#72992 ASK DST 233

Posted by Destructor!!! on 20 November 2013 - 08:43 PM

Yes, please yes! An FC/Ins/DS9 s4-on/Voy s2-on phaser - aka the "boomerang" phaser - aka "the bendy-handled one".

The Insurrection version of this phaser by Playmates is one of my favourite Trek tech toys, but is still quite wide of the mark. DST have the attention to detail to do it right.

Even if it is one of the other TNG-era phasers, I'll be very happy - and if the settings buttons make that little trilling noise when you press them - I will squee. That's right, squee.

Plus, once the electronics for one TNG Phaser are down, it's just a matter of different casings - they all behaved essentially the same.

And the natural follow-on product is obviously the TNG-era Tricorders, for whom the same thing applies.

...

I just read through the AskDST, and yeah, he was definitely hinting pretty hard about a TNG phaser.

Really nice to see Trektoy.com get a mention!

And yes, his misinterpretation of the Star Wars-sized Trek figures question is bit of a head-scratcher. Awkwardly worded it was, but clear, the intent was.

I think it’s great that there are folks that collect our products with such passion that they want to take time out of their day to collect them and ask questions about what they want to see or how something is made or how decisions come about. I have done SO many of these I think it’s fantastic that we have this dialogue still after all this time.

Hear hear, Chuck!

Oh yeah, I can hear it now - that and the peculiar-yet-gorgeous sound effect they gave that volley of photon torpedoes the Thunderchild lobbed at the Borg Cube.

B'thooo, b'thoo-b'thoo-b'thooooo!

But I feel like an SFX-only ship would face an uphill-battle for approval. Wouldn't it be seen as a step back? I used to hate the idea of voice clips on a Starship - partly because Playmates' efforts in that department were so dismal - but mainly because to my mind, it was the characters who spoke, and the ships made noises, and never the twain should meet!

But now I'm quite accustomed to the feature, and really enjoy a well-chosen selection of voice clips.

I do occasionally miss the ability to choose what sound effect plays when - so conducive to choreographing battles with Playmates ships.

Well, I finally got a delivery from Eaglemoss... of issue 6 and 7.

That's right, I'm still waiting on my Dedication Plaque and issues 4 and 5. They claim that the factory has been stringing them along on a batch of 4 and 5, claiming they were sent out for weeks when in fact they were not. I should receive them "Next week"... yet again.

As to 6 and 7, I agree that the detail on the top of Voyager is a little soft, and the shuttlebay is disappointing, but the underside is gorgeous! So crisp and nice.

The K'tinga, I was really looking forward to - it's one of my favourite ships, one of the most often seen on screen, and yet one of the most under-served vessels in the consumer market.

I have to say, I'm a bit bummed out by EM's effort here - though I suspect the majority of the blame lies with the CG model they were supplied.

It seems ill-proportioned - the head seems too small, and the engines too far apart. The nacelles are also splayed to an extreme angle towards the back, and it's so precise that I think it was moulded that way. There is a splay to the K'tinga engines, but nothing so extreme.

The paint job is a bit minimalist, but serves the ship well.

It's the proportional issues - which, again, probably don't stem from EM's work - that rob the ship of its character, which bug me the most.

While we're circle-jerking about a never-gonna-happen line of ships:

Does anyone else think that there's a niche in the market for a slightly-smaller-scale line of ships, with lights but no sounds? You could get a two-pack, fan favourites sort of thing.

It'd eliminate the problem of trying to come up with voice clips for the Akira, since SFX-only sound selections would seem kind of old-fashioned nowadays.

EDIT:

I meant to say, Prometheus, those pictures are giving me indecent thoughts.

Great stuff! Beautiful build of a wonderfully crisp and detailed model.

You mentioned in the other thread about how good this looks lined up next to your Nu-BSG Vipers... any chance of a pic?

That's a pretty great idea, Gothneo!

Such a pity she's no longer around to provide fresh clips... :(

#72609 TrekCore.com article series covering the inception and development of Galoob...

You'll need to post the link. The only thing you get when you click the banner is a pop-out look at the banner photo.

Sorry about that, I should have tested it. In the old days I could wrap an image tag in a URL tag and make it an image link... not so any more. There really ought to be a condition in the pop-out-picture code where, if there is no resolution advantage to be gained, it doesn't pop it out. I suspect the image link thing would still work then.

/Slow-building rant to follow/ I'm actually not a fan of the pop-outs at all - I much prefer to right click on a squished high-res picture, and middle click on "View Image" to open it in another tab, where I can inspect it, and zoom freely, at my leisure.

But then you come up against rubbish image hosters like TinyPic who redirect you from the raw image to their cruddy page with a tiny postage stamp version of the image, which, if you click on it, becomes a slightly less tiny postage stamp with a near invisible "view raw image" link hidden, Wally(Waldo)-style somewhere on the page. Infuriating... /rant complete/

Anyway, yes next week's article promises to be the real star of the show, where we find out what toys we never knew we didn't get! Donald Rumsfeld will be thrilled.

Man, I love this show so damn much.

The latest episode was a little odd to me, though. SPOIILERSSSS!!!

(Drag-select from here...

I've never understood the Skyler hate online - I've always loved her - possibly because I have a massive crush on Anna Gunn... but the other night, she crossed a line for me. I don't hate her at all, but I feel like she's going a little "Heisenberg" herself. Suggesting killing Jesse... that's low... understandable, to a point... but loooooowwwww....

The other thing that felt a tad off to me was the whole meeting-in-the-plaza thing, with Jesse freaking out because of the big dude hanging out. It was a touch convenient for the level of writing that the show usually displays..

...to here, if you want to be spoiled/have seen the latest episode)

But hell, who am I kidding, it's still the best thing on TV, possibly ever - and these last few episodes have continually redefined the phrase "That was INTENSE AS FRAK!".

The Defiant would be perfect for the Big replica/ playset inside treatment. Playmates shoulda jumped on that while DS9 was on the air.

She sent me out the Enterprise-B decals, but her manner in the e-mails was so engaged and enthusiastic (and I'd seen a few messages round and about praising her) that I was really impressed with our communications. Glad to see she's consistent!

She's an asset to that company!
