The online reviews of the last couple episodes seem to echo your praise... Ill wait until it concludes and will be interested in hearing if they manage to pull it all together in the two part finale

I really liked episode 8! The show feels more and more like the Trek I grew up with as they progress. I cant wait to see 9 & 10!

No spoilers but that scene with Picard talking about Data with another character was so many things. Even thinking about it makes me emotional.

It falters here and there, and is definitely a different take stylistically and tonally to TNG, but it's Star Trek. It feels like Star Trek in ways that Discovery simply never has. It's that feeling of connective tissue that used to pervade DS9 and Voyager, these characters inhabit the same universe as we saw in '90s Trek.

It always pissed me off when I'd see Reddit threads like "List of canon references Discovery S01E05" or whatever - it shouldn't be necessary to point out specific references to canon in a Star Trek show - it should just be canon. This feels canon. Just hearing lines like "lay in a course to Deep Space 12" or "I need a secure subspace channel to Starfleet Command", hearing supporting characters talk about former crewmates or describe missions - THIS is the Starfleet I remember, not the frenetic absurd jock squad of Discovery.

I've been reading the spoiler threads on trek movie to get a sense of what fans think of it... and from what I can see, a lot of the concern, fear and to right complaints have faded starting with episodes 6 or 7... which suggests that while the plot line may have had a slow start, it sounds like the writers are bringing it together in a mostly coherent way... which if true, is really great.

Why does this piss you off? They do the same thing for Picard.

It has nothing to do with trying to force something into canon, it's just to point out references to other series and parts of Trek's canon. If any of the other shows were being made now, you'd likely see the same thing.

I gave it a pass - it's still silly as hell and only barely a pass - but a pass based on my head canon (and, I think, reasonable conjecture) that

Spoiler

It's still dumb though.

And the silliest bit is that its not like there aren't other telepathic aliens in Star Trek... most notably Betazoids... so they could have just passed it off with a bit of techno babble and left Vulcan physiology out of it.

You know what's dumb?

Mind melds in the first place.
Also, Betazoid mind reading.

All of that is baloney.

The idea that all brains of all species would work and process data in the exact same way bioelectrically to the point where meaning could be universally derived from sensitivity to some kind of field or signals by one species in particular is ridiculous.

Your Mac and PC can only share files because standards were agreed upon, adapters were made.  That didn't happen with brains of different alien species.  Or different earth species.  Or, likely, even individual to individual, at least within certain genetic clusters.

I could buy that Betazoids can share thoughts with each other to some degree, but when they start reading other minds, no.  Just no.

Telepathy is pseudo-science crap that doesn't really belong in hard science fiction IMO unless it specifically addresses the above and how it would be possible anyway.

SO, that said, arguing over which kind of telepathy is dumber and whether this person or that person or that synth being able to use this or that method of telepathy ... ... is meaningless.

Star Trek has never even been consistent with itself before about mind melds.  They do whatever some writer needed them to do.  Don't even get me started on the whole katra thing.

------------------------

Anyway...HI!  Tonight's the finale!  I haven't hated anything too much yet...  definitely better than Discovery S1 was.

And also, I hope you are all STAYING HOME!  What a month it's been.

Just finished Picard today. Very much looking forward to the next two seasons. Eager to see what's in store for other former crewmembers.
