS) but still work as a show. I completely agree, visual continuity is a part of the canon. I wish Discovery would be more faithful to the roots of the franchise it is supposed to be a part of.

Nigel and Alteran: I agree with you. Enterprise tried to connect TOS and TNG-era stuff more than it violated continuity. It was a great show and would have deserved more seasons. A lot of people who disliked it when it was released have come to appreciate it as a show over the years.

And Nigel, don't let someone make you sad and angry who just cannot accept that people have different opinions on things. The problem with people who complain, that some fans dislike JJ-Trek or the direction, Discovery seems to be taking, is that they cannot and will not accept another opinion. And if you tell 1701D, for example, that you like ENT, he'll start whining about that, since he doesn't accept this other opinion. So much for JJ-haters (well, I don't hate it, I just couldn't stand the first movie or the second one for various reasons and have therefor given up on the Kelvin-timeline) not being openminded. Thing is, there are people like myself who consider themselves Trekkies and still don't feel the obligation to worship everything with the name Star Trek attached to it.
As for Discovery: I'm torn. I really like James Frain and Jason Isaacs, but what we've learned about the setting and look of the show so far makes me sceptical. I'll watch it (though I'd prefer another season of ENT as well), and if I don't like it, I'll stop watching it and perhaps I'll even come to this forum and let people know why I don't like it. Because that's what this forum is for, sharing your opinion with others, right? It would get boring, if we all had the same opinion on things... Oh, and if I do like Discovery, I'll come here and let people know that, too.

JMW, I agree. The movie was really good.

It's easy to only remember the theme tune but there was some outstanding music being done for TOS.

Agreed. I find myself humming the Romulan theme from "Balance of Terror" or even the Vulcan fight music from "Amok Time" every now and then...
