“I often think about the areas of the 'Star Trek' universe that haven’t been taken advantage of,” Paramount’s Evans says.

“Like, I’ll be ridiculous with you, but what would 'Star Trek: Zero Dark Thirty' look like? Where is the SEAL Team Six of the 'Star Trek' universe? That fascinates me.”

I could see there being something like Seal Team Six being a thing during the Dominion or Romulan wars, or even early Starfleet with the MACO being around. We know there was ground combat during the Dominion War, so I'd imagine the Romulan War had to have some ground combat.

I've always felt that Section 31 was the elite group of Starfleet that took care of things, so a Section 31 type show or movie would be interesting.

For me, Section 31 was a risky thing to introduce. On the one hand, it made sense for a quick 'dark' fix in terms of added story potential in DS9 (especially during the Dominion War), and I loved the episodes with Sloan. But it's also a very easy thing to exploit, and something that could be used to turn Star Trek into something it's not - and I wouldn't just use Into Darkness as an example of that, I'd use those Enterprise episodes as well. It's not that I don't believe they'd exist (of course they would), it's just that it's something that I feel should only be used very, very rarely.

Imagine how different Chain of Command would've been if Section 31 had been introduced beforehand - Picard would have never been sent on that mission, Jellico probably would've been a member of them, and there probably would've been some back room dealing with the Obsidian Order. I'm not saying that wouldn't have been good, but the story didn't need it.

Anyway, I could go on and on, so I won't: I'll just say that even though I like it, it shouldn't be abused.

Regards the whole specialist team aspect, starships carry a big compliment of security personnel and I like to believe that they're trained a lot better than present day elite squads (SEAL, SAS etc). Therefore, I don't think they should make a huge song and dance around them. That's the role of the security officer.

I would probably be happier with a Section 31 movie that was done properly versus a whole TV show that focused on it. Since it's Paramount that's talking, that's probably where it would be explored. Unless CBS is stupid, which is still up in the air.

The Enterprise crew is supposedly the best of the best, I'd say she would be considered an elite ship that handles the more difficult situations.

Gotta love self destructing the ship or vaporizing Janeway. You ended up in the brig being told how disappointed other people were with what you did.

Did the sequel allow for freeroaming the Enterprise-E?

We should make a general trek game thread, to talk about Excalibur and the possibilities of VR, etc. If there's one thing I want in VR, it's a virtual version of a starship comparison chart. Basically, I'd like to walk around the hulls of each ship, and have them all next to each other in scale, Federation or alien.

Nope, it was very disappointing. Good game though, would recommend.

Have to admit, Elite Force always rattled my nerves.  I think it was the sounds the aliens made that really freaked me out, lol.

If this were an episode of Star Trek contained within a series of episodes which cover a variety of different social and ethical issues then I think it would be OK.

If this were a game like Elite Force then fine! It's merchandise!

Because this idea could be turned into a full Star Trek movie.... It does not work! It decreases the integrity of the brand and ultimately does nothing new to attract people to opt in going to see a Star Trek movie instead of the other generic action film.

Paramount really need to take some notice of what it is Lucasfilm Marvel, DC and other influential film makers are doing witout resorting to borrowing and re hashing to make a Star Trek film.

Star Trek does not have to be more like:

Star Wars
Guardians of the Galaxy
Zero Dark Thirty

... IT HAS TO BE MORE LIKE STAR TREK!!!!!!!!!!!

Its this incessant need by paramount to place the Star Trek brand and characters over other movies/stories. Why the hell cant they just hire a writing room full of accomplished screen writers, scientists and science fiction writers to actually write a Star Trek movie that is a masterpiece in its own right? Why this insistence from Paramount to turn Star Trek from original story telling to re hashing Star Wars or Guardians of the Galaxy populated with Star Trek references and characters???

Yeah, to me such a comment means they have no idea what their franchise really represents. If I want to watch a dystopian version of Star Trek, I'll just watch BSG.

Agree completely..... To make this a smaller arc in a larger Trek Universe would be fine but to solely focus on themes such as these for an entire show demonstrates the powers that be don't know what they are doing.

Gene is probably looking down and saddened.

I honestly didn't mind the inclusion of the MACOs in Enterprise as that show came across as halfway between 'here' and 'there', a world finally getting over the old ways of doing things, and it worked really well for me.

There's just this reluctance on my part accept that anything like that would exist by Kirk's time, call it an innocent naivety if you like, it's just not how I saw that world.

The Abrams timeline probably would have something like that in it though.

Oh for sure! I even love all the "Mirror" Episodes. They too represented a flipped look at a more dark "what if" Trek Universe... but they were fun because they represented what it didn't become... they show us what it will become if we can't find a more egalitarian way.

Even when DS9 got dark with the Dominion War, most episodes tried to show a better way...

While I also love shows like BSG... it just makes you glad your not in space with them!

^Exactly! Even in DS9's darkest moments, it's still a universe that I would love to enter without giving it a second thought. There's literally no other show/series that I can say that about, especially not my second favourite (Alien!). :)
