Hi All,

Just a new member saying hello. I've been a Trek fan my entire life, from 1965 onward. Since I grew up with TOS it's understandably my favorite, but I've appreciated every Star Trek series and movie for what they are. I've never understood why something like Star Wars, that's as shallow as a mud puddle, is so much more popular than something like Star Trek, which has always dealt with the social issues of the day in far more depth. Then again, maybe that's a rhetorical statement that answers itself? (I do enjoy Star Wars for its entertainment value)

Welcome to the forum! Yes Trek and Wars have always been two completely different beasts. Somehow, Trek has always been more fascinating in the story-telling for me even with the entertainment flair of Wars.

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks! I've been away from Star Trek as a hobby for a long time, although I've always been a regular viewer of both the series and movies. I recently become pretty burned out on several other hobbies and have rekindled my interest in Trek.

Wow.
Just a few hours ago a friend and I were having a discussion about something or other and he said, "How can you people like Star Trek and not Star Wars? They are the same thing!!!" and I couldn't think of a good, articulate response, so all that came out was, "Nuh Unh!" But then I really couldn't think of how to explain the differences to someone who is a fan of neither.

Star Trek is like your Mom and Dad. Always there if you need them. IF your not around them much you know they are out there waiting on you.

Star Wars is like your crazy Uncle Bob. Shows up once every 3+ years or so and it's a big party. After that he's gone again and you never know if or when he will ever be back.

Star Wars has more elements of Fantasy in it, and since it is set in a completely different place ( A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away) it has none of the constraints that Star Trek have such as Earth's history and religious practices that shape to some extent the world of Star Trek. The Star Wars universe is a place where you can separate yourself from everything from our own universe and be entertained by the adventure of the Skywalkers and their friends and foes. Star Trek deals with issues of our society and shows a possible future for us here on Earth, where Star Wars is a purely adventurous, fantasy/SciFi, good vs evil entertainment funfest.

Thanks guys.

It's nice to get back into a hobby that used to give me a lot of enjoyment yet went on the backburner years ago, especially since there's so much more really cool "stuff" available.

Do get me wrong, I'm a Star Wars fan too, and sci-fi in general is one of my favorite mediums. However, unlike Star Wars, Star Trek always seemed to give you something to think about just below the surface whereas Star Wars was pretty much a Saturday matinee good time. (which is what it was meant to be anyway). I'd really like to see next years proposed Star Trek movie rekindle the franchise. On the other hand, I consider the last three Star Wars movies to be near cinematic abortions and have no enthusiasm to see any more.

I think most hit it on the nail. I'll add that Star Trek is more utopian (with the execption of some of Rick Bermans work!) Exploring the endless vastness of space while at the same time exploring the inner self. The strive to better not only individvual self, but the human race. That's what Star Trek is to me. Star Wars was about princesses, Pirates and mystic Jedi's with cool lightsabers! I really don't consider most books (trek or wars) to be cannon, thus you have about 14 hours od Star Wars cannon, while I think there is well over 750 hours of Star Trek. I think that kind of says it all.

Star Trek has put 10 movies on the big screen in less time then the 6 we got from Star Wars. Even if on 1/2 are good (on both sides) that's still 5 to 3!

Well, there is a BIG Kahuna! Welcome aboard Cap'n! Amost all of my collection is TOS Trek.....but has a few STAR WARS items thrown in. VF and FHC make good points, but my take is that one is a "TREK" and the other is a "WAR". Trek to me symbolizes an ongoing search or adventure, a journey filled with good and bad elements. A war is usually a finite thing, a lot more traggic but usually more heroic; often repeated but never the same and conducted in a fog of chaos. To boldly go.....it just rings truer to me than "a galaxy far far away." Having said that, it was the concept of both stories that sent me on a 30 year mission. To boldly go (on a Navy ship) to a galaxy (countries) far far away. smile.gif
