I didn't have a ruler with me at TRU, but I couldn't help but notice the new movie tricorder seemed awfully small. I'm guessing 4.5" or 5" tall. Does anyone know if the toy is accurate in size to the movie prop? The toy does have some cool sounds and it lights-up all over the place.

It's small, but very thick. I believe it should be exact or very close to the prop. It's nowhere near the size of the TOS tricorder as the actors thought the TOS was too big, so they wanted a smaller tric for the movie that was easier to manage.

I wasnt really that impressed with any of the role playing stuff from Playmates that i saw at the stores today. I guess it made me think of the Star Trek Enterprise show props and so i wasnt that crazy about the stuff. I think the movie may soften me up to it though. Maybe.

I finally made it over to TRU today and picked up a couple of tricorders. I like it. I like it a lot. It has pretty good electronics, with eight different sound sequences and five really bright blinkies. After seeing the toy up close, I have to say I love the new tricorder design. You can see the influences from the TMP tric, the TNG era trics, and I guess the top lid and front door are supposed to be reminiscent of the TOS tricorder. It's of decent quality, especially for the price. The only real problem I had with the one I opened is that the spring in the top lid appears to pretty weak. After three or four dozen times, the lid stopped opening all the way on its own, thus not activating the startup chirp without helping it along manually. If I end up taking it apart to mod it, I will probably try and switch out the included spring with something better. There are some nicks and dings on the shiny parts, but I think that's pretty common with the metalized plastic. Everything else, though, seems to be great. It feels sturdy enough for play, the sounds are pretty loud and decently crisp. I'm enjoying playing with it and can't put it down. I can't wait to get the communicator and phaser as well, too bad TRU didn't have them.
