I never cared for the playmates stuff... I was always more of hyper-articulated great sculpt and paint kinda fan...
When the playmates 2009 stuff came out I bought 1 or 2 figures... and even tried the role play and I returned it all. In the same manner I just don't dig the re-action stuff. Its all good if you like it... just not my bag.
Playmates utterly screwed up in 2009. There was the opportunity to do with Star Trek what theyve done so successfully with their TMNT line. Continue the 4 inch scale they had mastered in the 90s and then to even revisit their older product such as the fabled USS Voyager and Defiant, both of which go for silly money on eBay.
Im not really sure what whats next for Star Trek toys. At the moment its just a long list of failed attempts at launching a great new line of Star Trek toys. Are we not the kind of fan base who buys toys?
Eaglemoss seem to be doing fantastically well with their subscription service and the ships of Diamond and Playmates both do exceptionally well on the secondary market.
I think ultimately the success or failure of a substantial toy line either from a mass market toy maker like Playmates or a specialist toy maker like diamond, comes from the studio. It is for cbs and Paramount to continue to produce quality content that will appeal to their target demographic whatever that may be.
