I think the Kelvin stuff will only pick up again if the 4th move is being made. Last thing I heard is Tarantino will be involved somehow (not directing, though) but since that no news really surfaced.

Also, "A few of the items we have in development are nearing completion, hope to reveal them soon -- not the ones you are expecting, though." Does that mean Reliant is a no-no from now on? =/

I wouldnt be surprised at all. DST for the past 15 years have been making product based upon long since gone Star Trek shows and movies.

I've never picked up a DST ship before but always thought about it. Since they showed the two Enterprises in the booth do you think they will be releasing a new run? I wouldn't mind a nice Refit.

If retailers are asking for more of the two displayed, I'd imagine we'll get another run at some point.

The A isn't bad, it just has some alignment issues with the registry, and the TWOK Refit has light bleed issues. So its kind of a pick your poison with that model since DST can't seem to fix it properly for whatever reason.

My local Target actually sells both of them, and none of them have sold. Really waiting for the new HD TOS Enterprise to go on clearance.

Those are the ships the retailers want because they're easier to sell. It's a great place to start a habit collection.

How do you start a collection of the same thing over and over. "Here's my shelf with 5 Enterprises these were each released a different year, oh and those are all my Kirks and Picards". This is what's wrong with the Star Trek toy market right now, there's nothing to build momentum it's just a bunch of one off collectibles.

I get showing stuff retailers want, but there is no logic in also not showing the new stuff you're working on to continue the excitement people could have for your products.

Even if they've mentioned the Borg Select and Reliant, we've never really seen them since they haven't be able to be photographed. Obviously the Reliant can be now since that crap quality picture from the Netflix Documentary showed it, so why didn't they bring it to Toy Fair? Same thing with the TNG Phaser, its been there before, why can't it still be there?

Stupid.

Retailers are also more likely to want product from the more recent Star Trek movies as well as the iconic ships they know will sell: The Enterprise IS Star Trek - while you might get fans who love Voyager and DS9. Its the Enterprise, much like the Millennium Falcon, that most people identify with.

Id not be at all surprised if DST launched the 2009 USS Enterprise. Say what you will about the choices made in relation to canon and the story being more Star Wars in tone... the Enterprise was gorgeous. The 2009 movie is also one of those movies that hasnt diminished in popularity with the movie going public

If they make anything from the Abramsverse I hope it's the refit version from the end of Beyond. The original hasn't ever been appealing.

Due to delays with the Reliant, we are moving up the next ship, which is much closer to production. Hope to reveal soon. DST. This was told to me and also another person on their FB page.

That has me thinking it's a variant, but I'd love to be wrong.

Sorry to hear they're having trouble with the Reliant.  That being said if the new ship is being moved up Im slightly more excited.

How do you start a collection with no Kirk, Picard, Enterprise, etc? Key characters and ships have to remain available to newcomers. Not every collector was born in 1956.

What's foolish is offering a signature vessel or figure once and retiring it forever. "Sorry, kids. You'll have to go to eBay. But hey, here's a nice GOLD version of the same ship! Huh? Pretty!"  <_<

I think both points have merit... if you have a really healthy line you can keep re-issuing characters... right now Marvel Legends is better at that than ever... and sometimes the re-issues are worth picking up...

But when you have a franchise that isn't generating the demand... its tough... its why most toy lines end.. they get to the obscure offerings that the fans love, but the casual or new collector isn't so interested in.

I guess the problem here is that DST have been doing Star Trek toys (including the Art Asylum days) since 2001... thats 17/18 years!

How do you both keep it fresh for established collectors of the line and make it appeal to new fans? I just dont believe that its by re issuing ships theyve already done. If theyd improved those ships, new moulds, maybe new features?

I totally agree that Kirk, Picard and the Enterprise are the items youd want to start a Star Trek collection but what about the customers already buying the product and have been loyal collectors for those 18 years...

In the end, Star Trek I reckon could do with a master toy line as it had in the 90s. Something that appealed to the fans but would also appeal to new fans...

I never cared for the playmates stuff...  I was always more of hyper-articulated great sculpt and paint kinda fan...

When the playmates 2009 stuff came out I bought 1 or 2 figures... and even tried the role play and I returned it all. In the same manner I just don't dig the re-action stuff. Its all good if you like it... just not my bag.

You need a balance between popular products that allow for a jumping on point for rookies and new product to keep veterans coming back for more.

Playmates utterly screwed up in 2009. There was the opportunity to do with Star Trek what theyve done so successfully with their TMNT line. Continue the 4 inch scale they had mastered in the 90s and then to even revisit their older product such as the fabled USS Voyager and Defiant, both of which go for silly money on eBay.

Im not really sure what whats next for Star Trek toys. At the moment its just a long list of failed attempts at launching a great new line of Star Trek toys. Are we not the kind of fan base who buys toys?

Eaglemoss seem to be doing fantastically well with their subscription service and the ships of Diamond and Playmates both do exceptionally well on the secondary market.

I think ultimately the success or failure of a substantial toy line either from a mass market toy maker like Playmates or a specialist toy maker like diamond, comes from the studio. It is for cbs and Paramount to continue to produce quality content that will appeal to their target demographic whatever that may be.
