Abramsverse? This movie IS real Star Trek.

In some respects yes, in others definitely not. It depends on the point of view of each individual fan, and I don't count thid movie as a continuation of the past 40 years which, as a free thinking person, is my perogative.

Again I don't agree. It's not up to the fans to say what gets the lable of Star Trek and what not. If it were the case, I would add Forbidden Planet and a lot of the Star Trek comics by DC to the Star Trek continuity and remove both TMP and TVH from it. But that's not up to us. It's up to Paramount to decide what is Star Trek and what isn't. And we must follow their rules. We DO have the right to like, not like or even hate some of the things that are labled Star Trek and we do have the right to stop watching. But that's about all.

Just as well really. After all the Star Wars bed was a badly advised purchase....

Nobody advised me on that. It was a choice I made years before I finally found one for sale.

Yeah, I know, a travesty that ran for seven seasons and four movies.

Yeah well, I've been told that there are travesty theaters in Paris that have had travesty shows for over 30 years.

I think you've allowed yourself to be persuaded by the people who argued that the previous continuity stunted creativity.

No one had to persuade me, that has been my feeling for over a decade.

How do you know? Seen the screenplay yet?

Nope. It's just a guess.

I have nothing invested in this new universe or this Star Trek. I went to the movie (twice). I gave it a chance. While it was a fun summer film, I really don't think it's good science fiction. So... when the next installment comes out, I'm pretty sure I'll wait for the red-box $1 rental. In other words, based on this previous movie, I'm less inclined to be excited for another installment.

I know exactly how that feels. Because that's how I felt after seeing Encounter at Farpoint! I thought the whole TNG thing was a travesty.

But after seeing Star Trek (XI) I got the feeling Star Trek was finally back where it should be. And it wouldn't have worked if at the end of the movie the timeline was restored and we would have been back in the prime universe. Because what would happen then? Everything that we've already seen! Now, with this alternate timeline (or universe) they can make a hell of a lot more movies and series without having to worry about the continuity of the prime universe.

Now I agree that the plot of Nero and his red matter wasn't what you'd expect from a Star Trek movie but that was just an excuse to create this new universe. The real excitement begins in the sequel(s)!

Wait.. I'm a bit confused... I thought the 70 year jump your talking about was the time warp in the new movie...

There was no 70 year jump in the movie. I was talking about the most stupid decision ever made in Star Trek, back in 1987 when they decided that wothless piece of sh.. of a new TV series should be set 70 years farther into the future.

QUOTE (Gothneo @ Sep 29 2009, 07:45 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Also, I think your on a slightly different wavelength TUC, TNG, Nemesis... these were all in the original universe.

The point is that you should NEVER give the fans what they're waiting for. Because after you've given them that, they stop watching. Think of Lois & Clark. They were talking 7 seasons and after that a series of theatrical releases. Then they made the stupid blunder of giving the fans what they wanted all along, they married Lois & Clark. That was in the 4th season. Needless to say the show got cancelled after that season.

QUOTE (Gothneo @ Sep 29 2009, 07:45 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Just like many classic comic characters have been retcon'ed in and out of existence, I could see them doing a new Trek Series that was based in TOU (The Original Universe). Movies... I agree I think they will keep to TNU (The New Universe)... at least until they can't sell it anymore. Which will probably be after about 2 more films IMO.

I think there's more life in that new universe. Six or seven more movies, some TV spinoff series set in the same era, a couple of more spinoffs of the spinoff, etc. I think this new universe is here to stay. At least for another 20 to 40 years.

I still find the science in this "Science Fiction film" to be more fiction then science.

To me science fiction means that all the science in the movie is fictional. If it's all real, it should be called science fact.

QUOTE (Gothneo @ Sep 20 2009, 05:16 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Really? has CBS said that they won't ever ever ever make a new TV series based on the original universe? I think the book is wide open on this...

Let's face it, after TUC, no matter how badly fans wanted it, they never went back for more than a few scenes to the post-TUC/pre-TNG era. And after Nemesis they'll never go back to post-Nemesis movies or series either. And now they'll never go back to the post-ENT/pre-TOS era.

QUOTE (Gothneo @ Sep 20 2009, 05:16 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
So the question I have is... why not make another 70 jump?! If its required to advance the story would you really mind? Why is it ok once, but not twice?

Who said once was OK. They damn nearly killed the franchise with the first two seasons of TNG!

Sounds like somebody's being nurtured through his mid-life crisis! wink.gif Well, just as well since movies are cheaper than sports cars.

Yeah well... I have been thinking about buying this car but I don't have US$ 150,000.00 in my wallet!
