Went to see the latest addition to the MCU, and third Thor movie. Overall, this is the best Thor movie of the three easily, but as a huge Thor Fan I do have some issue with it...

The Positives:

1. We finally get to see Thor as the real God of thunder in all out battle the way the Comice depict him, and its Awesome!

2. Helmsworth delivers another great performance

3. Cate Blanchet is fantastic as Hela.

4. Actually loved Urbans Skurge

Some negatives:

1. They kinda mushed two different stories together...

Spoiler

2. They made Hela..

Spoiler

3. I would have liked to see Ulik in place of the Hulk to serve as the  muscle opposite of Thor.

4. Anthony  Hopiks is still unconvincing as Odin to me.

5. Skurge really should have been opposite of the Enchantress if they were gonna use him.

6. Goldblooms Grandmaster wasn't quite fleshed out and as diabolical as it should have been.

A solid effort, very fun, worth seeing if your a fan of either the MCU or Thor movies.

I saw it yesterday and it easily ranks at the bottom of the MCU list for me. There were some moments that should have been a LOT heavier and weren't. The same kind of humor was applied to almost every main character and not only seemed terribly forced but failed to illicit even a chuckle from moviegoers half the time. It had its moments but it came off as a parody.

If I could go back in time and tell myself to wait for home video, this would have been the first Marvel Studios film I'd have skipped. I really hope this isn't the same Thor that shows up in Avengers: Infinity War.

I don't think its the best of the bunch, but I thought it was solidly in the middle of the pack. Still I would say that the MCU is getting a bit formulaic and long in the tooth in many regards... but we need a new.. better trend to replace it.. and I don't see much contenders..

With what will probably be a huge game-changer on the way in the form of Infinity War, I can understand changing the tone leading up to what I expect to be a heavy movie. The Justice League comic did that back in the late 80's; lots of humor and levity but when Despero showed up and started killing folks off, it just made for more contrast, like shit just got real.

Marvel's generally had a pretty good balance between drama and humor and action and even romance. Ragnarok just felt utterly unbalanced to me.

It depends on who you talk to. Apparently Valkyrie's lesbian lover made a brief appearance. I guess if one soldier gives their life for another, it's sexual?

Whatever the actor has to tell themselves to get the emotion out there.. but I think I saw the same thing you did, which was fealty of sisterhood in battle.. heroism... which Valkyries supposed to be about. Seems like the actor is overlaying what they want it to be about rather than what it should be... and that was one of the weaker performances IMO.

This whole movie is a far cry from what Kenneth Branagh was tasked with making. I recall them recruiting him because his experience with Shakespeare was particularly helpful in selling the tricky Asgardian dialect to moviegoers. That all went right out the window with Ragnarok. Verily.

That battle scene on the bridge looked like it was straight out of a 1980s video game-- in a good way. Thor pummeling bad guys in that linear format had to be inspired by classic Street Fighter.

I really do like Kenneth Branagh, but I was disappointed by the first Thor movie. Mostly because I felt they failed to do the asgardians the justice the deserved... it did what it was supposed to do though which was to introduce us to the characters and set us up for prequels. I dunno, I just felt they spent too much time on adjacent backstories... the casket of winters saga with Malekith was one of the all time great comic stories... mean they basically could have just gone for broke...

Malekith struck an alliance with Loki on behalf of the fire demon Surtur.[2] He took control of a number of Earth humans using special food of the faerie provided by Hela. Malekith then killed Eric Willis, guardian of the Casket of Ancient Winters, after learning its location.[3] As Master of the Hounds, Malekith hunted down Roger Willis, Eric's son and new guardian of the Casket. Malekith battled Thor, and kidnapped Lorelei.[4] Using Lorelei as bait, Malekith forced Thor to battle Algrim the Strong, one of his Dark Elf followers, then attempted to destroy both combatants by plunging them into a pool of magma. He then captured the Casket of Ancient Winters from Roger Willis.[5] Malekith was ultimately defeated by Thor.

Of course allot more happened, I just felt they got side tracked with a Jane love interest, and trying to create stronger ties to earth... but I liked Ragnarok more because they basically focused on anything but earth. But thats just my take.

The Earth stuff was okay in this movie. There was much less of it which was fine with me. The Doctor Strange nonsense could have been reined in but that's how I felt about half the humor. And the visual effects in Odin's scene were so distractingly bad that it took the weight out of the moment.

Ha... I think Anthony Hopkins is mis cast as Odin anyway! Least fav scenes in any Thor movie.

Funny that you picked two guys who've played Superman's Kryptonian dad.

Hopkins is playing Odin past his prime. He still had his Dad Voice in the first flick but he was pretty frail. It'd have been great to give him more time as a badass warrior and King of Asgard. Maybe when Marvel Studios hits the inevitable reset button we'll see a different side of him through another performer.

Have you seen this?

Finally managed to see this today, and overall I was pretty happy with it.

I did feel like there was way too much comedy though. Every scene it seemed like someone had to make some kind of joke, or do something funny, and it just felt weird a lot of the time.

I saw Justice League a couple days ago, and actually enjoyed it more which surprised me.
